More fun from Radio and Music
Interactive...
04/12/2004 06:06 PM

Those of you in the UK today may have stumbled upon Radio 1's Ten Hour Takeover - in which members of the listening public got to choose which songs were played - only using the magic telecommunicative power of text messaging. What you might not know is that this was another BBC Radio and Music Interactive enterprise! Better still, some of the creative parties involved have been able to write up some of the technology and experience on their weblogs - Matt Biddulph (head of our architecture team) has written up his exhaustive and open thoughts on the design and implementation of the project in a piece called Moyles-proof code over on hackdiary. And Dan Hill's also posted his thoughts about the project in a post called Tak eover Radio. More satisfying still is that conversation around the even has even started to creep over the rest of webloggia - with David from Fuddland posting about his experience of the day (10 Hour Takeover). I was listening to the radio at exactly the same time as David and was equally impressed at the quality of the selections - although I'm not convinced that the person in the car next to us at the traffic lights near Bluebell Lane in Norwich was as delighted by Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" as I was.

thebug_dab.jpg imageReuters brings word of a plan by British digital radio firm UBC to add downloading capabilities to digital radio receivers (like the BUG, pictured) -- something that, it a sense, they can already do. While many of the current crop of digital radios can record the audio being digitally broadcasted (either through an on-board interface or old-fashioned analog out), UBC's plan is to offer a push-button option to download a copy of the song being played free of DJ yammering and other station cruft.

MSN Music hijacking radio station
playlists?

MSN Music hijacking radio station
playlists?
09/07/2004 07:53 PM
So far, feedback for Microsoft's newly launched MSN Music has been pretty positive. Until now. SFGate.com is reporting that more than 900 radio stations have complained after Microsoft nabbed effective copies of their playlists.

Although some members might remember the old adage that to be copied means one is admired, Radio station owners don't seem to be seeing it this way. When they broadcast on-air, they have adverts; Microsoft are broadcasting online without the adverts, and without the stations DJs. Rob Bennett, senior director for MSN Entertainment commented "It results in a more pleasant experience because you don't have the ads or the DJs." How kind.

Not surprisingly, radio stations across the nation see this as Microsoft piggy-backing their hard work, and an unfair way to compete in the market. MSN Radio is part of MSN Music, and was largely over looked when MSN Music launched. One of it's features is the 'localised radio', offering content from 1,200 radio stations.

The current situation is arguably quite confusing. Microsoft label sites with "like XY.Z FM" and then list what Microsoft describe as a factual piece of information - the name - rather than a trademark. One can't but wonder, if the tables were turned, would there be trademark cease and desist letters being sealed?

Olympics Shut Down Online Radio Stream
Of Radio Stations
08/16/2004 02:27 PM
It appears the folks running the Olympics are so focused on controlling (i.e., "selling") the rights to broadcast accounts of the Olympic games that they're forcing some radio stations to shut down their internet streams. The radio stations in question have regular radio broadcast rights for the Olympics, but since they didn't pay up to internet broadcast rights, they need to turn off their internet streams for the duration of the games. Considering the fact that it appears that no one is actually attending these games in person, apparently, the Olympics has decided that they're going to squeeze broadcasters for every last penny. Ah, the spirit of the games.

RadioYourWay Great for Radio Junkies

AP - Today's technology consumer devours lots of different media, and that has taken the luster away from some old-fashioned information stalwarts — namely AM/FM radio.

RadioYourWay: MP3 Player, AM/FM Recorder

RadioYourWay: MP3 Player, AM/FM Recorder 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

radioyourway.jpgFor you talk radio fans, Pogo! Products (they're that excited) offers their new RadioYourWay LX. Featuring a built in MP3/WMA player and a voice recorder, the LX also allows you to listen to and record both FM AND AM radio. I'd be remiss to out and say that this is the first AM-capable MP3 recorder out there, but it's the first I've seen, so there's that. It also looks strikingly like an ugly iPod, but its ability to schedule recording times using a daily or weekly timer function is pretty cool, so it's forgiven. It also lets you record from any external source straight to MP3 and comes with 128MB of memory for $200 (or 512MB for $250), with the option to expand past 1GB using its SD slot.

It's started shipping today, so if you can't get enough AM talk show radio, pick yours up now.

Emerging Tech's self-organizing
conference-within-a-conference
12/20/2003 09:44 PM
At this year's O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference, there are 27 night sessions reserved from allocation by the organizers, left open to be a "self organizing conference-within-a-conference." The idea is that ETCON attendees propose sessions on the open wiki, and vote on which they'd prefer to attend.
We're not looking for polished presentations. We'd prefer "white board" sessions on your works-in-progess, rough demonstrations with promise, concept and code (with an emphasis on running code, even if it doesn't yet fully represent the concept). You should be prepared to take input, answer questions, engage in discussion, and be open to altering your conceptions and mucking about in your source. Oh, and have a good deal of fun while you're at it.
