Man Angry At Mobile Phone Service,

Man Angry At Mobile Phone Service,
Starts Throwing Phones
05/14/2004 03:14 PM
These days, with things like number portability around, if you don't really like your mobile phone provider, you can simply change providers. Apparently, that wasn't what a man in North Dakota wanted, though. He went to the local Verizon Wireless store, pissed off about something, and when yelling at employees (his original intention) didn't satisfy him, he started to fling mobile phones around the store causing $2,000 worth of damages and injuring (not badly) an employee. Of course, you have to wonder about his claim that he only intended to yell at employees. Before he started his fling fest he apparently took off his shirt (?!?) and put on safety goggles. Amusingly, this was done at a Verizon Wireless store - and Verizon Wireless tends to get some of the best marks for customer service.

EasyMobile: a mobile phone company
without phones or towers
08/11/2004 09:48 AM
The EasyGroup (who provide the discount EasyJet airline and the cheap EasyInternet cafes) have launched a mobile phone company called, what else, EasyMobile. EasyMobile -- which leases capacity on other carriers' networks -- won't give away free phones with their plans; instead, they'll just sell you a SIM card and rely on you to find a phone somewhere. Given that most mobile phone carriers give you a new phone annually if you threaten to quit, a lot of Easy's ptoential customers have a wealth of easily unlockable phones kicking around, ready to be used with an Easy SIM. And since Easy isn't giving away phones, it can roll those savings back into cheaper airtime and services.
EasyMobile is to be launched in December at the latest on the British market and if all goes well the service will be expanded to the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain.

Spray AUV Starts Gulf Stream Round Trip

Spray AUV Starts Gulf Stream Round Trip 03/25/2005 02:51 PM
According to a WHOI Oceanus article, the Spray UAV started a seven week round trip from Bermuda across the Gulf Stream and back yesterday. The 6 foot long underwater robot completed it's first one-way Gulf Stream trip under remote control in September of 2004. To dive, Spray uses a hydraulic pump to move mineral oil between two bladders, changing the robots volume much like the swim bladder in a fish. Research hope to someday have fleets of similar autonomous gliders sailing the worlds oceans to collect physical and chemical data. For more on Spray, see the WHOI Spray FAQ and the Scripps Spray home page.

Let Them Eat Mobile Phones

Let Them Eat Mobile Phones 09/22/2004 09:15 PM
Reuters is reporting that African leaders want to buy a bunch of mobile phones because "there are more telephones in Manhattan than in all Africa." Apparently, if you just add mobile phones to a bunch of poor countries, all else will be solved. I've taken a deeper look at this story over at TheFeature, where I compare the situation to the famous "cargo cults" of the South Pacific in World War II, where a confusion over the big picture (and cause and effect) led groups of people to think they could solve all their problems by mimicking the basic actions of others, but not getting to the root causes of the situation. I do think that technology can be a huge help to developing nations, but ad hoc solutions to "just add technology X" are never going to help unless the real issues are addressed first.
