For years there have been these "brain relaxer" or "brain stimulator" type goggles that you could buy, which would flash lights in some sort of pattern that was supposed to do something to your brainwaves. I have no clue if they actually work or not, and I'm sure some people really like them. I've never used one, mainly because I've never had the opportunity and haven't cared enough to make the opportunity happen. Now, however, someone seems to have taken that concept and attached it to a PDA and is acting as if it's a brand new invention. The only thing that's different about this version is that the controls to run it are included in software you need to install on your PDA. Of course, the only thing I kept thinking about when reading this was that if they could also combine this solution with mobile phones, then you could have a little competition over your brainwaves, between "good" things happening to them from the little lights and potentially bad things happening from the radiation.

While Microsoft still has the monopoly on the desktop market with its Windows operating system, Novell is readying new features and functionality that it believes will propel its Novell Linux Desktop offering into the mass market. The current Novell Linux Desktop 9, which was released last November, is targeted not at the mass market but rather at those customers with more contained workloads. But all of that is set to change with the next version of the product, Novell Linux Desktop 10, scheduled for release next year.

"The next generation of product will appeal to and meet the needs of the mass consumer market," Nat Friedman, vice president of Linux desktop engineering at Novell Inc., told eWEEK in an interview at Novell's BrainShare conference here. "There is this perfect storm of things coming together, and much of this will be seen in the SLES [SuSE Linux Enterprise Server] 10 time frame." Friedman also has big plans for version 10 of the Linux desktop, which are matched by equally big claims. "We are getting ahead of [Microsoft] Windows for the first time," he said. "The release of SuSE Linux 9.2 brought a lot of innovative mobility features, while 9.3 has a variety of Mono-based applications."

Xeni Jardin: A blogger who describes himself as an "extraordinary ordinary guy in Japan" says this on the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty:

"Kitty's design was just a crib from ... Musti, created by the Belgian animator/director Ray Goossens (1924-1998) [Ed note: she's the center figure in the BoingBoing graphic at left]. Musti was started as an animation series on TV in 1968, and its picture books were also published. I read some of that books and loved it in my childhood. Although it is evident to everybody that Kitty was an imitation of Musti, Sanrio, the publisher of Hello Kitty have not touched on it. It is said that the total copyright fee for Hello Kitty reaches around 15 billion yen (13.7 million USD) per year, and Sanrio got 23.7 billion yen (21.6 million USD) gross sales in second quarter of 2004. I wonder why they don't feel shady about hiding the fact."
