The copyright wars continue. For a change, I have some modestly good
news from the front lines.
One horrible piece of legislation before Congress is under attack,
albeit belatedly. And one excellent bill is gaining strength, albeit
slowly.

The fading light of Silicon Valley
The fading light of Silicon Valley
03/28/2005 03:23 AM
If Steve
Lohr is right and Silicon Valley's brightest days are behind it,
it will have been their own fault. Technology isn't stagnant, we're
going through a rebirth, the deals being being floated are incredibly
rich, for the right people this time, and not in Silicon Valley. Not
for the carpetbaggers, not for the imitation impressarios, rather for
the technology that's making the difference and the people behind it.
Last week I wrote about insiders and two
-tier communities. That's Silicon Valley. The hubris of financiers
thinking they could do it by paying nothing for technology, nothingj
for ideas. Yeah Hollywood is corrupt, and they want to tie up tech to
serve their purposes, but they are still turning out product that
some people want. Can you say the same for Silicon Valley?
Imho, it's become another gray metropolis, the ideas long gone,
replaced by corporate strokers and lap dogs.
It's still the most welcoming of climates, a temperate haven,
warm in the winter, cool in the summer. The garden you can grow in a
SV back yard is one of the most diverse and nourishing anywhere in the
nation, that's why Valley real estate is holding its value. Its got
great schools, roads, shopping, even culture. What it's missing are a
heart and a purpose.

Photo Printing Industry Pines For Fading

Photo Printing Industry Pines For Fading
Pictures
04/01/2005 06:23 AMOnly ten days after the Flickr acquisition, a
flyer showed
up in the Yahoo! cafeteria announcing that film development would
no longer be offered to employees "due to the decrease of film
developing demand". The writing is on the wall. Since 2000, the
number of traditional photographic prints ordered each year has been
on a steady decline, and
th
e photo printing industry is doing its best to keep its hopes up for a
recovery. The marketing folks at Fuji would love you to believe
that digital photography has terrifying pitfalls like accidental
deletion and crashing hard drives. Ever heard of lost negatives and
fading pictures? Some analysts also argue that the old printing
behavior will return, and the photo finishing businesses simply need
to adapt to the technology. However, take a look at the number of
total prints made each year. As the percentage of digital prints
increases, the total number of prints decreases. Why? With digital,
you can share photos without ever printing them. As our children grow
up in this environment, the nostalgia that some people attach to
physical pictures will soon fade into quaint memory. Furthermore, in
the old days, when you developed a roll of film, maybe half (if you
were lucky) were actually worth saving. You ended up paying to
develop a lot of bad pictures. Photo printers built a comfortable
business around that waste. With digital, pictures you don't want are
never developed. Hence, the decline in the number of total prints.
So, unless the photo printers can somehow get into the "digital ink
display" market, things aren't looking so rosy for them.

Fading Ways Music,
an indie record label based out of Toronto, announced their 2004
releases will be sold under Creative Commons Attribution-N
oncommercial-ShareAlike licenses. Fading Ways Music is the first
internationally-distributed label to adopt Creative Commons licensing
for its new physical CD releases. Fading Ways articulates its
philosophy for open-licenses nicely on its mission page.
Neil Leyton, the label's manager, makes a great quote here: "Music
Publishing as a concept is wrong. No one creates songs out of thin
air."
Fading Ways joins other labels, such as Opsound, Magnatune, and Loca Records that embrace Creative
Commons licenses, enabling fans to rip, mix, and burn their favorite
tunes without legal doubt.

Failure is not an option, it's mandatory.
"For more than three decades, the Republican Party has relied on
the "culture war" to rescue their chances every four years,
from Richard Nixon's campaign against the liberal news media to George
H. W. Bush's campaign against the liberal flag-burners. In this
culture war, the real divide is between "regular people" and
an endlessly scheming "liberal elite." This strategy allows
them to depict themselves as friends of the common people even as they
gut workplace safety rules and lay plans to turn Social Security over
to Wall Street. Most important, it has allowed Republicans to speak
the language of populism."
An opinion about how the surety of losing wins votes for the
Republican party.

Telepathy-enabled Quantum Minds
Telepathy-enabled Quantum Minds
08/31/2004 06:40 PMBen Goertzel of the Artificial General Intelligence Research
Institute (AGIRI) has released a new essay titled,
Kinds of
Minds . In it he expounds on different types of minds, which he
defines as "patterns associated with intelligent systems". Beyond
defining the term, he proposes a number of mind types including
singly embodied (one mind per brain like humans have) vs multiply
embodied (one mind spread across the brains of multiple robots). His
mind ontology expands from there to include ideas seemingly drawn from
Science Fiction. He suggests telepathy-enabled
minds and a "mindplex"
which is a sort of meta-mind composed of many smaller, individual
minds.
He also touches briefly on the issue
of whether or not consciousness is
quantum-based and therefore not possible for machine intelligence.
Ben concludes with the claim that he's building a telepathy-enabled
mind of his own
called the Novamente AI
Engine. Sorry, no details on how the telepathy works but you can
read a general overview of the system's architecture in this IJCAI
paper (PDF format).
