White men bad; white dogs worse
White men bad; white dogs worse
04/05/2005 09:24 AMWe spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with an
anthropologist friend who has two 3-year-old bitches (Lab and
Husky) and 4 acres of land on which Alex and Sammy
could play with them. One of the nice things about colleges
located in areas where real estate is cheap is that the professors
live close to the campus and are available to students for informal
dinners and shared extracurricular activities. Thus over the
weekend we encountered a few other Gettysburg College
professors. I asked one of them whether faculty could bring
their dogs to work. She replied "The college's Affirmative
Action lawyer, before she left, made up a lot of new rules. One
of them was that junior and senior faculty could not sleep
together. Another was to ban dogs in the buildings."
This is a good measure of how desperate PhDs are for jobs as
college professors. The college pays lower salaries, to people
of the same age, as the public high school down the street. The
high school teachers were able to go to work at age 22 without
suffering through a long period of starvation wages as graduate
assistants. The high school teachers are union members who ever
have to worry about losing their job, compared to the college
professors who live for 7 years in fear of being tossed out as a
middle-aged has-been ("denied tenure" is the polite term for this
event). And now these poor souls are expected to get through
their day without a dog at their side and without the possibility of
an interlude with a more senior professor.
[Note to parents: if you want to know why tuition prices have
risen so fast, consider that a very small liberal arts school was
paying a full-time lawyer to work on affirmative action; Walmart has a
"Chief Diversity Officer" but they had $billions in revenue over which
to spread the cost.]

Hi Xeni,
Just a note about Mr. Andrews and his "de-Xeni" plugin -
We’ve caught him looking at far worse things than your "over the

I have an idea for a plugin. Maybe I will add it to the Grease Monkey

Jake in Iraq wrote a detailed post about setting up VSAT internet
connectivity near Sulimaniya. One of the purposes this connection will
serve: getting a voting office online. Jake's a pretty serious geek.
He says he's been asked not to share exactly why he's there, or what
exactly he's doing for whom, but this is sure an interesting post.
This is how I spent my day today. It took around 6 hours round trip to
drive to Sulimaniya, Iraq. This in Kurdistan where we did the install.
I learned some stuff, it's mostly simple labor but it raised some
interesting questions in my mind about interception.
As far as I can tell, it's entirely possible to intercept any data
being sent to earth in an entirely passive way. I'm going to look into
this more before I make any outlandish claims, if you know, feel free
to let me know.

HOWTO stop procrastinating
HOWTO stop procrastinating
09/09/2004 08:59 AM
Cory Doctorow:
On Merlin Mann's 43 Folders productivity blog, he runs through a great
high-level overview of the geek-cult-smash, "
Getting Things Done," a comprehensive and nerdy guide to
systematizing yourself out of procrastination.
Stuff is bouncing around in our heads and causing untold stress and
anxiety. Evaluation meetings, bar mitzvahs, empty rolls of toilet
paper, broken lawn mowers, college applications, your big gut, tooth
decay, dirty underwear and imminent jury duty all compete for prime
attention in our poor, addled brains. Stuff has no “home”
and, consequently, no place to go, so it just keeps rattling around.
Worst off, we’re too neurotic to stop thinking about it, and we
certainly don’t have time to actually do everything in one day.
Jeez Louise, what the hell am I, Superman?
So you sprint from fire to fire, praying you haven’t forgotten
anything, sapped of anything like creativity or even the basic human
flexibility to adapt your own schedule to the needs of your friends,
your family or yourself. Your “stuff” has taken over your
brain like a virus now, dragging down every process it touches and
rendering you spent and virtually useless. Sound familiar?

HOWTO bl0g anonymously
HOWTO bl0g anonymously
04/08/2005 12:54 AMCory Doctorow:
EFF has released a guide to blogging anonymously, with "basic measures
people can take to keep
their blogs anonymous and explores what the law says about
discussing work-related issues online. Some advice is
common sense; for example, don't post a picture of yourself
if you want to stay anonymous. But for bloggers who want
strong guarantees of privacy, EFF suggests using
technologies like Tor or Anonymizer to prevent your
blog-hosting company from logging your computer's unique
Internet Protocol (IP) address. Bloggers who fear they
could be fired for blogging are also given an introduction
to laws that prevent an employer from punishing them for
speaking out online."
The bad news is that in many cases, there is no legal means of redress
if you've been fired for blogging. While your right to free speech is
protected by the First Amendment, this protection does not shield you
from the consequences of what you say. The First Amendment protects
speech from being censored by the government; it does not regulate
what private parties (such as most employers) do. In states with "at
will" employment laws like California, employers can fire you at any
time, for any reason. And no state has laws that specifically protect
bloggers from discrimination, on the job or otherwise.
One way to make sure your blog doesn't earn you a pink slip is to make
sure that you write about certain protected topics. Most states have
laws designed to prevent employers from firing people who talk openly
about their politics outside of work, for example. Be warned that laws
like this do vary widely from state to state, and many are untested
when it comes to blogging.

