Streaming
audio/video from a web server: A couple of years ago, I spent
hours tracking down the information that's on this page. I wish I had
found it back then. Very handy.
Streaming can be initiated with the help of redirector files.
Linking to the redirector file will cause the associated player
software to start on the client computer (if it's properly set up),
and playback will start almost immediately (after buffering a small
amount of data). Note that the player software will only start if a
user has selected to play the media, this is a big advantage compared
to embedded media.

I have yet to enter Proto Merkabah. I was going to sit down and
play Xenosaga, but I was dealing with a crash in the new CSS parser
caused by some of you Web freaks using :not (a CSS3 selector supported
by Mozilla). The syntax of this selector is such that it isn't
compatible with the CSS2.1 grammar, so I added rules to recognize
:not.
Once I did that I realized I was about 10 lines away from
implementing :not. Ok, so 12 lines later (yes, it did turn out to be
a little bigger than I thought, turns out :not can't nest for no
apparent reason I can discern), :not came into being in Safari.
So of course then I had to test :not, which meant I had to go load
the CSS3 test suite. As I started flipping through pages I found all
sorts of bugs with some of the selectors like the ~= selector, and
then I stumbled on all these brainlessly easy selectors that Safari
just didn't support.
Well, that just pissed me off, so I went and implemented :empty,
:root and ::selection. Yes, I am just that random. Maybe I'll do
some of the other CSS3 selectors if I have time.
Anyway, back to Xenosaga. I've played enough poker at the casino
to afford the 300,000 GP AWGS, and I got Shion's super Ether attack
that involves the summoning of a giant robot called Erde Kaiser. I
think he's supposed to be intimidating and just generally badass, but
I think he looks like a giant Transformer.
Add to that the fact that he's brightly colored and seems to be
built out of Lego blocks, and you just really don't have a recipe for
intimidation.
The game still rocks though. :)

Stream Anything to an AirPort
Express Using Airfoil -- Rogue Amoeba has released the first
version of Airfoil, a program that can take the audio output of any
program under Mac OS X and stream it using AirTunes to an AirPort
Express's audio output jack. It's a simple piece of software that will
delight all AirPort Express owners who want to stream audio from
applications such as QuickTime Player, RealPlayer, or Windows Media
Player. However, due to latency between Airfoil and the AirPort
Express, audio and video will not be synchronized, such as when
playing a DVD and sending the audio to a home stereo; Rogue Amoeba has
posted a possible workaround that's worth trying. There's no guarantee
that Apple might not step in and update their AirTunes software to
disable Airfoil, but it doesn't seem to fall into the category of
things that Apple believes is detrimental to their products,
contracts, or partners. The software costs $25, but Rogue Amoeba is
offering it at an introductory offer of $20 through 31-Mar-05.

CNET: RealNetworks breaks Apple's hold on iPod.
RealNetworks announced Monday that it has unlocked some of Apple
Computer's most tightly held technology secrets, giving its music a
way onto the popular iPod digital music player.
There's good news in this announcement, namely the fact
that Real is forcing a tiny bit more openness on Apple, which has been
trying for a winner-take-all approach to digital music. More choice,
and less lock-in, by these companies is always a good idea.
But Real is no prize when it comes to locking customers into another
box: the one the music industry has created with its insistence on
absolute control over digital music. Real's approach to selling songs
is not that at all: It says you're only renting them. At least Apple
says you (mostly) own what you're buying.
Nonetheless, this is progress of a sort.
Google hacks are for real
Google hacks are for real08/06/2004 09:40 AM Google hacks are for real, regardless of what some uber-hackers may
think or say. They can produce passwords, user IDs, credit card
numbers, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers and routing
codes, and more. They can also be used to troll for vulnerabilities.
One quick example: using one of the simplest Google advanced operators
in combination with another operator, I quickly found a number of
Microsoft IIS 6.0 Authentication Manager pages exposed to the Internet
on Army, Navy, state, and federal agency sites. In fact, finding the
sites proved to be much easier than alerting them to the
vulnerability.

Mac OS X Panther Hacks
Mac OS X Panther Hacks08/11/2004 06:15 AM
I finally got round to reading my copy of the wonderful O'Reilly Mac
OS X Panther Hacks book, which, like all of the hacks books, is
clever, informative, well-organised and useful; this one has the
additional merit of having been co-written by my pal Rael Dornfest, who edits the line, and
is witty, silly and very imaginative indeed. The hacks assembled in
the text range from surprising things you can do with iTunes and iCal
to hacking AppleScript to making OS X cooperate with perl and Python,
but my favorite of all is the iOscillate: an iSight camera mounted to
the top of a de-bladed oscillating desk-fan, so that the fan sweeps
the iSight back and forth in a steady, 180-degree arc, covering all
those seated around a table or in a conference. The hack is truly
worthy of the appellation "hack" -- it's ingenious, funny, and
actually useful in a seriously bent way.
