The Axis of Just as Evil

The Axis of Just as Evil

The Axis of Just as Evil 03/13/2003 10:25 AM

This made me laugh out loud. It's allegedly written by John Cleese, but it turns out that it originally came from Satirewire. "Bitter after being snubbed for membership in the "Axis of Evil," Libya, China, and Syria today announced they had formed the "Axis of Just as Evil," which they said would be more evil than that stupid Iran-Iraq-North Korea axis President Bush warned of in his State of the Union address. Axis of Evil members, however, immediately dismissed the new axis as having, for starters, a really dumb name. "Right. They are Just as Evil...in their dreams!" declared North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. "Everybody knows we're the best evils... best at being evil...we're the best."

The European version of the "axis
of evil"
11/06/2003 08:47 AM
According to this news report, the Europeans have their own version of the "axis of evil." In a poll, European citizens list what they consider are the biggest threats to world peace. Top the list is Israel, followed by the United States, North Korea and Iran jointly in the second place. Other states (including some without statehood right now) behind in the list are Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, China, India, Russia and Somalia. Israel expresses outrage at this poll and the European governments are trying to play down its significance. But a poll is a poll, and how can Israel object to democratic expressions of the people of Europe?

Harnessing Evil for the power of...

06/05/2005 11:55 PM
There are days I think the $WORK_PROJECT is an exercise in extended programming irony. The parrot code my compiler generates for $WORK_LANGUAGE makes heavy use of continuations. Really heavy use of continuations, to the point where reports are taking (and discarding) three continuations per record plus another two or three per page of the output. For a language which doesn't have functions, blocks, or lexical variables, and whose idea of sophisticated control flow is goto or gosub to bare labels. Go figure....

Axis API via WSDL 12/18/2003 04:51 PM
I've written a small C# app to use the WSDL that Randy has been writing/coordinating.  A few small changes to the WSDL were required to get this to a clean compile (try compiling the app with the original WSDL to see what was needed, then try this one).  On top of that, a bit more changes were required to get it to produce a recognizable request.  The latter changes are the subject of this blog entry. ...

america's heart and soul - so, they wouldn't release fahrenheit 9/11, but this, this is okay. are they making efforts to distance themselves from any involvement with fh9/11, or do they want to make sure that washington keeps listening?

From the chronicle:
Disney officials insist their 88-minute film, "America's Heart and Soul" -- stitching simple, positive vignettes of everyday Americans with sweeping vistas and up-tempo music -- is neither a response to Moore's politically charged hit nor any type of political statement itself.

OKI Claims Smallest 3-Axis Accelerometer 08/27/2004 01:37 PM
OKI has announced the development of the ML8950 tri-axis accelerometer, a 5mm square by 1.4mm thick surface-mount chip that can measure acceleration, inclination angle, impact shocks, and vibration on the X, Y, and Z axis. The chip has built-in amplifiers and A/D converters, resulting in a serial digital output signal that can be connected directly to a CPU. The chip will be very low cost and is designed for use in cell phones and other mobile devices for applications such as camera-phone vibration compensation systems. Samples will be available begining in October. No data sheet on the device is available yet but some specifications can be found on the Japanese language press release. This sensor could lower the cost of robots that rely on an IMU for dynamic balancing.

Google To Start Selling Banner Adverts From the that-didn't-take-too-long-department, Google's ad sales VP Tim Armstrong says Google will now start selling graphical banner adverts. However... "We have no plans to show images on Google.com", said Mr. Armstrong "but we are not opposed to it".

IRC is Evil

IRC is Evil 05/06/2004 12:00 AM

Oh That Evil IRC

Oh That Evil IRC 05/06/2004 02:53 AM
Admittedly, I haven't used IRC in about a decade, but I'm still a bit surprised to see the NY Times write up a whole article describing just how evil IRC is. After reading the article, you can almost count down the days before some politicians talk about investigating this "IRC thing." Is it my imagination or is IRC just a technology that can be used for chatting? Most of the article talks about all the terrible stuff that is done on IRC in a way that does its best to blame the technology. They practically apologize for the few times they try to mention non-evil things that IRC is used for, as if they can't believe that anyone would dare defend such an evil monstrosity.

The New York Times has an article about how evil IRC is.

Still, I.R.C. perhaps most closely resembles the cantina scene in "Star Wars'': a louche hangout of digital smugglers, pirates, curiosity seekers and the people who love them (or hunt them). There seem to be I.R.C. channels dedicated to every sexual fetish, and I.R.C. users speculate that terrorists also use the networks to communicate in relative obscurity.
