California Lawmaker Wants Gaming Ban For
Kids
12/04/2003 02:25 PMA California lawmaker has decided that because there's violence in
some video games
kids should be
banned from buying them. The article at Broadband Reports does a
good job explaining why this is overreacting as usual. When there's
violence among kids, people are always looking for someone to blame,
but the blame never seems to fall on the kids themselves who almost
definitely know the difference between virtual and real - and between
right and wrong. Instead, people blame the video game and assume that
somehow kids will suddenly stop being violent.

Gmail?
California State Senator Wants To Block
Gmail?
04/12/2004 07:33 PMOkay, I have to admit that I don't really understand the uproar over
Google's Gmail offering. The press has had a field day with all the
negative attention that Gmail has been getting, and now a California
state senator is even
drafting legislation to ban Gmail. Why? Because "we think it's
an absolute invasion of privacy. It's like having a massive billboard
in the middle of your home." Hmm. No, it's not like that at all.
It would be like that if a company gave me something of value in
exchange for the ability to put a billboard in my house and I agreed
to the deal - which seems like a perfectly reasonable transaction
between two consenting parties. No one is being forced to use Gmail.
If they don't like the fact that Google will put ads in the email
client, they're free to not use it. In the meantime, there seem to be
plenty of people who want to sign up for the service. Personally,
I'll admit that I was invited into the beta and have been messing
around with it. I'm pretty concerned about my privacy, but don't see
anything wrong with what I've signed up for - and
everyone who
I've emailed to test the system out has asked me how they can get a
Gmail account of their own.

“California’s Assembly has voted to require the
state’s employers to inform their workers in writing if e-mail
and other Internet activity is monitored at the office. If it becomes
law, supporters said the bill would place the state at the forefront
of protecting employee privacy online and may serve as a model for
similar bills in other states. Critics said it would burden employers
and is unnecessary because employees already assume online activities
at work…

reversed. The text terms used for searches are also entered in
reverse. The site, which returns all the same hits as Google, can be

hasn't been blocked yet. If anyone knows another way to get to Google
from China, please let me know. (Thanks, S. Anand)...
California vs. Google

04/14/2004 11:59 AMA (being charitable) confused California Senator has proposed a bill
to outlaw Gmail because of the ads it includes in email. "We think
it's an absolute invasion of privacy. It's like having a massive
billboard in the middle of your home," she says. Even if she was
correct, which I don't think she is, why is a law necessary? If Gmail
is so clearly annoying, won't people who don't like the ads simply not
use it? What purpose would such a law serve except to take Gmail away
from those who thought the ads were an acceptable cost for the
service? Derek Powazek has responded with a letter from his Gmail
account asking for an apology. (Thanks, Chris!)...

Google Junk Mail
12/03/2003 08:38 AMMy nephew registered a domain name for his Sensei about a year ago. My
nephew's name does not appear anywhere on his Sensei's very minimal,
single-digit-trafficked site. My nephew got junk mail (of the paper
sort) from Google addressed to him at his Sensei's address. My nephew
is quite confident that there's only one place on the planet where his
name appears linked to his Sensei's address: in the domain
registration. So, is Google snail-spamming everyone in the US address
who owns a domain name? I know I got mine....
