Now that George W Bush has, well, sort-of endorsed the iPod, do you have that sick-in-the-stomach feeling so much so that you'd want to "toss your iPod in the Potomac"?

Either that, or you can write in to get my address on where to send your iPods. :-)

AP - A woman tried to get rid of unwanted houseguests by gassing them. A family friend introduced the 51-year-old woman to Kevin Frye and Andrew King and she agreed to let them spend the night, investigators said. But they overstayed their welcome — refusing to leave for six weeks as they allegedly sold drugs from her apartment.

Programs that write programs

Programs that write programs 02/11/2004 10:54 AM
Following pointers from Ned Batchelder's recent excursion into code generation led me to another nice example of the power of dynamic languages. In order to streamline his use of C++, Ned wrote a little tool called cog which enables him to embed, in C++ programs, Python fragments that generate verbose and/or repetitive C++ constructs. He adds:
For more about code generation in general, try:
  • Dave Thomas interviewed about code generation. Dave Thomas is one of the Pragmatic Programmers, and I find I agree with him almost universally. He forbids putting the output of code generators under source control, I encourage it. We agree that the output should never be edited.
  • The Code Generation page on the c2 wiki. As will happen with a wiki, this fractures off in many directions, with many different viewpoints, both for and against code generation.

CMP Says It's Not Blocking Google

CMP Says It's Not Blocking Google 06/25/2004 11:54 AM

CMP Techweb.com's editor in chief, Fredric Paul, says the report I linked to yesterday is incorrect. He writes:

Anyway, we saw that you picked up the CyberJournalist piece on CMP blocking access to our stories from Google News. I don't know where that came from, but it is wrong. We do not and have never blocked access from Google or any other search engine. That's easily testable, try it yourself. We do, however, intercept links from certain competitors who reproduce significant portions of our stories on their own pages -- sometimes even stealing the first link-- before they finally post a link to our original material. In most cases, the intercept we put up allows the reader to then click to their intended destination. Other major technology publishers, including IDG, do similar things. We're not just old media, and we're not completely clueless.

Firefox to Strengthen Pop-up Blocking

Firefox to Strengthen Pop-up Blocking 04/05/2005 11:52 AM

say goodbye (again) to pop-ups!: Here's why a lot of sites have managed to get around Firefox's pop-up blocking lately.

A lot of people have been reporting a new breed of pop-ups on the web. This increasing menace is rooted in the pop-up capabilities of plug-ins like flash and Java. If you're seeing pop-ups and pop-unders, you're probably visiting sites that have flash or other plug-ins and those plug-ins are being exploited by advertisers to abuse you with annoying pop-ups and pop-unders.

Mozilla is taking steps to strengthed pop-up blocking, which is good news because I've seen it get a lot worse lately. Via Slashdot.

Saudi site blocking

Saudi site blocking 09/14/2004 03:12 PM
At the Berkman Center this afternoon, the lunch-time topic was countries that block access to particular sites. We heard about the Berkman's study of Saudi Arabia's practices. Jonathan Zittrain helped start the project when he realized that many people assume that if you could overcome the economic obstacles to global access, everyone would magically be on line. But even when the connection is there, countries are imposing limitations on what can be accessed. The project checks what's being filtered by the local ISPs. The study began in 2000 and is being done in conjunction with U of Toronto and U...

Jason Kottke on RSS Ad Blocking

Jason Kottke on RSS Ad Blocking 12/17/2004 06:32 PM
Jason is writing about RSS Ad Blocking: Given that people who use newsreaders are still of the early adopter sort who are used to blocking ads with Firefox or fast-forwarding through commercials with their TiVos, it seems likely that blocking advertising in RSS/Atom files might soon become an issue. He goes on to post the responses from the authors of PulpFiction, FeedDemon, and NetNewsWire. It's worth a read. And I'm sure the discussion will be interesting as always....
