Chinese Demand Incompatible, Unsupported
Security Standard
12/02/2003 10:24 PM
In a development that appears from left field, the Chinese government has banned equipment that doesn't conform to WAPI: Never heard of WAPI (Wired Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure)? You're not alone. Neither the IEEE nor the Wi-Fi Alliance has information about it, either, except that it doesn't include Advanced Encryption System (AES) support. The Chinese government's standards agency developed WAPI, and equipment cannot be imported or manufactured for domestic use in China after Dec. 1 without WAPI in it. Perhaps WAPI has a backdoor for government or is the brainchild of a domestic firm? Unknown yet. Intel and others expect to skirt the requirement until at least June, because devices manufactured in the country or imported before Dec. 1 or are part of contracts for delivery that don't support WAPI are still acceptable to sell and use....

What to do before installing Panther

What to do before installing Panther 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
With Panther's launch date coming quickly (this Friday!), I thought it was a good time to remind you what to do before making a major OS update. It's a scary time for a lot of people, especially switchers who may never have done something of this scale to their Mac before. but, the grass is green on the other side--Panther really kicks.

Installing psycopg on Red Hat 9

Installing psycopg on Red Hat 9 12/31/2003 12:20 AM

Adrian Holovaty and I spent some time today figuring out how to get the psycopg Postgres module to install on Red Hat 9. It took a while, but eventually we tweaked the spec file and used it to compile our own RPM. I've posted our modified spec file to the psycopg mailing list. More for my own record than anything else, the arcane incantations needed to create the RPM went roughly as follows:

  1. Copy the modified psycopg.spec file in to /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/
  2. Copy psycopg-1.1.11.tar.gz in to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
  3. In the SPECS directory, run rpmbuild -ba psycopg.spec
  4. Install the resulting RPM, which materialised in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS

The above was recreated by digging through my bash history - hopefully I haven't missed a step. The technique appears to work for Fedora as well.

AOL Installing More Spyware/Adware

AOL Installing More Spyware/Adware 04/09/2004 05:29 PM
It seems that the latest strategic thinking from the folks at AOL is that, now that people are leaving the paid for service in droves, they might as well do everything possible to drive people away from their free offerings as well. How else can you explain their decision to install additional spyware/adware with the latest version of the AIM instant messenger product? As Broadband Reports points out, they apparently didn't learn anything from Real Networks latest problems. If they keep this up they'll (just like so many others) drive people to Microsoft and Yahoo (and Google, once they add their own Gimmle, or whatever Google's eventual instant messenger product will be called). The response, of course, is that AOL needs to make money somehow, and while that's true, that doesn't mean the way to make money is to piss off your user base. I'm not sure what gets into people's heads that they believe the only way for advertising to work is to piss off people. In a competitive market, that's just like handing your users over to your competitor.

Apple Chipset Bombshell: Super
Multimedia Chip Licensed for Unknown

Apple Chipset Bombshell: Super
Multimedia Chip Licensed for Unknown
Device
04/06/2005 11:31 AM

gpod.jpgPrepare for speculation a-go-go: Apple just licensed a chipset that is capable of not only music and video, but 3D graphics and image capturing with resolutions up to 8-megapixel. Silicon Valley Watcher is reporting that Apple has contracted to use a chipset from UK company Alphamosaic. And not only is the chipset powerful, it can be integrated with chips from Alphamosaic's parent company Broadcom to provide wireless communication, from cell phones to Bluetooth to Wi-Fi.

Now as much fun as it is to wonder if Apple is making a video/gaming/cellphone/camera/music device, you also have to realize that Apple often doesn't exploit the full power of the chipsets it licenses (the chipset that powers modern iPods is capable of video, for instance). So while Apple could be designing the ultimate convergence device (or Newton II), they could also just be adding video or 3D menus to the new generation of iPod. What we do know is we won't see a product using this hardware until at least next year, so we've got lots of time to wonder.

Who knew that the April Fool's gPod hoax [pictured] would be so quickly probable?

Scoop! Brit chip designers score coup as Apple picks chips for next gen mobile multimedia device...the m-Pod? [SiliconValleyWatcher]

EU: A limit recognized?

EU: A limit recognized? 07/27/2004 09:36 AM
Stefan Bechtold writes that the EU Commission (ok, a staff report) has decided that copyright terms for recordings in Europe should not be increased beyond the current term (50 years after publication), despite the growing pressure of recording labels to increase the term to "save" (as they put it) some of the most important Rock from entering the public domain. The story is getting press in Europe. (Independent, BBC< /a>). This is an extremely important development in this battle. For once, a government-related entity has recognized the truth (or at least, not had its recognition crushed). I've already been talking to archives that are working on the idea of releasing all the recordings they can when they pass into the public domain on January 1, as a way of demonstrating the value of a wide range of work becoming available, unencumbered, for widespread use. Here in the U.S., we'll be able to celebrate the same in, um, 2019. Till then, for your listening pleasure, an oldie (first posted here last July): a 1937 radio program from the Columbia Workshop about creative works passing from the "copyright lane" into the "public domain".
