contracted syphilis. Do you try to call in sick? Or do you push
yourself to get into your office at the World Trade Center's North

"If this was Jane Austen or Charles Dickens, there would be a
national outcry". Thousands of
perso
nal papers belonging to
Sherlock Holmes creator
a>, Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle,
fetched $1.7 million at an auction Wednesday,
with many items sold to private U.S. collectors. The auction was
a great disappointment to scholars who had hoped the
papers would be donated to a public
institution. The archive also became entwined in a
mystery worthy of Conan Doyle's fictional detective:
the bizarre death of a
lead
ing Holmes scholar. Lancelyn Green, 50, was found dead in his bed
on March 27,
garroted with a shoelace tightened by a
wooden spoon, and surrounded by stuffed toys.

03/06/2004 01:57 AM

In a pair of
recent
essays<
/a>, Eric Raymond tears into the open source community -- rightly so
-- for its failure to deliver software that Aunt Tillie can use. He's
spot on. One of his comments got me wondering, though:
If the designers were half-smart about UI issues (like, say, Windows
programmers) they'd probe the local network neighborhood and omit the
impossible entries. If they were really smart (like, say, Mac
programmers) they'd leave the impossible choices in but gray them out,
signifying that if your system were configured a bit differently you
really could print on a Windows machine, assuming you were unfortunate
enough to own one. [Eric
Raymond: An Open-Source Horror Story]
As it happens, I'd never tried printing to a Windows XP queue on my
home network from my Mac, and I wondered how well those Mac
programmers Eric talks about handled that case. So here, for your
Flash viewing pleasure, is Aunt
Tillie's OS X Adventure.

03/06/2004 01:56 AMXO Play have released a little text-based game for the iPod, called
The Rise of the Lost. The game is
essentially an electronic version of one of those
Fighting Fantasy-type
adventure novels from years gone by (my personal favourite was
Forest of Doom
by Ian Livingstone).
The game is ‘played’ through linked files via the Notes feature
(available on 3G iPods). It may not be a match for
Super
Monkey Ball Jr on the GBA, but it sounds kinda fun in an old skool
way.

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router,
Notebook Adapter, $20 Gift Certificate
for $88
08/04/2004 01:31 PM
Okay, this on is a little
hard to follow, but it's worth it, so stick with me. Amazon has the
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G router (the one that runs Linux that you can
flash with the magic firmware to make it do all sorts of interesting
tricks) bundled with a Wireless-G notebook card for $108 (there's a
"Better Together" link on the product page). If you buy both, you can
use the $10 rebate on both to save $20, then go on to qualify for a
$20 gift certificate on future Amazon shopping.
So basically you're getting a really nice, tinker-ready Wi-Fi
router for $68 with free shipping. Not a bad deal at all, but if you
still aren't seeing why this is a good deal, you probably wouldn't
want one in the first place.

Top Tip: Linux login authentication?
Top Tip: Linux login authentication?
08/09/2004 11:17 AMHow does Linux handle the Windows equivalent of domain logins? I'm
looking into using Linux in the computer lab of a small school which
has approximately 20 computers. I'm familiar with Windows domains and
its logon security, but am not sure how it works in the Linux world?
Are there domain controllers? How is logon authentication handled?

USB Key Replaces Gateway Login
06/08/2004 12:31 PMPronto Networks introduces USB key to allow secure login without
passwords: Pronto's Internet Key lets a user plug in this small device
into a USB port to authenticate themselves over a Pronto-based
network. The release doesn't mention what software is required to use
the system, which was co-developed with Sweet Spot Solutions. While
this is an idea that's been churning for a while--Microsoft is working
on something of this sort, for instance--it's problematic when it's a
single-vendor solution. Think about the grocery store affinity
programs: how many cards do you have to carry to get the best price if
a single store isn't convenient to you? My mother-in-law has a dangly
array of those, which are capable of being managed, but not ideal. So,
too, would a USB-based authentication system quickly get out of hand
if you needed to carry a separate key for each system you might use.
The best solution will be something akin to a SIM card as used in GSM
phones, which has already been successfully tested as a method of
secure authentication across a Wi-Fi network to a back-end cellular
accounting system. Instead of a single key for each system, carry a
USB key with either biometric (fingerprint) or password-based strong
encrypted for mounting that contains a variety of certificates for use
with an 802.1X EAP-TLS system. Even better, embed Secure ID into the
USB key so that its ever-changing number is visible. This would
provide yet another level of security: stealing the certificate and
the username/password doesn't gain access without the Secure ID
number. These kinds of authentication systems don't need to be
baroque, and different networks might require different levels of
security. But there should be checks and balances so that the theft of
a string of data (like a certificate) or a piece of hardware (like a
USB key) doesn't jeopardize the integrity of network....
