Suw Charman has a great article on The Free Culture AudioBook Project that touches on all the reasons why an author would use a Creative Commons license, and what can come out of such an exercise. The issues around business models in publishing are also covered.

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

Hipgnosis Album Art

Hipgnosis Album Art 04/06/2005 11:35 PM
The art of Hipgnosis defined the look of album covers during the 'classic rock' period. The first work of lead designer Storm Thorgerson was Pink Floyd's A Saucerful Of Secrets. Other familiar works include Led Zeppelin's Hous es Of The Holy and Montrose's infamous Ju mp On It (marginally NSFW). I discovered these galleries while trying to pin down the identity of #3 in this week's entry of Stylus Magazine's Album Art Challenge. [via Owl-Stretching Time]

The descent of album art

The descent of album art 11/14/2003 04:07 PM
From its peak in the 1960s, album artwork has taken on less and less importance, first shrinking in size with the introduction of the CD in the early 1980's and reaching thumbnail size with recent legitimate online music services. Some bands have started to bundle artwork with song downloads from Apple's iTunes Music Store in hopes of rekindling the connection between a band's music and its album art. Ryan Miller, singer and guitarist of the band Guster, is unsure bundling the artwork...

The Phone Album

The Phone Album 12/17/2003 07:18 PM
In the past, we've wondered why Apple wasn't selling "space" on the iPod. In some sense, they almost are nowadays with iTunes. But, the ability to offer a "heavy metal" or "hip hop" iPod including thousands of songs seems like it would be a great seller - except that the music industry would probably freak out about it, and make it way too expensive. However, it looks like some people are beginning to get the basic idea. Submitted by Ron and as found on Gizmodo is the news that along with Jay-Z's new album is an offering for a Nokia 3300 preloaded with all the songs from the album - as both MP3s and ringtones. Of course, at an album level, this doesn't make nearly as much sense. Most consumers certainly don't buy new phones each time they buy a new album. However, it is a step in the right direction, realizing that the music acts as promotion for some other good or service that people are willing to pay for.

The Grey Album

The Grey Album 02/16/2004 05:25 PM

A few months ago, hip-hop artist Jay Z released what is reportedly his last album, titled The Black Album. He also released a vocals-only version, specifically for DJs to incorporate into new mixes. One of those mixes was done by DJ Dangermouse, using only samples from The Beatles' White Album. This new mix was dubbed The Grey Album and a limited pressing was made. After a mention in the New Yorker, copies quickly showed up online and spread like wildfire.

EMI, the rights holders to The Beatles' recordings issued a cease and desist order to record stores and online merchants selling it last week, since the sampling was done without permission from either Jay Z or The Beatles. Executive Director of the Creative Commons, Glenn Otis Brown was quoted in a Wired News piece about the album and points out the problems of copyright being used to silence DJ Dangermouse and his popular mix.
