cgi-bin/press.cgi?story=1427The Digital Catalogue of
Illuminated Manuscripts (DigCIM) is developing the first-ever
digitally illustrated and searchable catalog of Western illuminated
medieval and Renaissance manuscripts held in the British Library's
collections. It's funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Board
through a £300,000 grant to the Institute of English Studies at the
University of London, in partnership with the British Library. (A
pilot project was previously conducted by The British Library with
Getty support.) The books being cataloged include items such as the
8th century Lindisfarne Gospels and the 15th century Sforza Hours made
in Milan. Each manuscript will have an electronic description and will
be illustrated by a selection of captioned images. The site includes
thematic tours, some in the form of virtual exhibitions.

Hail Umbrella
Hail Umbrella
02/10/2004 02:49 AMNissan is deploying a device they believe will protect the car lots
at their plants from being damaged by hail. The sonic
cannon sends sound waves 50,000 feet into the air in an attempt to
keep hailstones from forming.
It automatically activates when its own weather radar
system detects conditions favorable for the formation of hail. It
fires every 5.5 seconds, making a sound we know can be heard at least
five miles away from the Nissan plant near Canton.
If they'd only develop the same sort of thing to deter tornadoes
I'd feel much safer living here in South Dakota.
Thanks Leo.

STORMWATCH!!!11 here in
Los Angeles, which is perfect because today was the first day in ages
when I actually had to drive down into Hollywood during rush hour.
All those jokes about how bad people drive when it rains in LA?
They're funny because they're true. I'd just like to take a moment,
and give "The Finger" to the entire city.
. . .
Okay. I feel much better. Thank you. :)

« A soggy Helsinki Day on a Finnish tall ship. »
Helsinki will be empty by evening as people flee to their summer
cottages to eat, drink and dance around the Juhannus bonfires. The
forecast calls for rain through Sunday so it's sure to be a bit soggy
and chilly....just like last year. It is supposedly summer, but I
prefer to call it the 'not-winter' season since this weather is what
we get in March back home. :) But, at least it's not snowing and
what's not to love about white nights, cold beer and grilled sausages
with friends even if a bit moist? I'm looking forward to getting out
of the city and not doing Finnish homework for a week or so. Happy
Juhannus to all. :)

Umbrella is a security mechanism that implements a
combination of Process-Based Access Control (PBAC)
and authentication of binaries through Digital
Signed Binaries (DSB). The scheme is designed for
Linux-based consumer electronic devices ranging
from mobile phones to set-top boxes. Umbrella is
implemented on top of the Linux Security Modules
(LSM) framework. The PBAC scheme is enforced by a
set of restrictions on each process. This policy
is distributed with a binary in form of execute
restrictions and within the program via a
"restricted fork" feature.
Changes:
Complete integration with GNU Privacy Guard to
authenticate binaries was implemented. Use of hash
tables for storing restrictions has been replaced
by the FSR data structure, which mimics the
"dentry" structs in the kernel. The Umbrella
system call was eliminated and completely replaced
by a /proc filesystem interface. The Umbrella code
is now completely independent of all architectures
and kernel subversions.
Bluetooth Umbrella Networks
Bluetooth Umbrella Networks
08/12/2004 09:20 AM
A team called "Umbrella.net" (no relation to Umbrella
Corp, we hope) has developed a prototype system of Bluetooth umbrellas
that facilitate "sudden, striking, and unexpected connections between
people in public and urban space" by forming ad-hoc mesh networks when
unfurled. As each umbrella is opened and added to the network, it
lights as it comes online. Unfortunately, since there's not a whole
lot to do when creating ad-hoc networks that aren't connected to the
internet, the primary application of the short range networking system
is chat.
Short-range, wireless chat. Now if only we could evolve vibrating,
fleshy cords in our throats and a set of communicative phonemes, maybe
we could run the chat system entirely with bio-generated power over a
sonic carrier.
