Great copyright article at Mindjack 04/12/2004 08:39 PM

J.D. Lasica has a new feature in the online magazine Mindjack entitled "The Killing Fields: Copyright Law and its Challengers." It's an overview of Jed Horowitz' struggles with Disney and his film about overreaching copyright, Willful Infringement. An snippet from the article:

At various points, the iconoclastic Horowitz appears on camera, appearing dumbfounded at the tales of a preschool director who said she received letters warning that the school could not show videos to her young charges without a license or hang protected cartoon characters on the walls without permission. He also interviews members of a Rolling Stones tribute band who perform under a legal cloud and husband-and-wife party clowns in Anaheim, California, who were warned not to create balloon animals for kids that looked too much like Tigger, Barney, or the Aladdin genie.

Canadian Copyright Board allows

Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM

The Copyright Board of Canada issued a ruling on " private copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not (presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new charges.

the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current Canadian law. However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the board said.

The Underground History of American Education
You aren’t compelled to loan your car to anyone who wants it, but you are compelled to surrender your school-age child to strangers who process children for a livelihood.... If I demanded you give up your television to an anonymous, itinerant repairman who needed work you’d think I was crazy; if I came with a policeman who forced you to pay that repairman even after he broke your set, you would be outraged. Why are you so docile when you give up your child to a government agent called a schoolteacher?

Sm artStream™ Alliance Newsreader Brings RSS One Step Closer to Mainstream

"SmartStream™ Alliance (http://smartstreamalliance.com/ ) just released a desktop newsreader for the Kerry campaign that uses technology from MyST Technology Partners. This demonstrates a unique perspective concerning smart Internet applications and the use of RSS in friendlier ways. Imagine the possibilities as you experiment with this free download." [Th ink Outside The Feed]

This is an interesting step for RSS readers, but it would make more sense to make this web-based, rather than a desktop client. In another step towards the mainstream, Time Magazine has named Bloglines one of its 50 Coolest Websites. Here's the write-up for it:

"If you want to stay plugged into the world of politics, technology, show business or any other area of professional or personal interest, you have to read Web logs, a.k.a. blogs, regularly-updated personal or collaborative online journals. The best ones are in some ways more relevant and more influential than mainstream media outlets. To keep up, let Bloglines track your favorites and deliver their latest posts in one neat package. Other good blog-aggregator services include Kinja.com, a similar though somewhat shaky service (it just launched a few months ago) that shows promise as a tour guide for those entering the blogosphere for the first time, and Blogdex.net, MIT Media Lab's study in 'contagious media' that lists the fastest-spreading ideas and news items based on how many blogs are buzzing about them."

This is the second time that Time has highlighted the benefits of an RSS news aggregator without referring to the jargon acronym RSS itself.

Adsense Article

Adsense Article 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

Google's AdSense a bonanza for some Web sites: An article about AdSense that states numbers, which is rare:

Tales of AdSense riches range from a few hundred dollars a month to $50,000 or more a year, though high-dollar paydays are rare. They require a Web site with tons of traffic and the ability to put in 18-hour days working the system. [...]

In his first four months of Web publishing, AdSense brought in $45,000. Some of his blogs produce $3,000 a month. His best do "four figures," Calacanis says, though he's reluctant to fill in the exact numbers. "And that's with zero marketing," he says.

There are some detractors:

"This is a program that rewards people not for creating the best content, but for how to create sites to attract more advertising," says Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch online newsletter. "AdSense has nothing to do with search. It effectively turns the Internet into a billboard for Google's ads."

I've been happy with the program, and that's all I think I'm allowed to say about it.

My first SitePoint article

My first SitePoint article 12/10/2003 10:11 PM

Enhancing Structural Markup with JavaScript is my first published article for SitePoint, a web development portal that is also home to some of the best web design forums on the web. I've been a big fan of SitePoint for a number of years and it's great to finally have contributed something to the site. The article discusses two methods of building useful Javascript effects on top of well structured markup and is based on my easytoggle and blockquote citations experiments, both previously featured on this blog.

Associated trivia: The dopey looking photograph the accompanies my profile was taken outside a youth hostel in Amsterdam earlier this year.
