Microsoft Creates Anti-Virus Bounty To
Help Track Down Virus Writers
11/05/2003 10:59 AMWhat do you if you're in an unchartered area with no reasonable law
enforcement, and criminals are running rampant? You convince everyone
to become the "enforcement" arm and find someone rich enough to pay
them to help fight crime. Microsoft can't be bothered to fix a few of
the holes in their programs that make it incredibly easy to pass on
viruses, so instead, they're
setting aside $5 million for anti-virus bounty hunters who can
track down anyone responsible for worms, trojan horses or viruses.
The rewards will be given out in $250,000
wads of cash from
Bill Gates wallet increments. So, now, who's going to round
up an anti-virus posse?

artStream Alliance Newsreader Brings RSS One Step Closer to
Mainstream
"SmartStream Alliance (http://smartstreamalliance.com/
) just released a desktop newsreader for the Kerry campaign
that uses technology from MyST Technology Partners. This demonstrates
a unique perspective concerning smart Internet applications and the
use of RSS in friendlier ways. Imagine the possibilities as you
experiment with this free download." [Th
ink Outside The Feed]
This is an interesting step for RSS readers, but it would make more
sense to make this web-based, rather than a desktop client. In another
step towards the mainstream, Time
Magazine has named Bloglines one of its 50 Coolest
Websites. Here's the write-up for it:
"If you want to stay plugged into the world of politics,
technology, show business or any other area of professional or
personal interest, you have to read Web logs, a.k.a. blogs,
regularly-updated personal or collaborative online journals. The best
ones are in some ways more relevant and more influential than
mainstream media outlets. To keep up, let Bloglines track your
favorites and deliver their latest posts in one neat package. Other
good blog-aggregator services include Kinja.com, a similar though somewhat shaky service
(it just launched a few months ago) that shows promise as a tour guide
for those entering the blogosphere for the first time, and Blogdex.net, MIT Media
Lab's study in 'contagious media' that lists the fastest-spreading
ideas and news items based on how many blogs are buzzing about
them."
This is the
second time that Time has highlighted the benefits of an RSS news
aggregator without referring to the jargon acronym RSS itself.

Airy BBC Article
Airy BBC Article
01/05/2004 01:39 PMThe BBC has a silly article about Wi-Fi written by a reporter who
fails to include any sort of insight or analysis between statistics:
The piece hinges on the buzz around BT OpenZone's plans to offer free
Wi-Fi access from Jan. 26 through Feb. 1. The stunt aims to boost
awareness and increase use of the network. Looks to me like another
sign that the big operators are still struggling with a business model
around Wi-Fi....

Onion Article
Onion Article
07/28/2004 04:28 PMSo Rob sends me this
Onion Article.
Many web users were trapped without service Monday, when a
large section of the Internet collapsed under the weight of the
millions of baby pictures posted online. "Some personal web pages
contain literally hundreds of adorable infant photos," MCI senior
vice-president Vinton Cerffe said. "Add to that the number of precious
pumpkins on photo-sharing sites like Ophoto.com, and anyone can see it
was a recipe for disaster. The Internet simply was not designed to
support so much parental pride."
I'm not sure why he sent it to ME, though. Why, Rob? Why?
(There actually must be some truth to this article. The hard disk I
keep my baby pictures on crapped out this weekend, and it's less than
a year old.)
