Alias: Geek / Spy Lovefest

Alias: Geek / Spy Lovefest 04/12/2004 02:21 PM

I watch watching Alias last night, and I realized just what a hacker/geek-fest this show is becoming. Here are some details from the plot last night:

A computer worm is spreading across the globe, specifically targeting hospitals. It turns out that it's searching databases of DNA (do these exist?) for a specific match.

My boy Marshall manages to find the hacker on an IRC channel and finds out that he's going to be in a club in Berlin. Too bad no one knows what he looks like.

Never fear — Marshall was able to detect the MAC address of the wireless card the hacker uses in his PDA. Sydney and Vaughn go to the club and use special sunglasses to detect the PDA and then send the hacker a message by what I think was a case of bluejacking.

He gets shot (truth be told — anyone within a 100 foot radius of Sydney usually gets shot at some point), but manages to pass Vaughn a USB Flash drive that contains the code of the worm. Sydney and Vaughn then decrypt the code to try and stop the worm before it kills everyone...or something (I kind of lost track here).

This isn't the first time they've geeked out. There have been numerous other geek references in the show, including the use of Trill ian, which has got to be a first for prime time. If you're a geek and your Sunday nights are a little slow, check this show out.

David Cronenberg talks geek tech
philosphy on "Alias" TV show

Via "Amy's Robot" blog:
David Cronenberg was on Alias last night, playing a neuroscientist with an experimental method for recovering lost memories through the use of drugs and lucid dreaming. The episode itself is almost an homage to Cronenberg's ideas and visual style...as Sidney undergoes DC's process, the show turns into one of the more visually and conceptually cinematic bits of TV I've seen in a while, full of Cronenberg's illogical logic, layered realities, and of course the requisite bit of Cronenberg's nonsensical corniness. In any case, before the experiment gets started, DC's character offers a nice little monologue about simulation, postmodernism, lucid dreaming, and fake bacon. Watch:

David Cronenberg on Alias talking about postmodernism and reality [mp3, 2.5 mins, 1.8 mb]

If you missed him this week, he'll be on next week, too.

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems
09/21/2004 06:38 AM

The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo™ DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

Alias: The Video Game

Alias: The Video Game 04/15/2004 07:38 PM

'Alias' takes on the gaming world: I'm not a big gamer, but this could temp me to start.

The main character — agile, clever and impossibly beautiful superspy Sydney Bristow (played by the agile, clever and impossibly beautiful actress Jennifer Garner) — could easily hold her own with the gallery from "Mortal Kombat."

Add in the fact that "Alias" and its epic, sometimes shocking sometimes schmaltzy storylines can be as engrossing as "Metal Gear Solid," one can convincingly argue that "Alias" is really just a video game that happens to come on your TV every Sunday night.

Apparently Marshall plays a prominent role. As it should be.
