Microsoft Office Conference Draws Strong

Microsoft Office Conference Draws Strong
Interest
02/05/2005 09:46 PM
Microsoft kicked off their first Office Developer conference today at the Microsoft Conference Centre in Redmond, US.

The conference, aimed at system developers for Office, drew more than 800 developers from over 40 countries world wide. Those attending the three-day conference include professional developers and software architects from systems integrator, independent software vendor and enterprise customer companies.

Microsoft Office vice president, Richard McAniff delivered the opening keynote presentation this morning and Bill Gates is expected to provide a special keynote this coming Friday at 10AM PST.

In the past 15 months, more than 70,000 partners have been trained to build, customise and use Microsoft Office System-based solutions. These partners specialise in helping developers and ISVs deploy Microsoft Office applications.

Microsoft claims that more than 1 million developers are building solutions tailored to Microsoft Office 2003. One third of these developers are building solutions that utilise XML and nearly 200 thousand are using Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office System 2003.

Is a Microsoft stock buyback ahead?

Is a Microsoft stock buyback ahead? 07/20/2004 09:25 AM
Wall Street analysts expect Microsoft Corp. to post sizable increases in revenue and profit when it discloses results for its fourth quarter and 2004 fiscal year later this week. But given the timing, much of the focus will be on a different figure: the company's cash. Microsoft executives have said they will announce a plan for the cash pile -- which had grown to more than $56 billion at the end of the third quarter -- during or sometime before a meeting with analysts July 29 on Microsoft's Redmond campus. Whether that announcement comes this week or next, the cash is sure to be a central topic Thursday, when the company releases its financial results.

Stock Madness 2005: Apple vs. Microsoft

Stock Madness 2005: Apple vs. Microsoft 03/19/2005 02:51 AM
The selection committee, it is apparent, has a flair for the dramatic. They knew that an Apple versus Microsoft tilt would be great television. Heck, if I weren't part of it, I'd tune in. Let's dispense with the elephant in the room: If we are at Round 3 in the Apple/Microsoft tilt, you would have to be hopelessly partisan not to recognize that Microsoft absolutely slaughtered Apple in the first, with Apple making excellent tactical maneuvers in the second so that the biggest question is no longer whether Microsoft will destroy it. The difference between the second round and the first was that Apple chose to quit punching itself. Apple is the prospector, the trailblazer, and yes, perhaps even a Rule Breaker. Microsoft is the Borg. Apple's technology tends to work extremely well and is intuitive. Microsoft's works with everything, eventually. Microsoft will never, ever, ever come up with a piece of functional engineering as breathtakingly beautiful as the iMac. Still, Apple lost the operating system war. So it went elsewhere.

A.G. Edwards upgraded Symantec to "buy" from "hold" with a target price of $30. A.G. Edwards said the performance of the software and network security company and Veritas Software, which Symantec agreed to acquire, will be better than expected in the intermediate term. The research firm said that for Symantec, antivirus growth in calendar 2005 "should exceed consensus [percentage] growth expectations of the mid to high teens." Also as the proposed merger "is not being driven by synergies (but rather diversification, in our opinion), it should pose less potential risk from disruption," the firm said. "Combined we think the two companies could generate $165 million more in revenue in fiscal 2006 than currently projected (about 5 cents per share)," A.G. Edwards said.

The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the biggest U.S. pension fund, said it voted against a Microsoft Corp. proposal that would let the company pay workers with stock instead of options. The fund also opposed the makeup of the board's audit committee. Calpers withheld votes for directors on Microsoft's three-member audit committee because the company authorized its auditor, Deloitte & Touche LLP, to perform other services, spokesman Brad Pacheco said.
