We introduced new keyboard shortcuts on the site today to make our pages even more comfortable to use. You can hit Alt+S on Microsoft Windows or Ctrl+S on Macintosh now to go right to the search box and type your search keyword. A similar shortcut with the letter "L" is also introduced on the manual pages to access the lookup input field. Thanks to Tommy Ipsen for the suggestion. You can read more about keyboard shortcuts on web pages in the HTML standard.

“For ergonomic reasons, you’re much better off using an external mouse (or other pointing device) and keyboard when you’re working on a notebook. Why? Check out my column on notebook ergonomics. The problem is, you can’t easily use notebook peripherals when you’re on a plane, train, or other public conveyance. But you can learn some keyboard shortcuts. Using shortcuts is a far more efficient way to work than clicking a mouse and dragging a pointer, and it’s much easier on your hands.”Read more…

OS X Tip: Remapping keyboard shortcuts

OS X Tip: Remapping keyboard shortcuts 06/07/2004 11:48 PM

On my Mac, Apple+W is the shortcut for closing a window (or tab in a tabbed application such as Safari or Firefox) while Apple+Q quits the application completely. These keys are right next to each other on the keyboard. Today, for the final time, I hit the wrong key and accidentally sent a couple of days accumulation of useful browser windows straight in to the abyss. I say for the last time because my intended IRC rant about the stupidity of setting those two keys right next to each other was cut off by Richard Soderberg, who showed me how to remap keyboard shortcuts for any application in OS X.

  1. Bring up the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane.
  2. Hit the Keyboard Shortcuts tab.
  3. Click the + icon.
  4. Select Firefox from the Application menu.
  5. In the Menu Title box, enter the exact text "Quit Firefox".
  6. In the Keyboard Shortcut box, enter a new shortcut (crysflame suggested Option-Apple-Q).
  7. Click Add.

You'll need to restart Firefox to see the change, but sure enough the old keyboard shortcut has been replaced - and the menu has even been updated to reflect the change! Magic. I'd be interested to know what happens when you try this in apps that have more than one menu item with the same name. Right now I'm going through all my other multi-window apps (SubEthaEdit, Safari etc.) and remapping their quit keys as well.

Xcode tip: customize keyboard shortcuts

Xcode tip: customize keyboard shortcuts 12/04/2003 09:35 PM
One thing that always bugged me about Project Builder is that there were no keyboard shortcuts for the most common source code management commands.

The commands I use most often are Compare with Latest and Commit Changes. It was such a pain to have to actually use my mouse. Hey! I’m a programmer! Don’t make me take my fingers off the keyboard!

Anyway... In Xcode you can now customize the list of keyboard shortcuts. So I gave Compare with Latest cmd-option-L and Commit Changes cmd-option-C.

That took away the pain of doing cvs stuff. And now, I’m happy to report, the sky is bluer and the air is fresher.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design
