MP3: Don't Stop 'til you Get to
Bollywood
04/13/2004 11:17 AM
A few days ago, Jonno pointed me to a Bollywood-flavored remake of Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," which he found on a supercool sekrit MP3 blog that shall remain nameless. This track is phat. This track is funky. This track makes me want to do a little dance in my ergonomic chair. A little google-digging reveals the song is by a group called the Bollywood Freaks, and came out on a limited edition red vinyl 7" in the UK. I want to send them money for the funk they provide. I want more of their music. If anyone has info, cough it up.

But for now -- look! Someone dumped a copy of said funky track on a server somewhere. Download the MP3 while it lasts. Link

We chased lady luck, 'til we finally
struck Bonanza.
08/05/2004 03:44 PM
In 1967 the television program Bonanza enjoyed a three-year run as the most-watched television show in the United States. Bonanza had not started well; its first two seasons returning disapointing ratings but kept alive by the bequest of (then) NBC-parent RCA. RCA had a vested interest in keeping the color series alive in order to push sales of their color technology.

That same year Bill and Joyce Anderson created The Ponderosa Ranch tourist attraction near Incline Village, Nevada on the site allegedly shown by the burn ing map in the opening credits. The property annually attracts nearly 350,000 tourists to Lake Tahoe's north shore to enjoy the surroun dings of a period recreation including mock gunfights, cowboy rope tricks and an honest 1860's-style saloon. Brooklyn residents: just say no to space

Brooklyn residents: just say no to space
elevators!
02/01/2005 08:37 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing reader Max Clarke says,
Recently on my blog, I put up an image of a mysterious flyer being posted in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (where, in recent years, community activists have fought real estate developers' plans to build luxury high-rises, and the city's plans to site trash facilities and power plants on the waterfront). The flyer is a masterful parody of all this. It reads:

"WILLIAMSBURG DOESN'T NEED A SPACE ELEVATOR! The Space Elevator Will Mean: Less Parking, Weird Ribbon Thing, Constant Loud Whirring Noise, Increased Space Elevator Truck Traffic. Developers have submitted plans to build a massive space elevator in Williamsburg! This monstrosity, completely out of context with existing development in the neighborhood, will be accessible only to the wealthy, forcing thousands of average Williamsburgers from their homes and live-work spaces! Jobs the elevator will generate (operators, repairmen, astronauts) are certain to go to non-residents! Don't sit idly by and let this elevator cast its impossibly long, cold, and very narrow shadow over our homes! CALL 311 AND TELL THEM 'I JUST DON'T NEED THIS SPACE ELEVATOR!'"

The flyer is credited to F.E.T.S.E.o.t.N (Fight Extremely Tall Space Elevators on the Northside), and includes the URL of an anti-space-elevator-in-Williamsburg Yahoo group.

Link. See also this proposed NYC rezoning plan, which includes a number of proposed 8-35 story luxury complexes in a currently working-class neighborhood with an average building height of 3 stories. Link. While this flyer is most certainly a joke, space elevators are not -- at least for some. Link (thanks for the reminder, Dr. Setebos)

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, founded in 1841, had the distinction of being the most widely read afternoon newspaper in the U.S. during the Civil War. After it ceased publication in 1955, the paper's morgue and related files were donated to the Brooklyn Public Library, but access to this vibrant collection of stories, photos and illustrations was limited to a few microfilm editions and fewer still print holdings. In 2001 the Brooklyn Library launched an extensive digitization project encompassing the years 1841-1902, funded through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and beta testing of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Online [www.brooklynpublicli brary.org/eagle] began in March 2003. The site was an immediate hit, accommodating an average of 60,000 visits a month. As expected, many visitors have used the site to track down genealogical information, but the library has also used the collection to provide access to primary documents on Civil War-era Brooklyn and African-American women's history to K-12 students. The library is now considering a second project to digitize the 1902-1955 issues, but must first grapple with the copyright implications for newspapers printed after 1923, as well as the significant increase in per-issue page volume in later years. More information on the project can be found at

Xeni Jardin: Color me jaded, but this call for a citywide "quivering saturnalia" to protest the RNC sounds more like an excuse to perv out in public, and less like actual political protest. But, hey, what do I know about Reichian energetics? Fleshbot says,
BOP If the skies are dark over New York City next week during the Republican National Convention, it may be due to the cloudbusting efforts of the Brooklyn Orgastic Politics Collective, who plan to combat the "Deadly Orgone Energy (DOR)" of Dubya and company with ... uh, something based on the theories of Wilhelm Reich ("Metaphorically speaking, our September 2nd project will be an attempt to give the sky a blowjob...")

