Delphi Readers Choice Awards

Delphi Readers Choice Awards 08/03/2004 06:01 PM

Although I've flirted with other languages, all of my shareware applications (HomeSite, TopStyle, FeedDemon) were coded using Borland Delphi. One of the great things about Delphi is that there are so many excellent third-party components and tools available, many of which were just honored in Delphi Informant Magazine's 2004 Readers Choice Awards. Since I get a number of emails asking which tools I use, I figured I'd highlight some of the winners that I rely on.

TopStyle and FeedDemon both use the excellent Express Bars and ExpressQuantumGrid component suites from Developer Express. Developer Express is one of few companies whose products I would buy without even trying them out - they're that good.

I use FinalBuilder to automate the creation of each TopStyle and FeedDemon build, and I wouldn't live without it. Likewise, I wouldn't live without AQTime, which I rely on for locating performance bottlenecks in my code.

Notably absent from the awards is the superb InnoSetup installer. Even though InnoSetup is free, I gladly donated to the developer since his work has saved me a lot of headaches.

Last week I told you a tale of woe about a network manager who, in attempting to upgrade his hardware managed to cause himself huge problems with NDS. Of course, the easiest way to preserve NDS during a hardware upgrade is to remove it entirely from the server to be upgraded and then push out a new replica from the master once the upgrade is completed. But when your network only has one server (as does the one in question), you can't do that. Or can you?

Adobe Jumps The Shark, Reader's

Adobe Jumps The Shark, Reader's
Classification As Spyware Not Far Behind
03/14/2005 06:07 PM

I'm not working from a Windows box as much as I used to these days, so maybe I'm a little too blissfully isolated from the sheer volume of crap that most of you put up with from your computer each day.

Tonight, though, I was working from my wife's PC at home, and I fired up Adobe Reader (The Reader Formerly Known As Acrobat) to look at a PDF. I've become accustomed to the annoying popup window in the last few versions that remind you of "important updates", and I saw this:

Abode
Update Screenshot

What the crap, man?! Since when is Photoshop Album an "Update" to Reader?! And Yahoo Toolbar?! They've co-opted the at least (dubiously) useful update program to shill their crap.

Don't get me wrong. I think Photoshop Album is probably the best photo management program available today. In fact, I already have the full version installed, which makes the update suggestion even more idiotic.

It's insane to dilute the interface with this sort of garbage. I will now dismiss anything that ever appears in the update list as marketing BS, which means that the update system is now broken because I'll never use it. Even if it wasn't, the popup window was a horrible way to notify for updates anyway. Firefox's subtle icon in the toolbar is a far better way to handle this.

As an app, Reader should be basically invisible. The ultimate goal of the app should be that, whenever I click on a PDF, it starts instantly and immediately displays me that PDF in a manner that's optimal for onscreen reading, and provides just a few simple tools that I might need. Anything else is serving Adobe, not me, and that makes the app less valuable. The splash screen is lame, and the popup update notice is asinine. Adding other apps to the software update notice is "Pulling a RealPlayer".

Reader's Circle: An Online Directory for Book Clubs and Reading Groups
http://readerscircle.org/in dex.html

If you've been looking for a way to connect with book-related groups, this is it. Reader's Circle is a free online directory for book clubs and reading groups. Anyone may post a listing or search for a group by zip code - all for free. But now to introduce the concept of a reader's circle. A reader's circle is a social gathering where people can drop in with whatever they're reading and share in open conversation among other readers with similar interests. Participants simply bring something they're reading or have recently read, and conversation goes from there. The intent is to loosen the usual format so participants can select their own reading and attend meetings even if they're still in the middle of a book. Conversation inevitably covers the books brought and many other subjects as well. Another feature of reader's circles is that there are three basic types: 1) Academic Reader's Circles - for serious study of a particular subject, 2) Civic Reader's Circles - serving as an informal public forum, and 3) Social Reader's Circles - primarily for getting to know people, but organized around a subject none the less; frequently an age range is also specified. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

As other top rated collectible manufactures look to miniature versions of their line (Master Replica's .45 series and Gentle Giant's Bust Ups), should Code 3 explore the option? Going back to the vintage days, the Star Wars line has had a long history with Die-cast Metal, with nothing offered in that format since galoob's Episode I line, should Code 3 fill that void? • The secret's out!

Hi! I'm Paul Yuknewicz, Program Manager for the team that designed and brought you Visual Basic Express and the general Express Edition line. I'm super excited to be onsite at the TechEd Europe keynote watching the crowd see Express and MSDN Product Feedback Center for the first time. I'm also proud to kick off the Express blog so that we can chat about all things Express. It's a great feeling to finally be able to talk about it with you!
Express Editions of Visual Studio are all about enabling communities of learning developers, hobbyists, and enthusiast to get started quickly creating cool .NET applications. This is done by providing a totally light weight product: from a 35-80 mb download, to a 5 minute install time, to a simplified and nimble IDE (developer environment). It's easy to get started using resources on the start page that help you build applications, learn how to program (if you're not a maven already), and connect to the community. You can see for yourself right now by downloading Express from here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/Express/).

  • Visual Studio and SQL Server Express Editions Announced

This morning at TechEd Europe, we announced the introduction of "Express" editions of a number of Visual Studio tools and SQL Server. The Express products are lightweight, easy to use, easy to learn tools for hobbyists, enthusiasts, and students who want to build dynamic Windows applications and Web sites. We also announced the release of Visual Studio 2005 Beta 1.

  • SQL Server Express - Initial thoughts (by yag)

Man, blogging is addictive. I'm supposed to be paying attention in this session... Anyway, wanted to note a few things about SQL Express because I haven't seen a lot about this online yet - though I expect that to change.
First - some of the capabilities:

    • Support for XCopy style deployment
    • No workload governor
    • Support for databases up to 4Gb in size
    • Support for up to 50 instances
    • Only supports 1 processor
    • Only supports 512 Mb of RAM
