Spammer Wins Restraining Order Against
SpamCop
05/11/2004 07:36 PM
A couple weeks back we wrote about how Scott Richter, who runs the well known spam operation OptInRealBig was suing SpamCop for damaging his reputation. Now, a court has issued a temporary restraining order against SpamCop saying they cannot send complaints about OptInRealBig to other ISPs and says they cannot make anonymous complaints. The restraining order is only good until May 20th, when SpamCop will respond in court - so it's not a huge deal since it's for so short a time period. However, the anonymity question is a bit one, since many people use SpamCop to report spam assume they are reporting spam anonymously. Again, like other cases, I wonder why SpamCop/IronPort could possibly be at fault. They're only making it easier to report potential spam. The people actually doing the reporting are the ones who are actually accusing OptIn of anything - which is probably why OptIn wants them revealed as well.

Well, that certainly was quick. Yesterday we wrote about the tempo rary restraining order against SpamCop from reporting any spam from OptInRealBig to ISPs other than OptIn's own, and today that temporary restraining order was dissolved, as it appears the lawyers for IronPort/SpamCop made a compelling argument that OptInRealBig wasn't telling the full story. The judge admits that: "The legal issues are more complicated than they originally appeared." The hearing on the case has also been moved up a few days and will be held early next week.

Airbus A380

Airbus A380 12/26/2004 11:11 PM

Airbus bets on building largest commercial plane: The Airbus A380 is set to be unveiled next month. It will be the largest passenger plane in history.

Its wings stretch nearly the length of a football field, about 50 feet longer than any plane in the air today. Nose to tail, it is longer than two blue whales. Inside the cabin, it has room for at least 550 passengers &mdash and as many as 1,000.

To put that in perspective, there are 131 towns in South Dakota that could fit their entire populations in one A380 — the smallest six could do it at the same time.

It's a true two-story plane: the second deck stetches the length of the plane, instead of just a smaller upper deck like on the 747.

Airbus envisions that airlines will use the ample space aboard the long-haul plane for cocktail lounges and private suites that serve as in-air bedrooms and double as business meeting areas.

As expected, Wikipedia has a stunning amount of data on it.

Airbus Trials Onboard GSM

Airbus Trials Onboard GSM 09/17/2004 04:16 PM
Airbus said it trialed a system that would allow air passengers to use their GSM cell phones on airplanes: The standard phones communicated with an onboard server that passed calls to Globalstar's satellite network. The satellites transmitted the calls to a ground station that forwarded them on to the recipient. It appears that airlines will likely charge customers for the privilege of using their phones onboard, though it's not clear how much. Also, it seems that the United States aviation authorities have been less eager than their counterparts overseas to accommodate for onboard cell phone use so it might be interesting to watch where such services first become available....
