Dixie Chicks Pulled from Air After Bashing Bush Dude, these Texas people didn't find criticism of the president unpatriotic when Bill Clinton was president. They thought it was a sacred duty...Apparently country stations in Texas and elsewhere are pulling Dixie Chicks albums because their lead singer, while on an overseas tour, criticized Bush, saying she was ashamed to be from the state as him. People who want to criticize the critics of the critical comments are supporting the Chicks by buying their albums and requesting their songs. I never thought I'd buy a Dixie Chicks album, but that's what I'm going to do tonight, and I'm paying full price!

Metal Rubber

Metal Rubber 08/13/2004 11:04 AM

sci0804skin_A_423.jpg imageA new material called "Metal Rubber" may find its way into gadgets of the future due to its unique ability to be stretched, heated, and generally abused while still conducting electricity - and still able to snap back into form when the bending and smacking is over. Apparently the vendor NanoSonic is being inundated with requests to use the material, which is currently being produced via a painstaking process that builds up the material one layer of molecules at a time.

Our dreams of the Terminator condom may finally be realized. (Thanks, Aram!)

Burning
Rubber

« The smell of burning rubber. »

Cruising Night was last Friday but it seems I didn't get the memo about them first collecting in the harbour area before meeting in the icehall parking lot soo...it was too dark to really take any photos after 10p when the cars finally started arriving there. I only bothered with a few shots of the cars burning rubber on the lot for spectators and those who love the smell of burning rubber. I was disappointed since I do love classic cars.

And, barring any loss of motivation, the Prague photos will be available by sometime tomorrow.

FireWheel Rubber Band Gun

FireWheel Rubber Band Gun 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

firewheel.jpg imageIt's a shame I hadn't seen this Firewheel rubber band gun before now—entirely my fault, too, since apparently DansData reviewed it almost a week ago, yet I totally missed it. It's simple, cheap, and awesome, which is right up my alley. It's just a click-wheel rubber band gun, but the nautilus shell design allows you to pop off one of the ten loaded rubber bands at a time, hold it down for a full-auto burst, or just rock semi somewhere in between. It's an Australian design, but they've got an outlet here in the US, so there might just be a chance I can make some mothers unhappy with a few arms shipments to young boys. (Thanks, Matt!)

Feeling like a cog with a rubber stamp

Feeling like a cog with a rubber stamp 09/15/2004 05:44 AM

Two years ago I marched in protest against the Japan National ID. Last year, after we failed, a few cities and prefectures resisted. Yokohama took the position that the bill was illegal because it required privacy protection and the privacy bill had not passed. They allowed citizens to opt out and an whopping 24% of their citizens opted out. Now that the privacy bill of the central government is in place, Yokohama is being forced to "normalize" with the central government. Last year, I accepted an appoint to the Yokoyama personal information protection committee which would oversee their integration of the national ID system with the hope that I could help them in their resistance. Today, almost a year after the first meeting, I spent the afternoon in what was basically a rubber stamp session. We voiced our opinions, but at this point there really wasn't much choice. These inquiry committee are constitutionally defined organs for people to interact with the law making process, but I felt more like a cog with a rubber stamp than a participant in a democracy.

Rubber-Bladed Propello Fan

Rubber-Bladed Propello Fan 06/18/2004 08:01 AM

propello.jpg imageWe're trying summer this year in Brooklyn without an air conditioner, something that was impossible in the humid swamp lands of Kansas City, but seems possible this year due to our new space inside one of Brooklyn's cool, stone buildings. Of course, we're tactically placing fans about, too, so now added to the constant drone of our home built gaming PCs is the persistent whirr of spinning blades. So when black+blum says they have made a fan, called Propello, that removes the hum-inducing fan guards by making the blades out of relatively non-lethal rubber, and put it in a nice package, to boot, I have to think it looks a sight better than the cheap $10 box fans we have peppering the apartment. Unfortunately, for the price of one small Propello, I could buy 13 box fans and spend all day floating on a cushion of air.

The Battle for the Broadcast Bands

The Battle for the Broadcast Bands 05/06/2004 01:07 PM
The FCC is considering a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) to open up un-used broadcast television bands for unlicensed use.  It adopted a notice of inquiry exploring this possibility last year, but an NPRM would be a significant step forward -- it would mean the FCC has specific proposals that, following public comment, it can actually adopt.

This is a huge opportunity.  All the innovation and investment in unlicensed wireless to date has occurred in narrow, noisy, high-frequency bands.  Because of their propagation characteristics, the broadcast frequencies are the best place to create new broadband alternatives.  Former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt advoca ted this point in his Senate testimony last week.

Unfortunately, and predictably, the incumbent broadcasters aren't happy with the idea.  Even though they would be some of the biggest beneficiaries of opening up the broadcast band "white space" which is now completely un-used, they see anything that increases usable wireless capacity eroding their lucrative government-granted oligopoly.

A source tells me that FCC Chairman Powell wants to put the broadcast band NPRM on the FCC's open meeting agenda for next week, but he is facing furious opposition from the broadcasters.  If you care about creating new opportunities for wireless innovation and broadband deployment, now is the time to push the FCC to do the right thing.

More Bands Putting Concerts Online

More Bands Putting Concerts Online 01/22/2004 06:28 AM
We've talked about bands like Phish and Pearl Jam experimenting with offering recordings of their live shows to fans online, and it appears that plenty of other musicians are signing up to do the same thing. There are a couple of interesting angles on this one. First, it's a way for the bands to (mostly) cut out the recording industry middlemen they have to deal with most of the time. Live shows are how bands usually connect with fans, and this opens up those shows to a much wider audience. At the same time, many of the bands are choosing to offer these concert recordings without any copy protection - and they're selling like crazy. There's a great quote in the article from Brad Serling, who runs the site that many of these bands are using: "The No. 1 issue that most of the music industry has wrong is D.R.M. Why make it harder for people to buy your product? The answer is fear, and you have to get over the fear. What would you do if you walked into Tower Records to buy the new Dave Matthews Band CD and the guy behind the counter said: 'Here's your CD. It's $18, but you can only listen to it in your den on one stereo. You can't take it to the car. You can't put it on your iPod.' You would laugh at him and walk out, right? It's the same thing here." Offer something to people that they want, and you'll be amazed at what they're willing to pay for.
