06/01/2004 11:58 AMTAIPEI, Taiwan -- Intel Corp. is developing support for location-based

Future Intel Mobile Chips to Add
Location-Based Services
06/03/2004 01:35 PMThough it's impossible to consider without thinking of the
inevitable exploits (from Big Brotherish agencies and rowdy script
kiddies alike), Intel has said they are developing support within
their mobile processor line to allow computers to be aware of their
physical location at all times. Although nothing is set in stone yet,
Intel is working with others (Microsoft, for example) to add features
that would integrate simple things like, say, selection of which
printer to use based on proximity into future laptops and mobile
devices. Sounds okay, but also the sort of thing that will probably
hit all at once as mobile phones are already gaining GPS abilities and
Bluetooth short range communication -- soon all of our devices will
know where you are and will be happy to tattle to each other where
you're hiding, whether you like it or not.

Location based media
Location based media
04/11/2004 02:29 PMThis is something Mikel and Marc Eisenstadt will like.
The Art and Science of
Location and Media.
I came across two interesting
experiments involving location metadata and media today.
First,
scientists Roberto Cipolla
and Duncan Robertson at
the University of Cambridge are building a
system for inferring location from image content:
Roberto Cipolla and Duncan Robertson have developed a program that
can match a photograph of a building to a database of images. The
database contains a three-dimensional representation of the real-life
street, so the software can work out where the user is standing to
within one metre.
Their project is the inverse of the Mobile Media Metadata project, which aims to infer image content
from contextual metadata (including location). It is interesting to
consider how the technologies might work together: taking a picture of
a building tells the system where you are (South Hall).
Knowing where you are tells the system what you are doing there
(attending class), from which it can infer who the people in the
picture are (your classmates)
Second, artists Pall Thayer, Sara Kolster, and Pete Gomes are playing with the
concept of geocinema,
using open-source tools to superimpose GPS coordinates on
video on real-time. Cool, but how much more interesting would it
be if they could:
- convert those coordinates to higher-level semantic location
metadata ("the place I passed out last night"), and
- use that metadata not just for superimposing on the video but as
input for determining the structure of the video
narrative?

Mobile Phone Location Services Ready for

05/27/2004 07:50 AMReuters - The use of a mobile phone to pinpoint
a caller's location and nearby businesses was a hot concept
when the tech bubble peaked in 2000, but only now with better
phones and software does it stand to succeed, companies say.
Mobile operators are selling much-improved services that help
users locate friends or get directions to the nearest train
station, but they have to fight off consumers' bad memories
from 2000 and 2001, when they offered illegible maps on tiny
black-and-white screens.

Couple Busted In Online Coupon Scam
Couple Busted In Online Coupon Scam
04/15/2004 02:23 PMFake online coupons are nothing new, but this short AP article about a
couple
being arrested for selling thousands of dollars worth of fake online
coupons has me a bit confused. The woman says she stopped as soon
as she found out it was illegal - which raises a bunch of other
questions not answered by the article. Was she creating the coupons
herself? If so, then she must have known it was illegal. If not,
where were they coming from? The article does mention that her
husband was charged with "forgery, fraud, theft and other crimes," so
it's possible that he was creating the fake coupons and giving them to
her to sell. Still, you might think she would have asked where they
came from. Of course, I also wonder
who buys coupons? I
always thought coupons were the things you got for free with the
Sunday paper.
