Behind the desk

Behind the desk 01/28/2004 11:22 AM
Monday night I had to move my semi-built-in desk yesterday so the electricians could upgrade my wiring. As a result, I saw what had dropped behind it during the course of 8 years. It was pretty much the usual stuff, with a couple of exceptions: One copy of The Cluetrain Manifesto One copy of The Tipping Point 8 little screws used to attach hard drives to computer cases 12 uncurled paperclips used for resetting small hardware devices Pretty much the story of my life....

Floating Help Desk

Floating Help Desk 12/29/2003 11:48 PM

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 to sail with onboard help desk: I worked in a help desk once. Sadly, it wasn't onboard a cruise ship. I'd have to say, given a choice, I'd much prefer to debug issues from a wireless laptop on the lido deck.

The Queen Mary 2, which is scheduled to make its maiden voyage before the end of 2003, has roughly 150 computers to help manage shipboard systems, process credit card transactions and provide Internet connections for passengers and crew. Since these systems are vital to the ship and passenger satisfaction, Cunard, a division of Carnival Corp. in Miami, decided to install its own onboard help desk.

Dangerous Things on your desk

Dangerous Things on your desk 12/28/2004 05:28 AM
David Pescovitz: Images Hdisk1 Kaden Harris builds exquisitely-crafted "Dangerous Things" for your desktop, such as miniature working guillotines, catapults, and the Hypnodisk (pictured here), a staple of evil mythical masterminds. Sensory Impact interviewed Harris about his "antiques from a parallel universe":
"I did a prototype of a ‘pitching machine’ sort of thingie powered by 2 sewing machine motors that was supposed to fire anything from pencils to Sharpies, but it turned out to be insanely over-powered…workplace murders would have gone through the roof if I’d brought it to market. I have a newfound respect for 2H pencils these days."

The Cartoon Network is selling a $40,000 replica of Space Ghost's desk that features a pop-up 15-inch LCD screen, surround sound speakers, a built-in mini-fridge, and a cordless phone. I know a lot of people who like Space Ghost, but I doubt I've ever met a Space Ghost fan who was so fanatical that they'd consider dropping 40 grand on a desk emblazoned with his logo. But maybe I just haven't been hanging out with the right people. Read [Thanks, Alberto]...

Calling The Help Desk Is Popular

Calling The Help Desk Is Popular 07/29/2004 01:23 PM
How often do you call the corporate IT help desk? According to a new study from Siemens Business Services (they want your outsourced IT support business, so there's a bit of a bias) employees spend a ridiculous amount of time asking for help each week -- and it's not always for work-related technology problems. Over one-quarter of users apparently called their corporate IT help desk to get help with personal technology problems. Meanwhile, five percent of white collar workers claim to spend five hours a week chatting with tech support, and 36% say they spend about 30 minutes a week with tech support. Seems like an awful lot of problems to fix, though, you have to wonder how much of that time tech support is spending trying to fix people's personal tech problems.

Lian-Li OA F1 All-Aluminum Desk

Lian-Li OA F1 All-Aluminum Desk 04/12/2005 07:44 AM

lianli_oa.jpgAluminum folders Lian-Li, best known for their expensive, high-quality PC cases, have announced this doozy of a desk, built to be the ultimate accessory to one of their $300 aluminum cases. Called the 'OA,' almost every bit of the desk is solid, anodized aluminum, available in both natural metal color and black. Little touches include a desktop surface covered with a leather plate and a built-in flash memory card reader and media extender that adds FireWire, USB, and Ethernet right next to the keyboard tray. It's all a little cold, of course, but if you've got around $5,000 handy, UK site Kustom PCs is offering the F1 model for pre-order. (Thanks, Elmer!)

Gadget Desk Contest Winner

Gadget Desk Contest Winner 08/16/2004 04:18 PM

niveus_full.jpg imageI'd like to announce the winner of last Friday's Niveus PC Remote Control contest, Eric Antonow. So I did.

Not only did he get the most entries correct (although there were about five or six others that came very close), he took such wild stabs at accuracy on the ones he missed that I just had to give it to him ("42. 1/2" Plywood, GS1 Pine, probably Canadian from the knots" was a personal favorite).

Perhaps someday I'll give you all the correct answers, but not today (I may want to try this contest again soon, and surely some of the items will reappear - especially the ones nobody got). Here's a few hints, though: there were no Lego on the desk; No PalmOS devices; and the rug you all so generously complimented me on was purchased at local retailer Dee & Dee for the grand price of one American Dollar.

I mean, seriously, hand-woven by a Mexican shaman?
