New Sony
over-the-ear headphones, the MDR-Q66LW series, will be available in
Japan on the 10th for about $35. Besides the 6 colors, including house
favorite pink, a simple button press will cause the neck cord to be
found up entirely inside of the headphones, which makes not only for
easy storage, but for adjustable cord length. That means the cords are
cloth-insulated, love it or hate it, but you have to admit, it's a
nice design.

12/18/2003 03:27 AM A few weeks ago, on the way back from India, Rasmus let me use his
noise cancelling headphones for an hour or so on one of the flights.
Even though I understand the science behind how they worked (it's
really not that complicated), I'd always doubted how effective they
could really be. I was happily impressed. The headphones worked
surprisingly well. I'd say the blocked out a good 70% of the
consistent background noise, namely the engines. And that...

DJ1 PRO headphones
DJ1 PRO headphones
06/22/2005 01:54 AMUltrasone's DJ1 PRO headphones are closed-back, professional DJ
headphones.
The DJ1 PROs are foldable and come with one coiled 3 metre cable and
one coiled 3 metre cable with volume control and stereo/mono switch.
The headphones have a gold-plated 1/4" stereo jack with a 1/4"
gold-plated adapter and also come with a transportation bag, an extra
pair of ear pads, instruction manual and demo CD. The black travel
bag has a silver DJ Pro logo on the front and a draw string and fits
the headphones perfectly when they are folded up.
The cups on the DJ1 PROs are slightly larger than those on most other
DJ headphones, and the well-padded headband is wider than most to
provide additional support. The left cup has a jack to screw in the
one of the cables. The threaded 1/8-inch connection screws into the
ear cup and the 1/4-inch side connects on the other end. The cables
are durable and flexible and a good length. The headphones with their
large cups, have superior sound isolation and block out background
noise, even without any music playing.
Currently, most headphone drivers convert an electric signal into an
acoustical signal, producing low-frequency magnetic fields and,
according to Ultrasone, these emissions can be hazardous to our
health. Since professional DJs spend half of their lives using
headphones, Ultrasone developed a special MU Metal shielding to reduce
the radiation 98% more than current headphones on the market.
Featuring S-Logic Natural Surround Sound, the DJ1 PRO headphones have
a broad sound, allowing the user to distinguish directions and
distances for a more natural, concert-like sound. S-Logic allows up
to 40% lower dB output (3-4 dB) for the same loudness sensation which
could reduce the risk of hearing damage.
These great sounding headphones, their health care features and useful
accessories are the best sounding headphones that Spymac has tested,
but they are also the most expensive. Compared to Ultrasone's DJ1
headphones, the DJ1 PROs sound better with more clarity, and for
professionals, the options that come with the PRO model make them
worth the extra money. The DJ1 PROs sell for around $230-$250 through
several online retailers.

People are always asking me, "Why do I need a headphone
amplifier?" The answer is simple: to drive your pair of giant
headphones, of course. These 'Big Headphones' are just a design
project, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't build them yourself. If
someone tries to steal your iPod on the subway, you can comedically
percus them in the head like a pair of cymbols. This is a MAKE project
waiting to happen.

As
though to compete with Thanko's "Butterfly 2" offering, RWC has
announced the "itan EGOISTE" headphones with integrated MP3/WMA
player. There's a number of differences: the EGOISTE headphones are
"studio style" for better bass, have a 256MB capacity, and can act as
conventional headphones (for your iPod or whatever). Moreoever, the
cable has a microphone on it; you can use the EGOISTEs as a headset
for those long nights in front of Skype.

Pioneer swamped us with a
glut of wireless headphones, including the high-end E-DIR2000C which
features Dolby surround, DTS and AAC support, and a 48-bit DSP. Why
48-bits, you ask? We don't know! But numbers sure look good in
hardware reviews.
The rest of the sets are standard IR headsets that get about 29
hours (!!) of life on a few AAA batteries. They also support
12.24-Giggermunks Encoding and 9.10 Pioneer Surroundfield SussAround

the popular hand-held game console that looks like a laptop for Tom

North America in January 2003, have been sold. Until now, anyone using
one in public had to pay for an adapter to plug standard headphones
into the little $100 boxes, or impose their noises and tunes on
everyone within earshot.

AudioTechnica has a
number of 40mm headphones coming out, the most impressive of which is
the "ATH-T44." At 5,200 yen, the T44s provide a decent frequency
response from as low as 18Hz to as high as 23kHz. They have a thing
called the "Quick Headband Mechanism" for adjusting their position on
your head, by locking them in place after you find a comfortable
position, but I'm not sure how this really varies from other
headphones. The rest of the specifications are too technical for
me.

I can't tell if
Seidio's new 2 in 1 Headset is only for the Treo 600 or if
they're just capitalizing on that smartphone's success, but either way
the combination headphones/phone headset looks pretty decent, with one
touch call answering, and in-line volume control and all the other
things you'd expect from a hands-free kit. Plus, they sort of match
the Treo's look, because they're both made of plastic.

The Japan Victor Corporation (known to us as simply JVC)
has announced some new earphones dubbed "Rewind Be!", which allow for
the cable itself to be wound up inside of the housing.
Sure, you don't give a damn, especially because these are Japan
only (for now). Well, these are the "world's thinnest"
headphones with a wind-up cable, and they only cost about $18 USD. But
I like wind-up things, so you're going to have to deal.

Silent rave with wireless headphones
03/30/2005 04:33 AMCory Doctorow:
UK's Glastonbury music festival will get around a late-night ban on
loud bass by handing wireless headphones out to the attendees,
producing a silent rave:
"I like the idea of people dancing in total silence," said Emily
Eavis, one of the festival organisers and daughter of the founder
Michael Eavis. "Imagine if you were feeling a bit worse for wear and
thought, 'This would be a nice quiet place to sit down'.
"You would be completely freaked out to see 3000 people dancing in
silence. It's certainly quirky, but our big push this year is keeping
the noise down because that's what the council is keen on."
