The ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are increasingly confident to travel internationally. National Cell Phone Directory Launch

National Cell Phone Directory Launch 08/05/2004 03:56 AM
We are launching the first "opt in" national cell phone and VoIP directory online. The CTIA currently has plans to launch its own directory after the first of the year. Because of this, there are three different versions of the Wireless 411 Privacy Act in congress-two in the senate and one in the house. Here are a few ways in how our directory is different and why we support the wireless legislation.1. Our directory is completely "opt in"2. No fees for being listed or unlisted.3. Consumer has control of his or her information-not the wireless carrier.4. It will be online for anyone to access.5. Other information such as VoIP numbers and other contact info can be listed. [PRWEB Aug 5, 2004]

Kim Komando did a nice article on buying camera phones recently. She discusses the importance of checking out the quality of the phone by reading reviews and being selective when choosing a wireless carrier. She then goes on to advise that you “try it before you buy it”. Snap some photos to see how the images turn out. Her message is clear as she explains that you need to know what to expect from your carrier and what features you are wanting from your phone.

Mobile Users Top 1.5 Billion

"As of the first week of June 2004, the mobile service industry broke the 1.5 billion subscriber mark worldwide. Research firm EMC also predicts that the industry will pass the 2 billion mark as early as 2006, far earlier than some other predictions, and reach 2.45 billion by the end of 2009." [infoSync World]

Guess where a lot of that growth is going to come from?

G eneration Text

"New research from Mobile Youth - a mobile telecoms consultancy - found that 700,000 (20%) of primary school children own mobile phones and that the under 10s "represent the fastest-growing segment of mobile phone ownership within Britain".

'They are the key fashion accessory which no self respecting child can do without,' says the report. It predicts that by 2006, more than one million primary school kids (a third of all five-to-nine year olds) will own mobiles." [The Guardian]

Cell Phones Find Hotspots

Cell Phones Find Hotspots 09/17/2004 12:24 PM
A new service in the UK lets Wi-Fi users find nearby hotspots with their cell phones: By sending a text message to a certain mailbox, users will receive a list of the nearest Wi-Fi hotspots. The service offers up hotspots that are near the cell site that the user's phone is communicating with. This is a fantastic offering for finding hotspots in an area users may not be familiar with. There are plenty of hotspot locators online, but they require users to investigate hotspots in the area in advance. For all the procrastinators out there or for folks who may find themselves unexpectedly in need of a hotspot, the cell phone locator service is great. Now this company just needs to start offering the service in the United States…...
