David Pescovitz:
The BBC reports that prison inmates in Australia milked redback
spiders and shot up the venom to get high.
But a prison spokesman, Brian Kelly, was sceptical about
the veracity of the claim the venom was used as a narcotic, saying it
had come from a single unreliable inmate. Mr Kelly said the spiders
were more likely to have been kept as pets.

Wi-Fi Paranoia Too High?
Wi-Fi Paranoia Too High?
05/20/2004 01:08 AMDavid Pogue wonders if the concern about Wi-Fi security is at too high
a pitch for home users: Pogue's email column, archived online, this
week questions whether there's too much focus on security. Now, I'm
the first to agree with him that people with home wireless networks
that aren't near neighbors have nothing to fear. Even if you have near
neighbors, enabling WEP or WPA, as Pogue recommends, lowers your risk
from low to nil. (WEP's key weakness that enables a cracker to break a
key and access a network could require weeks of network monitoring to
extract enough data to carry that out. It's only a quick crack on
high-usage business Wi-Fi networks.) But Pogue doesn't separate out
different risk scenarios. My colleague and co-author on The Wireless
Networking Starter Kit, Adam Engst, wrote an excellent essay on how to
decide the level of exposure you have and how to mitigate it which
parallels Pogue on the home networking side, but is more granular on
risks outside the home network. Pogue opens his piece talking about
public Wi-Fi: "It's just so glorious to be standing in an airport,
hotel lobby or city street, open your laptop, and discover that you
can go online at cable-modem speeds without hooking up a single
cable." But the rest of his column focuses on home networking risks
where I generally agree with his take and his recommendations. Out in
the wild, the risks are quite high that someone could be monitoring an
open free or fee-based Wi-Fi hotspot network -- it's probably 1,000 to
10,000 times more likely that someone is using software to monitor a
hotspot than a home network. I have a piece of software that I can run
that automatically captures all passwords passing over any network
connection, Wi-Fi or otherwise, that requires me to press a single
keystroke to activate. You should never conduct unsecured transactions
over public hotspots using FTP, email, or the Web for this reason: it
requires no effort to capture those passwords, and people may capture
them idly. At the very least, your email password should be secured
via APOP (authenticated POP), which creates a one-time use token for
access. Your email would still pass in the clear, but your password
would be protected. Better, try to use SSL for email (POP and SMTP),
or read your email with a Web browser using an SSL...

First Day of Junior High
First Day of Junior High
09/01/2004 11:27 AM
I pulled another all nighter, but I couldn't go to sleep this
morning because today
is a special day for my son.He just left on a bus to go to his
junior
highschool (6th grade, wow...almost a man). It was his first
ride on regular
bus and alone at that. This morning he barely ate breakfast
because he was excited
as well as nervous. I thought I should just pretend today
wasn't special so
I was in bed when he left our house. I didn't last more than
a few minutes.
I grabbed my camera and ran out after him.
My son riding samTrans to junior high
Since I haven't posted much pictures lately, how about a couple
more?
Happy to be buried alive!
Above was taken just a stone throw from our campsite at Lake

and hanging out at the beach at the same time is the best kind of
camping.
Neighborhood racoon after tasting our grapes
I was working at night when I heard a loud noise outside.
When I looked out,
I saw this racoon going through our small patch of
grapevines. It sat on the
wooden support and ate all the grapes, one by one, while I was
staring at it.
Racoons must have special kind of nerves. Above shot was
taken when it got up
to leave. So long and thanks for all the grapes, it
seemed to be saying.
Next year, I know what it will be saying, Hmm. These
grapes taste different
from last year. How do I know? Because I'll be
marking my grapes the
same way as dogs do with fire hydrants. Hah!

High-End iChat
High-End iChat
04/30/2004 07:19 PMI should confess that I am the worst kind of obsessive high-end audio
weenie. Fortunately, it’s my only really expensive hobby; I
distinctly prefer beer to champagne. Anyhow, this creates a problem:
when you upgrade your system to get better sound, what do you do with
the old stuff? High-end gear tends to last more or less forever, and
unlike computers, is usually 80% as good as what you replace it with.
So, I’ve used some of that stuff to cobble together a home-office
system. I’m taking the audio feed out of my PowerBook via USB to a
(now apparently discontinued, sigh)
Stereo-Link D/A converter, then
through very decent
Linn
interconnects to an all-tube (and very beautiful)
Cary Audio Design “Rocket 88”
power amp, driving a pair of the original
Totem “Model One”
speakers (a dozen years old now). You can bet that I’m happy that
iTunes now includes a lossless music encoder; I’m going to have to
go back and junk all the existing MP3s I’ve ripped and grab ’em
again. Anyhow, I just had my first audio
iChat talk since I got this
wired up, with
Paul Hoffman,
on the subject of Atom and the IETF. It was astounding, remarkable,
unlike any mere “telephone” experience. Had I shut my eyes and
you’d told me that Paul was sitting across the desk, I would have
believed you.
