Radio guy Tod Maffin just wrote up an impending redraft of Canadian copyright law. If this turns into a futile attempt to shore up failed business models by forcing the development of user-unfriendly technology, I’m not going to take it lying down. Other places to look are Michael Geist’s site and the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, which he founded. Canadians, please take note and get in the loop. With a minority government in Ottawa, we may even get some leverage.

London Calling 11/11/2003 03:21 PM
A nice sit down and a cup of tea are among many events (pdf) planned for GWB's impending visit to the UK. Police are estimating 100,000 plus demonstrators for his visit, and London's Mayor says of American requests for an exclusion zone to protect him, 'I don't think that's got a chance at all'. How does this level of grass-roots dissent compare to his reception when out and about in the US?

Who are you calling stinking?

Who are you calling stinking? 08/21/2004 01:48 AM
The offline reader in the house ran across a mention of a cheese in the latest New Yorker and asked me to Google it. The first result, from The Teddington Cheese Online, British and continental cheesemongers: Stinking Bishop is said to be derived from a cheese once made by Cistercian monks in the village of Dymock. Monks have always been associated with the production of 'washed rind' cheeses. These are cheeses which are washed in a variety of liquids. They are generally full-flavoured with lively aromas. Stinking Bishop is no exception and uses perry as its wash. It has a sticky yellow-orange rind and smells of old socks. The paste is soft and creamy, the flavour is delicious and, although full and distinctive, it is not quite as pungent as the odour may imply! At certain times of year the paste becomes firmer and slightly crumbly. The cheese is similar to the famous French Epoisses which has been banned from the public transport system in Paris. In fact, at a recent cheese show in France they were amazed to discover that Stinking Bishop was made in England. The cheese takes its name from the variety of pear used to make the washing solution. Stinking Bishop pears are one of over 100 varieties which are grown on the Gloucestershire-Herefordshire border. While this was never part of the family lore, Stinking Bishop was Teddington's Best New Cheese in 2003. If you are interesting in trying some, a 2 kilo cheese will run you about 42 pounds, plus shipping. Somehow, having one's name associated with a cheese with the aroma of old socks similar to a cheese that has been banned from the Paris Metro seems appropriate for someone who had to be dissuaded from naming his first-born child after his favorite cheese of the time, Cotswold, and whose favorite store is the Cheeseboard....

A Calling Card 04/03/2005 07:49 PM
Abu Ghraib.  Al Qaeda is now officially in Iraq.  This is classic Al Qaeda:

Gua rdianThe attack started at 7pm when a car bomb rammed one corner of the complex, followed by rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and small-arms fire. It appeared to be a feint because when guards scrambled to respond a second car bomb blew up at an opposite corner, again followed by a hail of bullets and bombs.

Let's hope that they don't attempt an assault like this on major infrastructure. The damage to high value equipment (special high capacity turbines and pumps) would be catastrophic.

Calling The Help Desk Is Popular

Calling The Help Desk Is Popular 07/29/2004 01:23 PM
How often do you call the corporate IT help desk? According to a new study from Siemens Business Services (they want your outsourced IT support business, so there's a bit of a bias) employees spend a ridiculous amount of time asking for help each week -- and it's not always for work-related technology problems. Over one-quarter of users apparently called their corporate IT help desk to get help with personal technology problems. Meanwhile, five percent of white collar workers claim to spend five hours a week chatting with tech support, and 36% say they spend about 30 minutes a week with tech support. Seems like an awful lot of problems to fix, though, you have to wonder how much of that time tech support is spending trying to fix people's personal tech problems.

