“When Kevin Callahan started offering classical guitar lessons over an Internet video link,” writes Peter Wayner for the New York Times, “he wanted the sound to be as close as possible to being in the same room. After experimenting, he built a system that channeled three guitars, a microphone, and an orchestral synthesizer through a professional mixing board to his Macintosh. From there, he blended the sound with Apple’s GarageBand software before sending it out over the Internet.” [Jun 16, 2005]

Facetop: Ghostly Videoconferencing

Facetop: Ghostly Videoconferencing 07/02/2004 10:05 AM

facetop_2.jpg imageFacetop is an experimental videoconferencing implementation that superimposes a ghost image of the person you're talking to over an image of their desktop, allowing you to not only communicate with them via video but to share control of applications, watching them make changes as they go. Although the system is just software, essentially, because it uses extensions built into OSX it is expected to remain Mac-only until Microsoft launches Longhorn in a couple of years (although it's likely that someone would be able code something similar in Windows if they wanted).

It might be important to point out that the people in these screen shots aren't reflections -- that's the output of Facetop.

campho02.jpg imageAlthough it was announced in September of last year, this "Campho Advance" module, as in 'Camera Phone,' for the Game Boy Advance is finally ready to hit the streets of Japan. It's not much more than a hack, with an 0.11-megapixel camera and only 5 frames per second sent over the phone line, but it will allow expensive, if fun videoconferencing using a regular old GameBoy (SP or plain Advance -- the image flips depending on how you put the cartridge in). Sadly, there's not much chance this $175 will grace our shores, but really, for the price, would you want it to?

videoconferencing!

Great first-hand account of a SoCal warflying expedition:
I went warflying over Los Angeles yesterday with a group of other Wi-Fi nuts and a representative from CNN. We had two planes flying in formation with Netstumbler, Kismet, and Airmagnet running. Plus we performed a video conference during the flight. We think this is the first time anyone has done a plane-to-plane videoconference! And it worked great!

...We flew from Brackett Field in La Verne (a.k.a. Pomona Airport) towards Pacific Palisades. Then we crossed over LAX into Rancho Palos Verdes and Long Beach. Then headed back to Backett. We picked up over 4000 access points while flying at varying altitudes.

ROBIN GOOD
ON VIDEOCONFERENCING

ROBIN GOOD
ON VIDEOCONFERENCING
04/16/2004 01:10 PM
One of the kind people who have been helping me test desktop video software this week is Robin Good, a veritable alchemist of videoconferencing. I was blown away both by Robin's deep knowledge of the video tools currently in the market, and his 'homegrown' applications that integrate and build on the best features of several of the commercial conferencing apps out there. If you're looking for high quality, reliable many-to-many videoconferencing capability at an affordable price, just go directly to Robin and he'll get you set up right. This guy is really sharp (though he neither looks nor sounds like what I expected)!

Robin has two events coming up that you should check out if you're in the market. Here is more information on them, in Robin's own words:

Kolabora Live! Buyer's Review: April 22nd: InstantPresenter vs. C3 Collaborator

An ongoing series of live events in which I will personally review multiple real-time collaboration technologies and in which end users will be able to ask and to compare differences and advantages for each tool presented. In each 60-minute Buyer Review I will first introduce the competing technologies I have personally selected and I will offer a “buyer conscious”, concise and benefit-driven analysis of their features, functionalities, key strengths and weaknesses. The remaining time in the event is used for allowing potential buyers and customers attending the event to ask live questions about the tools presented. The questions can be addressed either to me or to one of the elected representative of the technologies showcased.

At the end of the Buyers Questions I poll the audience on key feature, traits, marketing and sales issues relating to these products allowing me to gather specific buyers desires, preferences and needs relative to the tools showcased. On the basis of the polled data The Kolabora Buyers’ Pick Award is then assigned to the showcased technology that has been able to stand the toughest test of all: the buyer's mind. Buyer's Pick technology is then showcased on Kolabora until the next Buyer's Review goes live. There is no cost for companies to participate. More info or Sign-up: http://tinyurl.com/3emek

Kolabora Live! Monthly Seminar

A new unique 75-minute monthly event where I report live (audio/video + slides) on:
  • New tools that have appeared on the market
  • Most interesting tools – attention movers
  • Best practices
  • Complementary tools and technologies
  • Online resources and recommendations
  • Interface design, UI
  • Functionalities, - features that can give you an edge because they have not been exploited yet
  • Tools and their usability – how to improve usability of your tools
  • Deployment and technical issues
  • Performance – what do people expect
  • Perceived ease of use – how to measure – who is doing best and why
  • Marketing strategies – offers, demos, trials, pricing approaches – what is best
Participants can submit specific questions via a text interface and in the final 40 minutes I devote my time exclusively to provide public answers to these. Access to this event is limited to 200 people and is sponsor-supported. Initially the event is accessible for free. Only a registration is needed. Recording of the event is offered as a commercial download. Sign-Up: http://tinyurl.com/358l4
. . . . .

Robin, Skype guru Stu Henshall, and several others have graciously given me the opportunity to test a variety of desktop video tools, and given me the names and specs of many other tools I have not yet had time to test. Although I will issue a full report when I've finished testing, so far I am quite impressed with SightSpeed's video quality, and I have yet to find anything that matches Skype's audio quality.

Commentary: Free software on Windows

Commentary: Free software on Windows 07/17/2004 08:16 AM
I haven't used Windows very often in the past seven or eight years. I declared my independence on July 4, 1998, and I've never looked back. Recently I was issued a company laptop. It came with Windows XP preinstalled, of course, since it is an IBM ThinkPad and only Microsoft operating systems are available preloaded on IBM (and HP, and Dell) desktops and laptops destined for North American consumers. I decided for various reasons to make the ThinkPad a dual-boot machine. Color me surprised at what I've learned about the Windows platform since. Who knew there is so much free -- as in speech -- software available for Windows these days?

New Capabilities Designed to Reduce the
Complexity of IT
05/25/2004 11:30 PM
On the second day of a sold-out Microsoft® Tech•Ed 2004 Conference, Andrew Lees, corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft Corp., introduced to more than 11,000 customers and partners the Windows Server System (TM) Common Engineering Roadmap, Microsoft's long-term plan for delivering common services across Windows Server System products, including services designed to support and implement Microsoft's Dynamic Systems Initiative. Lees detailed the first delivery of that plan, the Common Engineering Criteria for 2005, a set of capabilities that will be available in all Microsoft Windows Server System servers released after Jan. 1, 2005. Microsoft also announced additional Windows Server System innovations that, combined with the Common Engineering Roadmap, reduce the complexity of IT. Finally, Lees announced the June 1 launch of an expanded and enhanced product support life-cycle policy. The updated policy will provide customers with a minimum total of 10 years of mainstream and extended support for business and developer products.
