11/10/2003 11:14 PMThe demand for quiet computers is growing, especially as people use
them to play music or stream video. Several companies build them from
scratch or modify boxes from the big computer makers, and it doesn't
cost much to lower the decibels.

probably won't be blogging too much. So, I've decided to post one of
my old "Dexter" cartoons to make up for my silence.
This
one was originally published in The Daily Beacon when I was a
student at the University of Tennessee, and it remains one of my
favorites since it hasn't aged a bit:

12/19/2004 03:48 PMThree things for a Sunday afternoon:
1. It was 85 degrees here yesterday and Friday. Can you believe
that? I guess Demeter worked something out with Hades, and got
temporary custody of Persephone for the weekend.
2. The ACME show last night was amazing. I have been in a lot of
ensemble casts in my life, and this cast is one of the best. It is
truly a privilege to share the stage with them, and I can't wait to do
this show every week. I remember feeling this way back in 2001 when I
was doing my first ACME show "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Sunday Show."
The camaraderie backstage creates a trust and relaxation
onstage, which takes the show up to eleven. There's
already talk of extending our show past the usual ten weeks,
because it's getting such a great response from the audience.
3. I read this in the comments recently, but I'm putting it here
for the RSS folks who probably missed Troy Rutter's The Top 10
Ways You Know You've Been Reading Wil Wheaton's Blog Too Much . .
.
10. You pronounce Wil's site as "dubya dubya dee enn" in general
conversation.
9. You take a trip to California to go geocaching hoping to see Wil's
name in the log.
8. You try to send an update to the IMDB to change Ernest's last name
to Borg9.
7. You Photoshop Wil's name onto a box of Wheat Thins.
6. You buy the "Wil has a posse" thong for your girlfriend.
5. You write a letter to the producers of Alias pleading with them to
write Wil into a dream sequence for Sidney.
4. You wish you could go back in time to help Wil kick his own ass.
3. You buy a case of voodoo dolls and put the last name "Kimmel" on
all of them.
2. You apologize out loud to Wil when Foster dies in Ghost Recon 2.
1. You watch Boston Legal and at the end of the credit you scream
"That's William FUCKING Shatner!"
Thanks, Troy! The last time I was in a top ten list, it featured
clever ways to kill my Star Trek character. Six of them involved
Klingons and soap-on-a-rope, but your list more than balances that
out.

audio/video from a web server: A couple of years ago, I spent
hours tracking down the information that's on this page. I wish I had
found it back then. Very handy.
Streaming can be initiated with the help of redirector files.
Linking to the redirector file will cause the associated player
software to start on the client computer (if it's properly set up),
and playback will start almost immediately (after buffering a small
amount of data). Note that the player software will only start if a
user has selected to play the media, this is a big advantage compared
to embedded media.

I have yet to enter Proto Merkabah. I was going to sit down and
play Xenosaga, but I was dealing with a crash in the new CSS parser
caused by some of you Web freaks using :not (a CSS3 selector supported
by Mozilla). The syntax of this selector is such that it isn't
compatible with the CSS2.1 grammar, so I added rules to recognize
:not.
Once I did that I realized I was about 10 lines away from
implementing :not. Ok, so 12 lines later (yes, it did turn out to be
a little bigger than I thought, turns out :not can't nest for no
apparent reason I can discern), :not came into being in Safari.
So of course then I had to test :not, which meant I had to go load
the CSS3 test suite. As I started flipping through pages I found all
sorts of bugs with some of the selectors like the ~= selector, and
then I stumbled on all these brainlessly easy selectors that Safari
just didn't support.
Well, that just pissed me off, so I went and implemented :empty,
:root and ::selection. Yes, I am just that random. Maybe I'll do
some of the other CSS3 selectors if I have time.
Anyway, back to Xenosaga. I've played enough poker at the casino
to afford the 300,000 GP AWGS, and I got Shion's super Ether attack
that involves the summoning of a giant robot called Erde Kaiser. I
think he's supposed to be intimidating and just generally badass, but
I think he looks like a giant Transformer.
Add to that the fact that he's brightly colored and seems to be
built out of Lego blocks, and you just really don't have a recipe for
intimidation.
The game still rocks though. :)

Cory Doctorow:
UK's Glastonbury music festival will get around a late-night ban on
loud bass by handing wireless headphones out to the attendees,
producing a silent rave:
"I like the idea of people dancing in total silence," said Emily
Eavis, one of the festival organisers and daughter of the founder
Michael Eavis. "Imagine if you were feeling a bit worse for wear and
thought, 'This would be a nice quiet place to sit down'.
"You would be completely freaked out to see 3000 people dancing in
silence. It's certainly quirky, but our big push this year is keeping
the noise down because that's what the council is keen on."
