CD Sales Increasing; File Sharing
Increasing -- Whose Assumptions Are
Wrong?
01/06/2005 05:24 PM
Even while studies have shown that file sharing has been growing lately, reports are out saying that CD sales are actually up. This isn't all that surprising, for a variety of reasons. First, the RIAA had been manipul ating the numbers all along, and after a point, the reality had to hit. Second, the economy has been picking up. And, as many people pointed out, the economic downturn was probably the biggest factor in music sales declines. Of course, the industry is going to spin this as if their lawsuits "worked," when all the evidence shows that there's actually more file sharing happening now than before. However, the recording industry isn't known for actually looking at evidence.

CD Sales Increasing, RIAA Keeps Quiet

CD Sales Increasing, RIAA Keeps Quiet 07/06/2004 05:28 AM
Funny. For the past few recession-impacted years, every time an article came out talking about how CD sales were down, they included an ominous quote from a recording industry official claiming that online downloads were destroying the industry and the American way was about to be wiped out by hoards of pirates. So, where are those people when (as the economy rebounds) sales actually begin picking up? As Ernest Miller notes, they don't seem to be "blaming" file sharing for their new found success. They don't seem to be saying much of anything, actually, even though file sharing continues at about the same pace it did a few years ago. Maybe, just maybe, there were other factors involved in the decline in album sales. However, with such an easy scapegoat, don't expect the industry to buy it.

Americans increasing use of internet for
religion

Americans increasing use of internet for
religion
04/09/2004 04:01 PM

Americans are increasingly using the internet for religious purposes, according to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project .

The study's findings include:

64% of the nation’s 128 million Internet users have done things online that relate to religious or spiritual matters. ...
Those who use the Internet for religious or spiritual purposes are more likely to be women, white, middle aged, college educated, and relatively well-to-do...
The “online faithful” are devout and they use the Internet for personal spiritual matters more than for traditional religious functions or work related to their places of worship. But their faith-activity online seems to augment their already-strong commitments to their congregations.

While it is now clear that many netizens use cyberspace to affirm their faith, it is less clear to what extent Americans are using the net to explore other religions.

Harddrive Industry increasing
warranties?

Harddrive Industry increasing
warranties?
09/01/2004 03:09 PM
X-Bit Labs is reporting that major hard drive maker, Maxtor, has increased the length of time its products are under warranty. Maxtor are now offering their products under 3 year warranty, up from 1 year. Apparently, the move is being made after rival Seagate increased their warranty time from 3 to 5 years.

This action will come as a relief to many, and a surprise. It was only 2 years ago that the major industry players reduced the length of time their products were under warranty. The move was sparked after a series of high profile product faults that cost hard drive makers a lot of money.

In recent years, the hard drive market has matured with many traditional makers (IBM, Fujitsu) leaving the market. Rapid technological advancement, coupled with tough competition in the market, are cited as reasons for the exits. It's expected that other market players will follow Maxtor and Seagate in increasing the length of warranty.

Rate of U.S. Broadband Adoption

Rate of U.S. Broadband Adoption
Increasing, Says FCC
09/10/2004 01:13 PM

In a report just issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the number of U.S. broadband users has nearly tripled between June 2001 and December 2003. As of the survey, 28 million lines of high-speed access to the Internet, defined as at least 200 Kbps bandwidth in at least one direction, are in use in the United States.

Cable and Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) serve provide the majority of broadband service: cable, 75 percent; ADSL, 15 percent. In 2001, at the time of the previous FCC report, the relative percentages were: cable, 56 percent; ADSL, 17 percent.

As of December 2003, only 7 percent of U.S. ZIP (Zone Improvement Plan) Codes, had no high-speed service, down from 22 percent in 2001. Also, 46 percent of U.S. ZIP have four or more providers of high-speed service.

Dave's Opinion
I'm a fan of cable broadband service, and it seems that many online Americans share my opinion. I detest dial-up service, it makes teaching class a drudgery, and it's too slow for me to listen to my favorite radio stations. I can easily do without cable TV; however, I can't do without our cable modem. Now, the big question is, are we ready for VOIP (Voice Over IP).

How to unlock your phone

How to unlock your phone 05/24/2004 09:01 AM
On Popular Science, an article on getting your mobile phone unlocked. Here in London, there're shops that advertise phone unlocking on practically every block, but it's almost unheard-of in the USA:
While number portability may have freed your cell digits, your phone is still a ball and chain, locked into one carrier's service. These subsidy locks keep you from walking away before the provider can recover that big discount you got when you bought the phone.

But it doesn't have to be so. If you have a GSM phone, you can unlock it and switch to any GSM network carrier (the big three are AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile). You can also take an unlocked phone overseas (most of the world uses GSM) and use it on a local network to avoid paying for international roaming, or even buy a European phone (they tend to be ahead of us in cell tech) and use it here. Have an old phone lying around? Unlock it and keep it as a spare.

Suit Filed to Unlock Mobile Phones

Suit Filed to Unlock Mobile Phones 06/09/2004 12:08 PM

One of the mobile phone industry's sleaziest tricks is to put a software lock on new phones that use the GSM system. The lock prevents customers from using the phone with another carrier's service. This mostly affects people who want to use their phones in other countries, or who want to put a stored-value SIM card into their current phone for specific uses, during the initial contract period. It also affects those who want to switch carriers after they've paid for their year of service (or have paid the extra fee for leaving early). A consumer group has file d suit to force the carriers to stop this practice, which is flagrantly anti-consumer. Good luck on this one. The companies will tell you that they lock the phone so you'll pay for the subsidies they give you when you sign up for their service. This is a total red herring -- a blatant deception -- by the industry. You sign up for a year's service (sometimes more) when you get a subsidized phone. As noted, if you quit early you have to pay an extra charge. Either way, you've covered the subsidy. I have a T-Mobile phone, and T-Mobile is one of the carriers being sued. When I bought it I was told I could get the unlock code three months after starting my service. That's coming up soon, and I intend to avail myself of this feature. AT&T, the carrier I left, told me it might never give me an unlock code. Three months is still unreasonable. I hope the suit succeeds, but what we really need is legislation prohibiting this conduct from the industry.
