Storing Your Banned Phone May Cost You

Storing Your Banned Phone May Cost You 12/22/2004 01:16 AM
With the backlash against cameraphones growing rapidly, many different places have banned mobile phones -- including some courthouses. No, we don't know what it is with court houses and wireless technologies today, but they're getting a lot of attention. Textuall y is pointing out that a new industry of sorts has been built up outside of buildings that ban cameraphones. For $10, a hot dog vendor outside a federal courthouse in Miami will store your contraband cameraphone behind the hot dog buns in his cart. Down the street, a shopowner charges $2, but gets annoyed that they keep ringing. Many who show up at the court without realizing the ban was in place, and who don't know about the local merchants' "side business," simply end up burying them in the dirt or hiding them under garbage cans. If you're looking to pick up some free mobile phones, apparently digging around outside of federal courthouses may be the way to go.

redcase.jpgI was the coolest kid in PreCalc, having splurged and bought the six colored TI-83+ calculator cases offered on their web site. (True story.) Now you can rice out your TI from the inside, overclocking your calculator with a quick trip to Radio Shack, a soldering iron and a basic comprehension of the term "will void your warranty." Overclocking TIs is nothing new of course, but we believe each new generation deserves to run TI-Snake and Drug Wars at its very quickest. Richfiles has full step-by-step instructions and pictures for every model from the TI-81 to the TI-92.

HP-01 calculator watch

HP-01 calculator watch 03/27/2005 03:25 AM
"Time: elusive and immediate...limited yet infinite. Because time is important to you, Hewlett-Packard introduces the HP-01, a new dimension in time management and personal computation." Truly, such an important model number could only be bestowed upon the king of all early calculator watches. No less than three batteries were required (two for the LED display alone), and even HP's impressive engineering was unable to save the HP-01 from the curse of bulkiness; it did not sell well at the $650 price point. The HP-01 was discontinued in 1980, as inexpensive LCD calculator watches began flooding the market (don't lie, you know you had one).

Web mindshare calculator revisited

Web mindshare calculator revisited 12/04/2003 09:37 AM
spidering hacks My old web mindshare calculator has been updated for the Spidering Hacks book. The original version from 1999 used AltaVista to measure what I called the web mindshare -- that is, the number of indexed inbound links -- for a collection of sites in a Yahoo! category. The new version is updated to use Google. Cool! That project was one of the first things that really got me thinking about what Web services would inevitably become. Here's how I described it in my book:
In effect, every web site is a scriptable component, and the Web as a whole is a vast library of such components. You can invoke these invidually from any scripting language that can issue HTTP requests and interpret the responses.

What's more, you can join components to achieve novel effects. For example, I've used Yahoo! and AltaVista in combination to measure the "mindshare" of web sites in specific categories. To do that, I wrote a Perl script that uses Yahoo!'s namespace API to unroll the subdirectories under a node of the Yahoo! directory tree, yielding a consolidated list of URLs belonging to some category, such as /Science/Nanotechnology/. Then the script feeds that list of URLs, one at a time, to AltaVista, using its CGI API to ask, for each site, how many other pages in the AltaVista index refer to that site. The ranked list of these citation counts measures what I call the web mindshare of the sites.

Yahoo! wasn't designed to produce an unrolled list of sites in a category, but its web API can be made to do it. Likewise, AltaVista wasn't designed to count references to each of the sites in such a list, but its web API can be made to do it. These two macrocomponents, driven remotely by a 100-line Perl script (see http:/ /www.byte.com/features/1999/03/udellmindshare.html), can be joined to create a new application that measures web mindshare. Asteroid Impact Calculator

Asteroid Impact Calculator 04/13/2004 12:52 PM

Here's a cheerful thought: We're all tooling along, minding our own business, when suddenly an asteroid slams into the earth, wreaking death and destruction in some far-off (or maybe not-so-far-off) place. What effect would the impact, wherever it happened, have here in sunny Sioux Falls, South Dakota?

Leave it to the Department of Planetary Science eggheads at the University of Arizona to put together an online form that will tell you exactly how bad it will be. Just enter a few variables regarding how big the asteroid is, how fast it's travelling, what it's made of, and how far you are from it, and it will spit back at you... "the seismic, blast wave, and thermal effects of an impact as well as the size of the crater produced by the impact."

Does Bruce Willis know about this?
