DefenseTech's Noah Shachtman has a short write-up about this cute little device that wraps up half-a-century's worth of science-fiction ideas into one floating red jet-powered sphere. Called the 'Personal Satellite Assistant,' the goal of the program is to provide an intelligent assistant to the astronauts who need both hands free to perform experiments (by the way, still haven't seen the results of those sex in space tests, NASA) and to monitor conditions about the space craft and warn if anything goes awry. It even can move around by blasting jets of air -- plenty of power to bop around in weightlessness. There's no promise the PSA will ever hit the deep blacks skies, but if we can't have zero-G orgy videos, the least NASA could do is let our space stations have pets.

Vodafone has met the call of the XDA IIs with a Windows Mobile smartphone of their own, called the Vodafone Personal Assistant III, or VPA III. And the best bit of news? It's a quad-band, so it should be a mail-order lover candidate if you find its built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SDIO slot, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and VGA camera appealing. If those specs sound at all familiar, it's probably because they are almost the same as the XDA IIs and the T-Mobile MDA III, as well. In fact, I'm pretty much losing all ability to discern one of these things from another, which will probably become even more obvious when someone tells me what other Pocket PC phone this VPA III should be reminding me of. (Probably the MDA III; the keyboards are almost identical.) (Thanks, Robert!)

QA Assistant is a Gnome-Python application that assists a reviewer in performing quality assurance. It displays a checklist that the reviewer fills in. When the checklist is filled, the application outputs a review to a file for the reviewer to submit. In addition to the GUI interface, the application features an XML checklist definition for extensibility, the ability to add custom checklist items to a review, and an informational tips interface to aid in filling out the review.

So I thought we'd give it a little time to settle down, what with all the cries of fraud abounding, but as far as I can tell, the Jackito PDA (excuse me, TDA, as in Tactile Digital Assistant) appears to be real. With claims like "7 processors and reversible FPGA," not to mention the complete lack of a proper input device -- it's two thumbs or nothing, according to their site -- even if it makes it out of the vapor doesn't mean anyone will actually want one, especially not for $600 - $800.

Maria is an assistant teacher in Statistical Interference at the University of Auckland according to a new press release from the University. It also describes some of the unique attributes of Maria. First of all, it claims she's a virtual, artificial intelligence entity "with a vocabulary of 203,000 words, a repertoire of 106,000 grammatical rules and 118,000 rules of logical interference, Maria is capable of conversation at quite a complex level." Whe she's not teaching, Maria apparently hangs out on the Internet with her other virtual friends phishing for credit card numbers. Feel free to visit them and have a chat. ComputerWorld's FutureWatch profiles Carnegie Mellon's Radar project (Reflective Agent with Distributed Adaptive Reasoning) which aims to build a computer-based administrative assistance that can intelligently guess what tasks need to be performed to help you in your daily routine.

For instance, suppose a manager receives an e-mail from a colleague requesting some slides. Fahlman and his team are trying to optimize the Radar system to understand the request at a basic level, draft a response and notify the manager with a message like, "Here's my proposed answer; do you accept this?" and then await the manager's response.

Radar isn't intended to act just as an e-mail filtering system, Fahlman says. As a text-in, text-out system, there's "a huge opportunity" for one Radar system to "talk" with another Radar system, schedule meetings and draw information from or post it to a company's Web site, he explains.
