Welcome to Marshmallow Peeps! 04/11/2004 12:20 AM
I've been singing the peeps Easter commercial all day today. It's been on TV at 2:45 in the afternoon (my lunch break) for the last 2 weeks at least. I was trying to find the commercial or just the song on the web but I can't find it. What I did find i

Aprica Marshmallow J-Turn

Aprica Marshmallow J-Turn 08/19/2004 03:13 PM

aprica_marshmallow_3.jpg imageWhen I say "Marshmallow J-Turn," two things should instantly spring to mind. "Oh, a Japanese product," should be the first, and "Whaaaaa?" For once, though, the product name almost makes sense: the Aprica Marshmallow J-Turn is a hyper-padded, 5-point-harness baby immobilizer that masquerades as a car seat. It seems that Japanese babies have skulls particularly sensitive to thumps and impacts - at least if you take Aprica's word for it.

If you want to pretend your newborn is the nougaty center of a foam-covered safety bundle (and you can figure out someone who is importing them) the Aprica Marshmallow J-Turn 838 Thermo-Mamoru Sp02 will set you back a cool grand.

This physics HOWTO explains a technique for verifying ht espeed of light using a microwave oven and a bunch of marshmallows.
[P]ut the dish of marshmallows in the microwave and cook on low heat. Microwaves do not cook evenly and the marshmallows will begin to melt at the hottest spots in the microwave. (I leaned this from our Food Science teacher Anita Cornwall.) Heat the marshmallows until they begin to melt in four or five different spots. Remove the dish from the microwave and observe the melted spots. Take the ruler and measure the distance between the melted spots. You will find that one distance repeats over and over. This distance will correspond to half the wavelength of the microwave, about 6 cm. Now turn the oven around and look for a small sign that gives you the frequency of the microwave. Most commercial microwaves operate at 2450 MHz.

All you do now is multiply the frequency by the wavelength. The product is the speed of light.

Down with my Peeps

Down with my Peeps 04/10/2004 11:04 PM
Online gallery of Easter-themed diorama art created with Marshmallow Peeps. What are Peeps? Well, the Washington Post says they're "the chick-and-bunny-shaped marshmallow treats that have become America's best-loved harbingers of the season". You might call these images of winning art contest entries -- yes, yes -- a PEEP show. Huhhuhhuh. I think my favorite is this Mel Gibson homage, The Passion of the Peeps.

Snip from the show review:

"Another religious entry could be described as Memorable Moments in Marshmallow Martyrdom. Created by two Catholic school girls, it depicted four saint scenes, including John the Baptist beheaded, Joan of Arc being burned at the stake, St. Peter crucified upside down on Pop-sicle sticks and St. Stephen being stoned to death by jelly beans."

Dan Gillmor is one of my favorite peeps 08/01/2004 01:32 PM

Here's Dan's comments after the launch party of his new book "We, the Media". NOTE: I got to bring my twins Aron and Jacob to the party. That was fun showing them off.

Here's Dan's post....

J.D. Lasica and Brian Dear were among the folks who came to last night's gathering celebrating the book launch and the relocation of Creative Commons to its new offices in San Francisco. I was honored by the presence of so many fine folks.

The book was published under a Creative Commons license, permitting non-commercial use of the material as long as people give it proper attribution and add their "remixes" back into the world under a similar license. (The book will be online in full very soon on the publisher's official site.)

In my brief remarks to the folks who'd gathered last evening, I talked about the great value Creative Commons is giving to all of us, by doing its part to restore a tiny bit of balance in the copyright regime. I doubt many publishers would have allowed me to live up to what I've been saying on copyright these past few years, and I'm grateful that I have a publisher who totally gets it.

(Cross-posted to We the Media.)

[Dan Gillmor]

Brian Dear and JD Lasica also had their own posts on the party. Here's some of Brian's shots.....