A Republican senator who gets it

A Republican senator who gets it 05/28/2004 03:34 PM
From a profile of Senator Warner (R-Va) in today's Washington Post: Warner says his committee has a "solemn responsibility" to discover what went wrong and to "make sure it never, never happens again." But some conservatives are angry about the high-profile televised hearings, saying the prisoner-abuse issue is overblown and threatens to undermine the United States' primary mission in Iraq. ... "I think he should stop the hearings at this point; we've heard enough," said Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.), a committee member. "We have a war to win, and we need to keep our talents concentrated on winning the war as opposed to prisoner treatment." ... But Warner shows no signs of backing off, arguing that the country wants and deserves a vigorous examination of the sexual humiliation, physical abuse and torture of Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison. He has held three televised hearings this month to question top Pentagon officials and military commanders -- two more televised sessions than the House has allowed -- and he is planning more. Friends say Warner -- a sailor in World War II, a Marine during the Korean War and secretary of the Navy before he came to the Senate in 1979 -- is motivated by a strong belief that the reputations of both the military and the Senate are at stake unless they get to the bottom of the scandal. "To do otherwise would be contradictory to everything he has experienced in his professional life," said committee member John McCain (R-Ariz.). Besides, McCain added, "it would be incredibly stupid politically." ... Warner's pursuit of the issue has the backing of most Armed Services members as well as Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (Tenn.), though he has infuriated some conservatives. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), another committee member, has expressed concern that the hearing may be "a real distraction from trying to win the war, especially at this most fragile time." House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (Tex.) also suggested a lower profile for the prisoner-abuse issue, saying, "We should not allow it to distract us from the war at hand."... "Senator Warner is a military guy through and through. He volunteered twice, served in the armed forces twice -- that's twice more than a lot of members," said Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.)... Some see Warner's intervention against North and his outrage over the prisoner abuse as dual reflections of...

The Republican gospel on gay marriage

The Republican gospel on gay marriage 02/05/2005 09:14 PM
It's no secret that the Republican Party has been working for some time now to court America's black voters, once considered a reliable pillar of the Democrat's base. At Karl Rove's behest, the Bush administration has been forging alliances with prominent black evangelicals and the communities they represent, using the issue of gay marriage to get in the door. In a meeting organized this week by the Traditional Values Coalition, a far-right lobbying group with ties to the White House, 70 evangelical clergy sat down to draw up a "Black Contract With America on Moral Values," chief among which was opposition to gay marriage, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The Republican Smear Machine

The Republican Smear Machine 04/27/2004 08:43 AM

  • E.J. Dionne: Stooping Low to Smear Kerry. "Have you no sense of decency, sir?" It was the classic question posed by Joseph Welch to Sen. Joseph McCarthy 50 years ago during the Red-hunter's hearings investigating the Army for alleged communist influence. With his query, Welch, the Army's special counsel, began the undoing of McCarthy. Unfortunately, the question needs to be asked again. It needs to be posed to shamelessly partisan Republicans who can't stand the fact that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are facing off against a Democrat who fought and was wounded in Vietnam. Cheney said in 1989 that he didn't go to Vietnam because "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service." While Kerry risked his life, Bush got himself into the National Guard.

    A New Republican Scandal Emerges

A New Republican Scandal Emerges 01/22/2004 11:04 PM
Boston Globe: Infiltration of files seen as extensive. Republican staff members of the US Senate Judiciary Commitee infiltrated opposition computer files for a year, monitoring secret strategy memos and periodically passing on copies to the media, Senate officials told The Globe. From the spring of 2002 until at least April 2003, members of the GOP committee staff exploited a computer glitch that allowed them to access restricted Democratic communications without a password. Trolling through hundreds of memos, they were able to read talking points and accounts of private meetings discussing which judicial nominees Democrats would fight -- and with what tactics.

    06/28/2004 06:35 PM
This bizarre opinion piece by the Wall Street Journal's Larry J. Eastland argues that if there was no such thing as abortion, then there would be have been enough voting-age Democrats alive in 2000 to have given Gore the edge in the last election, because according to a survey, Democrats are more likely to have abortions than Republicans.
As liberals and Democrats fervently seek new voters and supporters through events, fund-raisers, direct mail and every other form of communication available, they achieve results minuscule in comparison to the loss of voters they suffer from their own abortion policies. It is a grim irony lost on them, for which they will pay dearly in elections to come.
