The Fight Between Sharing Culture And
Owning Culture
The Fight Between Sharing Culture And
Owning Culture
06/22/2005 02:17 AMIt seems that museums are finally starting to realize that the digital
age represents a real opportunity for them to
reach many new people by digitizing their
offerings and sharing the culture they represent across a much wider
audience than a physical museum allows. It seems that many museums
are having trouble figuring out how to digitize their collections, and
would welcome help in doing so. However, another story points out how
that can cause problems when the people involved get stuck on
intellectual property issues. Apparently some people who created 3D
digital versions of Michelangelo's David are freaking out that if
they share the digitization without some form of copy protection
people might (gasp!)
share it without permission. Wait a second... isn't
that what they should
want? That would allow them to share the
cultural wonder with many, many more people, and allow them to
experience it in ways never possible before. That's a
good
thing, not something to be worried about. However, in an age
where people seem to think that every idea, concept, software or piece
of data needs to be "owned" and locked up, apparently it's the natural
response -- and that's unfortunate for every culture.

Bullies Branching Out
Bullies Branching Out
12/29/2003 06:53 PMThe issue of children bullying other children isn't new at all. Even
the fact that kids use new technologies to bully each other isn't new.
We've written about bullying by
blogs
a>, by email
a>, by website
s and by
text
messaging. It sounds like parents and school teachers and
administrators are
finally
realizing what's happening, but have no idea how to deal with it.
This article, however, doesn't note the fact that those who have
switched the electronic bullying are often a different breed of bully
than the historical bully. When bullying was physical, it was the
bigger kids, but now, (as is pointed out in the link above to bullying
by blogs) it's often the so-called "good kids" who suddenly have an
outlet to bully back. Worse, as this article points out, since we
have an always-on world, the bullying goes on non-stop. This is
especially true as bullying moves to mobile phone text messages. As
for what to do about it, the article suggests the typical response:
don't respond to the bullying - which is always easier said than done.
The one bit of good advice for parents and school officials, though,
is not to think that a bully is anonymous just because they're using
technology. The potential list of bullies is pretty limited, and it
should be possible to figure out who's responsible using traditional
means.

Vodafone Wants To Stop Text Bullies
Vodafone Wants To Stop Text Bullies
06/24/2004 01:49 AMSMS text bullying among kids is nothing new. It's been
talked
about for years. Now, however, Vodafone New Zealand and an
organization called NetSafe say they're going to
fight
back against text bullying... by telling bully victims to run
screaming to NetSafe. Just like the typical adult response to
bullying: tell an adult about it, and they'll hand you a brochure
about why you shouldn't worry about the bullies. While it's good that
they're trying to do something, somehow I doubt this will be much
comfort to those being bullied. The one aspect of the program that
could be somewhat effective is that it will allow kids to block text
messages from certain individuals. Still, if a bully finds out that
someone he or she is bullying has taken these steps, it seems only
like to make them bully more, since they know it's having an impact.
