The Windows Hillside

The Windows Hillside

The Windows Hillside 04/12/2004 09:59 AM

I paved a Windows machine last night, and reloaded Windows XP Home from scratch. That being the case, I spent a lot of time looking at the default Windows desktop background. You know, the grassy hill picture. The file is called "Bliss."

Does anyone know where this hillside is? Do you think it's a real picture or is it some Photoshop concoction? There's a mountain range off to the right side of the picture in the background. I wonder if someone could use this to figure its location out.

I threw a couple of Google searches at the question, but came up empty. Anyone else want to give it a shot?

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. Deploying Windows Firewall Settings for
Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2
(v 2)
05/07/2004 01:56 AM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), currently a Release Candidate in Beta testing, includes significant enhancements to the Windows Firewall component, previously known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). Windows Firewall is a stateful host-based firewall that discards unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level of protection for computers against malicious users or programs. To provide better protection for computers connected to any kind of network (such as the Internet, a home network, or an organization network), Windows XP SP2 enables Windows Firewall on all network connections by default. This new behavior can impair some types of communications. This article describes how to deploy the appropriate configuration settings for Windows Firewall on an organization network so that it is enabled and providing protection, and so that communications are not impaired.

Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of
Windows XP SP2 to a PC Through Automatic
Updates and Windows
08/11/2004 01:18 AM
While recognizing the security benefits of Windows XP SP2, some organizations have requested the ability to temporarily disable delivery of this update via Automatic Updates (AU) and Windows Update (WU). These organizations have populations of PCs, upon which they have enabled AU. This is done to ensure that these PCs receive all critical security updates. Since SP2 will start to be delivered to PCs running Windows XP or Windows XP with SP1 via AU starting on August 16, these customers would like to temporarily block the delivery of SP2 in order to provide additional time for validation and testing of the update. In response to these requests, Microsoft is providing this set of tools. Please note that the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of Windows XP SP2 will be available for a period of 120 days (4 months) from August 16. At the end of this period, Windows XP SP2 will be delivered to all Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 systems.

The touch part works through windows, I mean, not just the light; that wouldn't be that impressive. Beyond that, it's pretty much just a regular screen, but it could be an interesting way to show off some of your products and answer simple questions even after the lights have been dimmed for the evening. For the £2,000 purchase price Data Vision will even install it for you, which is nice of them.

Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.

Windows desktop search tools 04/04/2005 11:04 PM

Search is all the rage these days. Especially desktop search. While both Microsoft and Apple have promised robust search functionality for upcoming versions of their respective operating systems, the search void has recently been filled by a handful of competing applications. In fact, the apps from Google and Yahoo have just recently exited beta status.

In this review, we look at five of the main desktop search utilities for Windows in an attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff. How well do they index your hard drive? What file types do they support? Which one has the best interface? We stack 'em up side-by-side. Take a look and see whose search cuisine reigns supreme.

Novell Says Its Next Linux Desktop Will
Surpass Windows
03/22/2005 03:49 PM
While Microsoft still has the monopoly on the desktop market with its Windows operating system, Novell is readying new features and functionality that it believes will propel its Novell Linux Desktop offering into the mass market. The current Novell Linux Desktop 9, which was released last November, is targeted not at the mass market but rather at those customers with more contained workloads. But all of that is set to change with the next version of the product, Novell Linux Desktop 10, scheduled for release next year.

"The next generation of product will appeal to and meet the needs of the mass consumer market," Nat Friedman, vice president of Linux desktop engineering at Novell Inc., told eWEEK in an interview at Novell's BrainShare conference here. "There is this perfect storm of things coming together, and much of this will be seen in the SLES [SuSE Linux Enterprise Server] 10 time frame." Friedman also has big plans for version 10 of the Linux desktop, which are matched by equally big claims. "We are getting ahead of [Microsoft] Windows for the first time," he said. "The release of SuSE Linux 9.2 brought a lot of innovative mobility features, while 9.3 has a variety of Mono-based applications."

Arbitrary File Execution Vulnerability
05/18/2004 01:31 PM
Roozbeh Afrasiabi has reported a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges. The problem is that "desktop.ini" files may contain CLSID references to arbitrary executables in the "[.ShellClassInfo]" section. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary files with another user's privileges when the user browses a folder containing a malicious "desktop.ini" file.
