Well, it's not quite as big a deal as Yahoo buying Oddpost, but Google has now bought photo-sharing company Picasa, which was already a Blogger partner. It's not a huge surprise to see Google expanding their offerings in more of the portal direction. The only question, of course, is how many spare Gmail gigs are going to be offered for people storing photos. Also, will people now complain that Google is scanning your personal photos in order to put up relevant advertising?

German electronics giant Siemens has reached an agreement to acquire U.S. software company Myrio, which specializes in technology for providing TV service over the Net. Myrio provides middleware and applications for emerging IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) services that use the Internet -- and not broadcast towers or satellites -- to deliver video into consumers' homes. The acquisition will help strengthen Siemens' portfolio of so-called "triple-play" voice, data, and video technologies aimed at network operators, ISPs, and cable companies. Numerous players in the telecoms sector see strong growth potential in providing services such as interactive TV and TV on demand, in addition to telephony and high-speed Internet access. The terms of the deal with the privately held company were not disclosed. Myrio, a 75-person software company, began life as an ISP, formerly called SourceNet. The company later changed its name and focus, moving into the development of software to provide video over IP.

Small Businesses Struggle

Small Businesses Struggle 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

In Les sons Learned the Hardest Way, by Going Belly-Up, Laura Randall profiles the experiences of 4 small businesses that have closed recently and offers this snippet of information:

New small businesses start every day, and fail just as frequently. About 34 percent of businesses with 500 or fewer employees close within two years of opening, and 50 percent fold after four years, according to the Small Business Administration.

Yep, my first personal business venture closed after only 6 months of start-up time... luckily, none of the founders lost too much money on the deal. I'd agree with the idea that it's tough to start your own business, and it's even tougher to make money at it, if you're not truly focused on every aspect of it.

Families struggle with Alzheimer's

Families struggle with Alzheimer's 04/26/2004 12:56 PM
Then, in one of his unexplained flashes of clarity, he told Debbie: "I don't want to have Alzheimer's." On Saturday, John will be 57. Although he is in the end stage of early-onset Alzheimer's, he still enjoys simple pleasures: walking outdoors, eating ice cream, listening to music. His wife, children and church friends — some of whom have relatives with dementia — will gather at the nursing home for a birthday party. They will honor the man John once was, and the spirit that survives. And some will no doubt wonder if they are bearing witness to their own futures. Alzheimer's is a disease that can create nurses and chambermaids out of loved ones. Jim Broomall doesn't blame his mother. It's not her fault. She can't help it. No one with Alzheimer's can and caregivers must remember that, he says. "If you don't, you'll go crazy". Or maybe even die: home care for Alzheimer's patients is a major health risk for the caregiver spouse. That's the choice for the families of the Alzheimer's patients (4.5 million of whom are Americans).
