Estonian Coffers Bulge from Booze-Cruising Finns (Reuters)
Estonian Coffers Bulge from Booze-Cruising Finns (Reuters)08/06/2004 07:42 AM Reuters - A rush of thirsty Finns making the
short trip across to neighboring Estonia to stock up on cheap
booze and beer have boosted state coffers in the small Baltic
EU newcomer, the Finance Ministry said on Thursday. Revenues
from alcohol taxes rose more than 40 percent in June from the
same period last year to 162 million kroons ($12.49 million) as
Finns booze-cruised to the ex-Soviet state, and early estimates
suggest a similar rise for July.

Japanese Robot Supermodel
Japanese Robot Supermodel03/14/2005 06:03 PM Okay, don't get too excited, this isn't quite as life-like as you
imagined when you saw the headline. Roland Piquepaille sent us this
news
on Japanese robotics, "A
Japanese designer
has developed a mannequin robot, Palette, which can adapt its
movements
to the shoppers passing in front of it, according to an article
from Agence France-Presse (AFP), "Striking a robotic pose". Using
motion-capture technology, Palette will be able to act as a
supermodel.
And with its specialized sensors and software, it also will be able to
identify the sex and age of shoppers before transmitting them to store
owners for marketing purposes. The price has not been set yet, but
Palette should go on sale in 2005 in two versions: a body without legs
to showcase clothings, and a torso model for jewelry." See
Roland's blog for more
details and a photo of Palette, a robot which intentionally has no
face.
Another photo is available in a recent CNET
news article.

Canadian copyright petition goes to Parliament04/08/2005 05:28 AM Cory Doctorow:
The Canadian
Petition for User Rights, a statement signed by hundreds of people
asking the Canadian government to set out its Internet copyright
policies to respect privacy, fair dealing, and due process, was
presented to Parliament yesterday. Congrats to Digital-copyright.ca on
a job well done.
The second petition is signed by several hundred people, Mr. Speaker,
from both Burnaby--New-Westminster and throughout Canada, and focuses
on the Copyright act. Petitioners want this house to maintain the
balance between the rights of the public and the rights of the
creators. They demand that the government not extend the term of
copyright, and preserve all existing users' rights to ensure a vibrant
public domain. The petitioners also call upon parliament to ensure
that users are recognized as interested parties and are meaningfully
consulted about any proposed changes to the copyright act.

Parliament should place its debates under a CC license
Parliament should place its debates under a CC license07/22/2004 12:52 AM TheyWorkForYou.com, the
brilliant political action site that scrapes and reformats the record
of the UK Parliament, is technically in violation of the law:
Parliament holds a "Parliamentary Copyright" in its debates, and by
scraping and republishing them, TheyWorkForYou infringes upon it.
Richard Allan has a great solution to this problem:
What this is doing is forcing Parliament to look at how it handles
other people reproducing the material on the Official Parliamentary
Website. It would look awful if Parliament were to try and stop people
from using what is and should be public information. But the public
interest would not be served by people of dubious motives giving false
information by doctoring the official record.
What is the answer? Perhaps a Creative Commons license for the House
of Commons which can allow re-use of material without payment but
subject to conditions such as repetition in full without alteration? I
am starting to think there is a good campaign here to ask Parliament
to use appropriate Creative Commons licenses for all its output?
