ATA over Ethernet driver 10 (For Linux

ATA over Ethernet driver 10 (For Linux
2.6 branch)
04/11/2005 05:14 PM
This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet (AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes:
A bugfix makes the driver record the new MAC address when a new EtherDrive blade is inserted into the same shelf and slot from which a previous blade has been removed. The firmware version of each aoe device is now visible through a "fwver" file in sysfs.

ATI readies big Linux driver push

ATI readies big Linux driver push 09/24/2004 01:37 PM
ATI IS here in Cyprus to outline its recently announced X700 and Catalyst drivers.
Terry Makedon, a senior product manager, largely talked about those, but he did say the firm is readying a major push in the next few weeks to outline its plans for Linux driver support. He said that ATI has three main goals for Linux. He said that ATI supports Linux which represents around four per cent of the market, and that the firm’s Linux efforts are proportional to the market.

He said that ATI had rebuilt its Linux driver team with a lot of new developers. He said ATI will improve its test process including automated test methodologies, lots of new ways of testing more efficiently. He said ATI’s priority was to make PCIe Linux drivers ready as well as provide support for AMD64.

O'Reilly Network: Improving Linux Driver Installation. Auto-downloading drivers was my first thought when I saw HAL, but as the article points out there are many pitfalls. BTW, I'm tired of reading about auto-compiling drivers or kernels or whatever. I don't want to run untested stuff, and anything compiled on my machine is by definition untested.

Changes:
The configuration of allowable network interfaces has been fixed and improved. A module load option and a corresponding boot option now allow the interfaces list to be set when driver is initialized. Userland software has been split out into the separate aoetools package. Documentation has been updated and improved.

Remote Control Jammer 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

remote_jammer.jpg imageIt's dirty, tactically, but if you live in a household where control of the remote has escalated into a full-blown peacekeeping operation, this Remote Control Jammer from GirlsStuff UK is cheap enough (at around $8) to buy multiple units to sprinkle like land mines around the smoking battlefield of your living room or den. (Also useful: actual land mines.) It works on regular IR frequencies used by most common remotes, although they don't make any promises it will work in the US. (Thanks, Graeme!)

Internet Remote Control consists of two programs: IRServer and IRClient. The IRServer is installed on the computer that has Internet DialUp connection, and IRClient is installed on all other computers that need to monitor and control connection. IRServer monitors DialUp connection and sends info to all connected clients. Clients can dial, disconnect, communicate and run programs on server. [Freeware 1.3 MB]

Whistle Remote Control Fob

Whistle Remote Control Fob 02/05/2005 10:16 PM

tag-for-remote.jpg imageWhy this is necessary I have no idea, but it appears this device hooks up to one's remote, allowing you to whistle codes into it, which are then translated into an infrared signal that then controls your television (or whatever). Or maybe it calls down a magical bird that pecks at the buttons with its beak, I don't know. Does it really matter? You'll look like a knob using this no matter how it works.