HOWTO: Access RSS feeds for kbAlertz.com
06/01/2004 08:51 AMMany people know about kbAlertz web site. This site publishes all the
Microsoft Knowledgebase articles as they come out. You can go there
and sign up to have all the articles e-mailed to you as soon as they
come out. Once there, you pick the areas of interest and enter your
e-mail address. That makes the site extremely important to geeks in
general, since missing an important KB article can be a disaster. This
addition of RSS feeds just makes it that much more indispensible.RSS
feeds are available for every Microsoft technology that is scanned by
kbAlertz.com. To find the technology specific RSS feed, simply browse
to the “All KB!” link on the top of the page (or the

are interested in.

HOWTO: turn off html in your mailer
HOWTO: turn off html in your mailer
02/16/2004 01:14 PMHere's a great overview of the reasons to eschew HTML for email, and
an amazing, exhaustive primer on turning off html-mail-sending in
dozens of mail clients. I keep my screen resolution high enough that
most of the html mail I receive shows up at completely unreadable
sizes -- plain text mail automativally sizes to my preferred scale,
but not so html mail.
Many E-mail and Usenet News reader programs, usually the mail and news
reader programs that come with browser packages, allow users to
include binary attachments (MIME or other encoding) or HTML (normally
found on web pages) within their E-mail messages. This makes URLs into
clickable links and it means that graphic images, formatting, and even
color coded text can also be included in E-mail messages. While this
makes your E-mail interesting and pretty to look at, it can cause
problems for other people who receive your E-mail because they may use
different E-mail programs, different computer systems, and different
application programs whose files are often not fully compatible with
each other. Any of these can cause trouble with in-line HTML (or
encoded attachments). Most of the time all they see is the actual HTML
code behind the message. And if someone replies to the HTML formatted
message, the quoting can render the message even more unreadable. In
some cases, the message is nothing but strange looking text. For this
reason, many mailing lists especially those that provide a digest
version, explicitly forbid the use of HTML formatted e-mail. See
examples section.

HOWTO: Find Mt. Everest from Space
HOWTO: Find Mt. Everest from Space
01/22/2004 02:03 PMMt. Everest, the tallest and most famous mountain of our planet,
exhales a fascination which goes up all the way to the ISS.
That's easy to believe after taking a peek at this spectacular
shot. However, that doesn't mean finding Everest in an easy task. To
quote NASA: Space is a good place to ponder the world's extremes and
nature's variability. For example, photographing the highest point on
the planet is a favorite target (and a long-standing challenge) for
astronauts orbiting the Earth. Despite Everest's planetary stature, it
is not an easy peak to locate while zipping over the mountains at 7
kilometers per second. Luckily for us, the nice folks at JPL have made
a step-by-step tutorial on finding Mt. Everest from space. Now, where
do I sign up for those tickets?

HOWTO turn your bl0g into a gopher site
HOWTO turn your bl0g into a gopher site
04/04/2005 02:24 AMCory Doctorow:
George Hotelling's April Fools' Day prank was converting his blog to a
gopher site -- gopher being a text-only, menu-driven precursor of the
Web ("gopherlog, or rlog for short"). In so doing, he created some
scripts to simplify the process. He's posted them online for anyone
who wants to convert her or his blog to a gopher site.
First, you need to get and install PyGopherd. It's fairly simple, just
download it and follow the instructions in the manual to install it,
then configure a directory for it to serve. I told it to serve
~/public_html/gopher/ but any directory will do.
Then, download feedparser, html2text and this script of my own design
to create text files from an RSS feed. Set the output directory to the
same one that your gopher server is using, set the RSS feed to your
RSS feed and you're more or less done. For extra fun, put the script
in a cron job so that it will keep updating with new items. If you do
that, you'll also need to rm the old files (which really should be
done in my script, but see the part above about this being a hack that
needed to work in a couple hours).
There's plenty of room for improvement. For instance you could write a
Python script for PyGopherd to parse the RSS feeds, which would cut
down on all sorts of problems and be useful to literally tens of
people.

06/22/2005 01:58 AMThe RIAA and many other local facsimiles in nations outside the USA

file sharing services available are fakes; they do not contain what
they portend to be, or contain only 5 to 7 seconds on a loop. Leechers
reduce the average download speed considerably. Some manage to
circumvent most of these problems but do not offer satisfactory

introduce Yet Another File Sharing Service. This time, let's do it
right. Read on for a detailed description of how solve all the