04/19/2005 11:05 AM
David Pescovitz: My old friend Barnaby Whitfield is a pastel artist in New York City and member of the prestigious White Columns Curated Artist Registry. Barnaby's solo exhibition "Whore With Red Cheeks" opens this Friday, April 22, at the 31GRAND gallery in Brooklyn's Williamsburg:
Whittfield-1 An unabashed and unapologetic pastel artist with an obsessive nature toned in kitsch and pith; Whitfield creates a personal mythology within an art historical context.

Growing up the child of a politician and an educator in south Florida, Whitfield found himself at the age of 6 living in the master suite of a haunted Antebellum Mansion on an abandoned horse farm. The former owner, and now ghost, Norma, had succumbed to madness for the last ten years of her life. It was said she often walked to the end of the circular drive waving with undergarments fastened to the outside of her clothes. But it was inside the house that her madness truly reined, where she had stuffed her rooms with worthless discards. Whitfield’s family found the former master suite’s, pink and maroon tiled, bathroom, stuffed with lipsticks even filling the toilet bowl; permanently streaking it in the waxy reds his Mother and Father kept in memoriam...

Get Your Own Sleep Room

Get Your Own Sleep Room 06/14/2004 03:33 AM
Some people take sleep very seriously. Not getting enough sleep is much more dangerous than most people realize, but it's become more common in our society for people to be chronically sleep deprived. The problem is apparently quite an issue in Japan, where Matsushita has developed a $30,000 sleep room system designed to help ease you into and out of sleep. The system includes an automatically adjusting bed, a TV showing soothing images, a sound system playing relaxing sounds and (my personal favorite) a bed designed to massage you gently into sleep. The system can be used for a cat nap or a full night's sleep. Either way, it appears that folks in Japan are quite excited about this sort of research - as an associated picture with the article shows Japanese office workers taking their naps in the company's showroom that demonstrates a number of recliners.

Big Sleep for Bonzo

Big Sleep for Bonzo 06/08/2004 05:02 PM
BoingBoing pal Gareth Branwyn points us to some spectacular spleen-venting over the case of Alzheimer's that America appears to be having over Ronald Reagan's presidency. Tom Carson in the Village Voice. Sorry for the spoiler, but here's the final line: "The best that can be said for Ronald Reagan is that, if George W. Bush gets re-elected, we may yet end up missing him."
Ronald Reagan is the man who destroyed America's sense of reality -- a paltry target, all in all, given our predilections. It only took an actor: the real successor to John Wilkes Booth. In our bones, we had always been this sort of bullshit-craving country anyhow, founded on abstractions: not land (somebody else's), not people (Red Rover, Red Rover, send Emma Lazarus right over), not even shared history (nostalgia isn't the same thing, and try pulling that Civil War Shinola anywhere west of the Rio Grande). Just monumental words and wordy monuments, with two convenient oceans between them and circumstance; from Nat Turner's status as three-fifths of a man -- even though we ended up hanging all of him -- to Reagan's child Lynndie England (b. 1983, the year we invaded Grenada and lost 241 Marines in Lebanon), any shortfall could be blamed on something lost in translation. But it was Reagan, whose most profound Freudian slip was the immortal "Facts are stupid things," who beguiled us into living in the theme park full-time, and so much for the Declaration of Independence's prattle about "a decent respect to the opinions of mankind" -- actually the only time we ever expressed much concern for those. Since his 1980 opponent, Jimmy Carter, was about the sorriest embodiment of the reality principle imaginable -- Three's Company's Mr. Roper on the world-historical stage -- facts didn't have a prayer.

LazyWeb, while you sleep

LazyWeb, while you sleep 04/10/2005 02:16 PM

I often have dreams that feature technology ideas, but I don't always remember them and more often than not they're just goofy ideas. This morning's dream is somewhat in the goofy category but might be useful to some, and since I remember all of it in detail I'll relate it here.

So I'm stopping by Andy's office in Santa Monica to go have lunch (I think I was on a roadtrip in my dream), and while he steps away to grab his jacket I notice there's an IM window scrolling past with loads of text. When he gets back a few seconds later I ask him what that is, and he says he's watching the Simpsons over IM.

I say "you're doing what? how?" and he explains it, and this is way more detail than I normally remember in dreams, but I thought it was such a cool idea I think I kind of "saved" it so I would remember later. So he goes on, explaining how he built a chatbot that is wired to a stream of TV closed captioning, so you add captionbot to your buddy list, then talk to it. You ask it what's on TV right now, and it returns a list of shows, you pick a show and it starts streaming out dialogue from characters, directly via closed caption data. "It's like watching a show in text" I say and then we go off to lunch.

And that's all I remember. Andy built a really cool text adventure bot last year, and TVeyes is basically Technorati for TV (though they predate Technorati by several years), searching caption histories for words or phrases. I doubt you can get real time caption data and I'm not even sure if reading a tv show would be interesting, but I figured I'd share the dream with everyone, in case someone feels like building it.
