Windows XP System File Checker

Windows XP System File Checker 04/12/2004 02:21 PM

scannow sfc: Here's a handy Windows XP feature I had never heard of until today.

From a command prompt, type "sfc /scannow" and Windows will look through all its system files for ones that don't match up with the others (if, for instance, a third party app replaced them with older versions). If it finds any, it will replace them off the install CD.

The main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file.

Perhaps you get a dialog box appear informing you of a problem with a .dll file, or your program will just not load! It is therefore worth checking to see if there are any corrupt system files using scannow sfc.

Additionally, this is a fantastic article on the utility. Well-written, well-researched, and full of debugging information should you have a problem. We need more tech support articles written like this one.

"sfc" stands for "System File Checker."

Anyone an expert on the WinXP file system?: I'm on the same wavelength as Greenspun here, and I've actually pursued this a bit. Using the Indexing Service you can get a lot of information about files, and it's not that hard o re-purpose that meta into something else.

Furthermore, using WMI, you can capture events from the file system — have a script execute whenever a file is added to a certain folder, for instance, or when a file is modified or deleted. There's a lot of untapped potential in the Windows file system. With enough time, you could make a heck of a content management system out of nothing but XML files in a directory structure.

I'm thinking of writing a tutorial on how to use the Windows XP file system as a photo database. [...] the Windows file system seems likely to outlive many of us [...] if you create a document using Notebook and click right on the file icon then select Properties you get to a page where a "Summary" tab is an option. You now have the opportunity to edit Title, Subject, Author, Category, Keywords, and Comments fields. These fields are searched if you use the built-in Windows file search mechanism and look for "a word or a phrase in a file"

If you like the idea of expanded meta information for files, It's the Content is a good system that allows you to define your own meta in an environment that's an extension of the Windows file system. Not that expensive, either.

Google File System 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
The Google File System [PDF], by Sanjay Ghemawat, Howard Gobioff, and Shun-Tak Leung of Google. This is a technical paper that explains Google's custom scalable cluster filesystem for storing their gigantic database of the entire Web across thousands of low-cost PCs.First, component failures are the norm rather than the exception. The file system consists of hundreds or even thousands of storage machines built from inexpensive commodity parts and is accessed by a comparable number of client machines. The quantity and quality of the components virtually guarantee that some are not functional at any given time and some will not recover from their current failures. We have seen problems caused by application bugs, operating system bugs, human errors, and the failures of disks, memory, connectors, networking, and power supplies. Therefore, constant monitoring, error detection, fault tolerance, and automatic recovery must be integral to the system.Probably only interesting to real geeks....

The Lycos File System?

The Lycos File System? 09/10/2004 08:40 PM
In the last week or so there's been a lot of buzz about a hack that would let people use their 1 gig Gmail account as an online file storage system, called the Gmail Filesystem. Of course, this is a hack and one that Google is likely to shut down before too long. However, you have to wonder if it's just a coincidence that Lycos is now getting ready to announce what sounds like the Lycos file system. They had already announced plans to offer 1 gig for email -- though not for free, and the latest plans indicate that they'll let people use the space to store any kind of files they want. It's almost amusing to see the search engine/portal players back into the world that many predicted they would own years ago. Of course, the question is how quickly will Google and others respond?

Anyone an expert on the WinXP file
system?

Anyone an expert on the WinXP file
system?
01/07/2004 03:31 PM

I'm thinking of writing a tutorial on how to use the Windows XP file system as a photo database.  My theory is based on the following premises:

  • people need a database method that will last 30+ years
  • very few software products have a 30+ year life
  • ergo, one cannot rely on a proprietary photo database and even reliance on a standard relational database management system (RDBMS) such as Oracle may be risky
  • the average consumer photographer does not have time/inclination to write computer programs nor to maintain an RDBMS
  • the Windows file system seems likely to outlive many of us
  • if you create a document using Notebook and click right on the file icon then select Properties you get to a page where a "Summary" tab is an option.  You now have the opportunity to edit Title, Subject, Author, Category, Keywords, and Comments fields.  These fields are searched if you use the built-in Windows file search mechanism and look for "a word or a phrase in a file"
  • ergo, Windows seems to have the capability of recording a photo caption, extra keywords, and indexing those

If you look at the properties of a Word document and click "Advanced" from the Summary tab you find a whole lot more properties and they are editable.  There is also a Custom tab on a Word document in which you can create your own property name/value pairs.  However these property values don't seem to be searchable using the standard Windows search tool.  If you look at the properties of a JPEG taken with a digital camera and choose Advanced you see a huge list of "Image" properties separated from the default Windows file system Description and Origin fields.  Some but not all of these fields seem to be searchable.

So... to the questions:

  1. where are these file system features documented?
  2. is it possible to add, on a system-wide basis, an extra default property that will appear in the simple or advanced dialog boxes?
  3. how does one add extra properties to an individual file that wasn't created in Office?  Is it possible through menus and dialog boxes?
  4. any other comments from an expert on the viability of using the Windows file system and its full-text indexer as a photo database?

Thanks for helping!  Posting ideas in the comment section is most welcome but email to philg@mit.edu would also be appreciated.

“WinZip 9.0 SR-1 is a maintenance release of WinZip 9.0. The changes involve general improvements to the WinZip code, bug fixes, and updates to error messages and to the Help text. The main new feature in this version of WinZip is that it displays caution messages in some situations, such as when you double-click on a .EXE file compressed within a Zip file, to warn that you are working with a file type that could potentially contain a virus. These caution messages can easily be turned off by WinZip users who frequently work with the file types involved.”

Orrin Hatch wants to ban P2P networks that are used for music-sharing, claiming that their non-infringing uses are negligible. He even held hearings on his Induce bill to make the point. Video of those hearings are now available on a P2P system called Bittorrent that allows lots of people to simultaneously download large files by portioning out the burden of serving parts of the file to everyone who's trying to get a copy.

Download a copy of the hearings for yourself, participate in the democratic process, and in so doing, prove that their conclusions were utterly bogus. Torrent Link

1 Million Free Songs for Download

1 Million Free Songs for Download 07/29/2004 03:28 PM

In my experience, most of the RIAA-hating nerds who swear they'll never to buy another album again continue to download copyrighted, RIAA-financed music from less-than-legal sources (and I've done it, too, so simmer down). What's crazy, though, is that if you really don't want to bend any laws, there is a wealth of free music online -- and The Red Ferret Journal just set up a Wiki (a user-edited web page) to make it even easier. There are hundreds of thousands of freely downloadable songs on the websites listed (some of them are even not techno) and thousands more non-RIAA-backed labels selling songs, too -- so if you really want to fill up that iPod without "stealing music," you do have an option to do so.

Mainly, though, I just wanted you to feel extra guilty when you download RIAA music anyway.
