Classifying blobs as faces

Classifying blobs as faces

Classifying blobs as faces 04/12/2004 11:33 AM

magritte MIT researchers report in the journal Science that the brain relies on context to compensate for images that are noisy or degraded. For example, if you look at a person from very far away, their face may look like a blurry blob with no discernible features at all. Still, thanks to the contextual cues (in this case, the attached body), you still can classify the blob as a face. That seems obvious, of course. What's novel about this work is that the researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging to actually show that "the specific brain region known to be activated by clear images of faces is also strongly activated by very blurred images, just so long as surrounding contextual cues are present." Of course, surrealist artists like Rene Magritte have known this for years. Link

JavaServer Faces helps streamline your web development through the use of UI components and events. JSF components (buttons, text boxes, etc.) live between user requests. faces from the Ark pen

faces from the Ark pen 12/22/2004 01:57 AM
Mirrors. Documentarian Bruce Jackson found "a group of about two hundred 3x4" identification photographs made between 1914 and 1937... in a drawer in the Arkansas penitentiary in the summer of 1975"; this (slideshow) is the online record of an exhibition.
It is impossible to look at these images and not think about the persons depicted there. But, save for one fact that is a given—and what we find in or infer from these images—we know nothing about those persons, and never will. The given is that they are all prisoners: for whatever reason, they have been deprived of liberty, the single piece of enduring proof of which is the image at which we presently gaze. The conclusions we draw, the feelings we have, the narratives we suppose—they are all our own. The images are mirrors, resonating with aspects of our selves we perhaps never before encountered.
Many of them are haunting; this one has been turned by time into a work of art. (Via Ramage.)

The grid of images UI is one of teh most effective ways of communicating LOTS of stuff - all at the same time. Videowall mentality permeates through this grid - and can be used effectively for a PeoplePlace, a set of Top Albums you're listening to or practially any sort of high-load scalability challenge one might have.

I usually don't pontificate about UI theory - but this screams out to be talked about. I used to blog allot a couple of years ago about Faces. Well now I'm gonna start blogging allot about FaceWalls. Everyone should use these image grids - for new kinds of micro-content!

It's a wonderful, scalable interface metaphor.

LastFM.jpg

last.FM uses the image grid effectively to let folks know what albums you're listening to. This coolio scalable interface approach works subliminally - regardless of what language you speak or what cult you adhere to.

Eventually we'll have loads of open source templates to let folks roll over a thumbnail image and have it zoom up to reveal details of what that information is - and as fast as you can move your mouse, you're onto the next thumbnail image.

This is what I mean by "letting Apple do our R&D for us." We all have seen the Mac OS X icon dock zoom up and down - now we ALL can use that lick for our 'FaceWall' browsing.

Faces of London

Faces of London 02/05/2005 10:18 PM

Without intending to, I ended up taking photos of a bunch of faces while I was in London. Here are some of them:

It's been awhile since I've seriously picked up a camera (not that I was ever that serious about it) and I'm a little rusty. I'm hoping to get in lots more practice in the coming months, so the quality should hopefully improve.

Face blind: Imagine living in a world in which you are surrounded by blank faces. You see people all around you, but you can't recognize them by their faces, only by context, clothing, and hair. You don't recognize your neighbors when you see them in the grocery store, and you couldn't pick your co-workers' faces out of a line-up. You have to learn speci al coping methods to get through your daily social activities. This is what it is like to have prosopagnosia, or face blindness.

This month, in The Atlantic Monthly, Talking Points Memo's Joshua Micah Marshall writes an interesting article discussing the potential aspects of Kerry's foreign policy. Part One is here, with Parts Two and Three to be released later this week. Biden speaks about foreign policy in an overbearing, yet refreshingly intelligent, articulate, analytical manner.

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows 12/22/2004 01:13 AM

Microsoft Windows have a philosophy, it seems, to offer one thousand and one UI choices to do any single thing. This may not be the best UI implementation, but, hey, it's interesting that Apple's iTunes is taking this philosphy to heart.

On the Mac, you can show iTunes as a full-fledge window, as a mini-window, or hide the iTunes window.

On Windows, here's what you can do...

1) Display as a full-fledge window, just like the Macintosh version.

2) Display as a mini-window, just like the Macintosh version.

3) Minimize the window, so that it appears as a button on your task bar.

4) Also show the iTunes icon on the system tray, so that you can right-click on it to access common iTunes menu items. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and select "Show iTunes icon in system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)

5) Show the iTunes icon on the system tray, but don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and select both "Show iTunes icon in the system tray" and "Minimize iTunes window to system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)

6) Don't show the iTunes icon on the system tray and don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. Instead, show a mini-mini player on the task bar itself. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and unselect "Show iTunes icon in the system tray." Right click on an empty area of your task bar, select the "Toolbars" sub-menu, and then select the "iTunes" menu item. Now, minimize the iTunes window.)

Celebrity faces as used-gum targets 05/17/2004 06:11 AM
Gum-posters featuring celebrity faces are appearing in London, and locals are encouraged to dispose of their wads by sticking them up, rather than dropping them underfoot.
Londoners are being urged to stick their chewing gum on celebrity posters rather than dropping it on the streets.

Ealing Council hopes posters featuring Shane Richie, Jordan and Peter Andre among others will prove a more tempting target in Acton, west London.

Posters have removable sheets which will be changed six days a week to stop the gum building up...

It is estimated that UK local authorities spend £150m a year tackling the problem.
