Kudos For Hasbro

Kudos For Hasbro

Kudos For Hasbro 03/13/2003 10:26 AM

For those not yet overwhelmed by all that the big H has to offer us this next year, take a peek at the above image and see if you can spot the similarities. Someone in Hasbro’s design team deserves a raise for squeaking out a tribute to the film that ultimately made Star Wars possible –Lucas’ 1973 film American Graffiti.

Just wanted to publicly thank Henrick Hellström of StreamSec for the excellent support he's provided me over the past few days. I had an urgent need for digital signature verification but had no prior experience with the topic, and Henrick was extremely helpful in getting me up to speed and getting my code in working order.

Given my experience with them, I can strongly recommend StreamSec to any Delphi developer who needs an encryption toolkit.

Kudos to Wired and more

Kudos to Wired and more 11/25/2003 10:32 PM
Wired's on a roll. In the October issue, they ran a page by Rebecca Harper that puts the effect of music sharing into perspective: The labels have released 14% fewer new CDs since 1999 and they've raised the prices 16% since 1997 (after adjusting for inflation). Yes, she says, file sharing has cost the industry money. "But what the RIAA doesn't want to admit is that the CD is reaching the end of its life cycle..." Then in the December issue (the one with Uma on the cover), they devote a part of a page to step-by-step instructions on how...

Kudos to Xcode group

Kudos to Xcode group 06/17/2005 04:30 PM
Another group at Apple that impressed me at WWDC this year was the folks behind Xcode.

Xcode 2.0 shipped with Tiger, at the end of April. Xcode 2.1 shipped less than two months later.

It includes support for universal binaries, of course—but that’s not all, there are a bunch of nice user features in there, including a bunch of debugging improvements and a welcome change to how build settings are configured.

(I suspect the release of 2.1 is a combination of good planning, good project management, and possibly a few late nights.)

Having this new version of Xcode makes the Intel transition credible—without it, it would be all hand-waving and telling developers how it will be easy once the tools are ready. Better to show us, as they’ve done, that it’s already easy.

Kudos for Onfolio 2.0 Feed Reader

Kudos for Onfolio 2.0 Feed Reader 12/17/2004 06:21 PM

Congrats to the Onfolio team who have just released their public beta of Onfolio 2.0.  I have been using the new Feed Reader in Onfolio, and am loving it.  Here are a few nice features on the Feeds and Blogging front:

  • Firefox and IE support -- runs in the browser, or as a dockable deskbar
  • Newspaper views (nice DHTML app) make it extremely productive to plow through dozens or hundreds of feeds
  • Reading-list feature lets you productively browse through lots of items and mark those you want to go deep on for readying later
  • Nested collections of feeds
  • Search Feeds, with integration into Feedster and Daypop
  • Item capture -- you can pretty much capture any micro-content from the Web, your RSS feeds, your email, etc.
  • Blog This -- easily blog any item with support for all major weblog services
  • Auto-Blogging -- you can 'share' folders of captured content which are replicated as an HTML weblog, auto-posted into any blog, with generated RSS feeds, etc.

All of this is focused on Feed reading and Blogging, but Onfolio 2.0 builds on 1.0 which provides a great general-purpose content collection engine for your desktop and the Internet, including great built-in sharing and publishing tools.

Check it out!  Here is a detailed list of new features, screenshots and more.

marketing approach
04/06/2005 11:54 AM
If you work with a company that sells software, odds are that your approach to marketing and public relations is the same as it’s been for years: press releases, calls to magazine editors and reviewers, and perhaps a customer newsletter that announces updates and improvements. But we’re in the 21st century now, and savvy companies with sharp marketing teams are realizing that the industry has changed and that visibility is more about identifying and engaging…

Micronations have existed for some time. Some were a frauds and shams. Some were seized or destroyed. Some for profit and others for promotion. Australia had a rash of them. Some dedicated to old ideas and others to new ones.

Rip, Mix, and Burn anything on earth 07/16/2004 11:57 PM

Today while I was at a web conference, a speaker used an incredible MIT Media Lab project as a demo during a talk. Check out the I/O brush project. The project appears to be a camera that can take a photo still or video of anything you point it at, then the captured images can be "painted" on a virtual canvas. It's essentially one giant derivative work creator.

Watch this Real Video demo of the I/O Brush in action

After you see it, you can see how incredible this technology is. I can't imagine when something like this would be a cheap, easily available tool, but I can imagine that parts of the technology may eventually show up in something. It takes the concept of rip, mix, and burn to whole new levels, creating new art works from anything else (including copyrighted art, text, and trademarked logos) and I wonder what the legal landscape will be like when this technology is readily available. Can you imagine the scorn this product will get from publishing companies, movie studios, and the like?

Plasma Burn-in Oops 01/06/2005 05:16 PM

WHO image rattles plasma TV owner: Not what you want out of an expensive TV.

[Bryant] Ayala of Bondurant [Iowa] said he noticed Monday night that the blue frame used by WHO-TV to warn viewers about winter weather closings appeared to have been burned into his recently purchased plasma screen.

A Web site called PlasmaTVBuyingGuide.com said that images can be burned into plasma TV screens, particularly when the image is displayed for more than a few minutes at a time. The problem is more common during the first 200 hours of use, according to the site.

Remember that this is why screensavers moved around originally — because of the mythical "burn in." Supposedly this problem was resolved for CRTs a long time ago, but I guess plasmas are still in their infancy.

Macworld review: Dragon Burn 3.1

Macworld review: Dragon Burn 3.1 04/22/2004 02:28 AM
Dragon Burn 3.1.17, an inexpensive disc-burning application from NewTech Infosystems, promises some intriguing features that Mac OS and Roxio's Toast 6 Titanium do not offer. Among these features are simultaneous burning on multiple recorders, multisession DVD-R burning, and conversion of an iTunes playlist's AAC files to AIFF files for an audio CD. Regrettably, too many of its features work poorly (or not at all).

Burn until recorded now! 0.4.3 (Default
branch)
03/17/2005 03:34 AM
Screenshot Burn (burn until recorded now!) is a simple command-line program whose aim is to make it easy and quick to burn CDs/DVDs. Burn is able to create an Audio CD from .ogg, .mp3, and .wav files. It can copy CDs, create data CDs/DVDs, or create a CD/DVD from an existing ISO image. It features the ability to measure the size of the data to be burned, as well as the amount of space needed for temporary files. It warns if the target CD/DVD is too small, can perform simulation burns, and can eject the CD/DVD when done.
Changes:
Many bugs have been closed. -x computes excluded data size and subtract it from the total size. msinfo cdrecord parsing has been fixed. Now an empty media check is done only with a CD-writing command. No check for -e and -h options. Audio file names are now escaped before cdrecord (this avoids problems with characters like " ' ".
