Treatments for Menopause May Be Overused
(AP)
03/23/2005 07:50 PM
AP - American women may be overusing treatments for symptoms of menopause, including hormone therapies that can pose a risk, a National Institutes of Health consensus panel said Wednesday. "For women who don't have very serious symptoms, waiting it out may be the best strategy," said Dr. Carol M. Mangione of the University of California, Los Angeles.

Look Under the WPA Label

Look Under the WPA Label 07/02/2004 12:54 PM
PC World investigates whether WPA labeling matches WPA certification: Sean Captain discovers that even when a product says it has WPA, you might need to check twice. Microsoft's now-discounted 802.11g router said on the box that it had WPA certification, but that's not the case. The device slipped in under the wire for Wi-Fi certification requiring WPA late last year, and the upgrade for WPA isn't due until this month. The Wi-Fi Alliance's database of certification had the correct details, however. Captain warns that if you need WPA, make sure the device has it: just being 802.11g isn't enough....

The Ringtone Label?

The Ringtone Label? 12/24/2004 12:18 PM
With the rise of ringtones, it seems that some have really taken the idea and tried to run with it. So far, certainly, ringtones have done well for some companies, but it's still not clear if it's a sustainable market, or a faddish one. There's also the fact that the industry continues to deny that file sharing of ringtones could ever be a risk -- which suggests they're only asking for serious trouble down the road. Still, the latest move is that one company has set up a record label just for ringtones. Because, already, musicians have separate labels for CDs and videos and digital downloads and... wait a second... no they don't. Most musicians basically sign deals with a single recording label to handle all of their musical endeavors, so it seems sort of strange to have an entirely separate label for ringtones only. For recording labels that don't already include this in their standard contracts, they will soon -- and then this new "label" will be out of luck. Of course, the reality is that it's just a way for this company to get a little extra publicity for these "unique" ringtones. Considering that part of the reason ringtones are so popular, though, is that people recognize the songs they represent, it makes you wonder if people really are that interested in songs that are designed just to be ringtones. Seems sort of like a niche market within a niche market.

Label Your Power Supplies

Label Your Power Supplies 06/11/2004 12:56 PM

If I can be so bold, here's a tip for my fellow geeks to make your life easier: label your power supplies.

When you get a new toy that comes with a power cable that has a converter in (either in the middle or built into the plug) slap a label on it explaining exactly which one of your hundreds of devices this works with.

I have a "workshop" in my office. It's sort of a server room, sort of a place where all my geek crap can accumulate. I inherited a box of about 100 different power cables, convertors, and supplies. I can only tell you what about a third of them are actually for.

Last month, some of the guys wanted to stick bunch of laptops in the conference room. Ignoring the wireless connection (and me, since it was late at night), they rummaged around the workshop, found a hub, and rummaged some more until they found a power supply with an end that would fit. Too bad it supplied twice the voltage that the hub needed — some sparks and noxious fumes later, I can scratch one hub.

I can't tell you the number of times I've had to dig through a pile of cables for 30 minutes to try and match up amps and volts between a device and a power supply. Now, whenever something new comes in the mail, the first thing I do is slap a label on the supply or the cable. It'll make you life easier, trust me.

Brother PT-65 Label Maker

Brother PT-65 Label Maker 06/05/2005 11:21 PM
For a while now, I've been looking to get an inexpensive label maker. My goal was to label the many bits of equipment that go along with my glider. By having my name and aircraft or contest number on my stuff, there's less chance that it'll walk off or get lost. After a few days of hunting around on-line and reading reviews, I decided on the Brother PT-65. I'm quite happy with this unit. It's small, quiet, has an...
