Free but shackled: The Java trap

Free but shackled: The Java trap

Free but shackled: The Java trap 04/12/2004 06:04 AM

Editor's note: Stallman's timing with this piece is impeccable, and it dovetails nicely with the questions raised by Javalobby's Rick Ross in this article. If your program is free software, it is basically ethical--but there is a trap you must be on guard for. Your program, though in itself free, may be restricted by non-free software that it depends on. Since the problem is most prominent today for Java programs, we call it the Java Trap.

Free software Java platforms 01/14/2003 02:28 PM

Richard Stallman is interested whether XSLT-process, my XSLT processor and debugger Emacs interface for the Saxon and Xalan XSLT processors runs on top of a free software JDK.

As far as I know Kaffe is one such free-software implementation of a Java virtual machine. There are many other implementations listed at Kaffe's Web site.

Does anybody have any experience with any of these in a real project? How much of the JVM functionality and the associated class libraries in JDK 1.3 are implemented? Can one run an XML parser and an XSLT processor like Saxon or Xalan on top of them?

2Wire MediaPortal

2Wire MediaPortal 01/03/2005 02:48 PM

2wire_mediaportal.jpg imageThere's an opportunity for set-top manufacturing companies like Moxi and 2Wire to really outclass TiVo, simply because they designing devices around a very specific set of, well, specifications. The newly announced 2Wire MediaPortal, for instance, isn't just a satellite receiver. It's also an internet/Ethernet-enabled media streamer with a built-in 250GB hard drive, designed to provide all the PVR functions you'd expect, (including HD recording), as well as over-the-wire on demand content. Wrapping that all up in a cohesive, consistant interface makes for a much more pleasant, integrated experience that generic set top boxes can't as easily provide.

Wouldn't it be hot to type "Law & Order" in the search field, then page through results that included PVR-recorded shows, ripped DVDs, live TV, on demand streaming media, and downloaded videos that live on your PC's networked storage? This MediaPortal box can't do all of that (the DVD ripping and the downloaded movies part might be trouble), but it can do everything else, plus stream your home content to a mobile device. Who knows how well it'll all work together, but it holds a lot of promise.

2Wire Boosts Reach

2Wire Boosts Reach 12/02/2003 02:32 PM
2Wire's new products aim to extend Wi-Fi deeper in the home. The combined DSL/Wi-Fi modem uses 400 milliwatts of power, far more than most Wi-Fi access points, and uses three antennas. These upgrades, 2Wire claims, extend coverage in a wider footprint. SBC and BellSouth both sell modems from 2Wire. 2Wire calls the radio 802.11b and the release doesn't mention that customers can only use a compatible 2Wire card, so it sounds like this complies with standards. The release should be available here at some point....

Knoppix: CD-Based Linux

Knoppix: CD-Based Linux 07/06/2004 11:39 PM

I'm writing this entry from a Linux machine...but I never installed Linux. I've booted my PC off a Knoppix disc, which is a bootable Linux CD. I'm in Linux now, but I just need to pop the CD and reboot, and I'm back to Windows.

You can get the CD image file at www.knoppix.com (I used Bit Torrent to get my version). Burn it to a CD, stick it in the drive, and reboot. You will boot into a really nice Linux distribution.

There are no users on the system — you're automatically logged on as root. If you're worried about this, don't be — remember that you booted from a CD. If you screw something up as root, just reboot and the system will be back to normal.

While Knoppix can read everything on your hard drive, it has no write access by default, so it's not going to do anything to your existing stuff. You can allow it to write, but it's not advisable with an NTFS drive. Knoppix creates a ramdisk to store all the stuff it needs while running. It accesses everything else off the CD, just like it would off the hard drive normally. When you run a new program, you can hear the CD spool up. Consequently, it's slower than a normal Linux machine, but not by much.

It's fully functional — it detected everything on my machine, including FireWire and USB devices. I just had to get the network card to broadcast a DHCP request and I was on the network. It recognized my Lexmark E210 printer just fine, and I'm listening to MP3s on XMMS as I write this. I had more trouble with my dedicated Linux install at work, and I spent days fiddling with that.

It comes with scads of software, like most Linux distributions — KDE, Open Office, The Gimp, Mozilla, Konquerer, etc. Since it forms a ramdisk when it boots, you can save files and work with them just as if it were a normal operating system. I saved the image above off a Web site, cropped it, and converted it to JPG in The Gimp. If I wanted to keep it beyond this session, I could always FTP it somewhere (remember that KDE is FTP-aware — you can map an FTP site to a local folder, so you'd never really know the difference).

I'm fairly well stunned by this. It's really amazing. Sure, it can't really store or persist anything locally from session to session, but most of my apps are Web-based and my email is IMAP, so I'm actually pretty functional.

If you ever wanted to try Linux but you don't want to make any changes to your current Windows set-up, Knoppix is exactly what you're looking for.

Last year I bought an IBM T30 Thinkpad, intending to install Linux on its hard drive sometime. Meanwhile, using a Knoppix LiveCD let me run Linux on the laptop while retaining the factory Windows XP installation. The notebook is my travel machine, so I also bought a Linksys WPC55AG PC Card wireless network adapter that supports 801.11a/b/g for the Thinkpad. For secure wireless Linux surfing, I was determined to find some configuration that would work with minimal intervention at boot time and that was easy enough that my wife could load it.

Knoppix Saved My Dad's Data

Knoppix Saved My Dad's Data 11/10/2003 11:39 PM
Even before today, I couldn't say enough good things about Knoppix, the coolest run-from-CD Linux Distribution ever. But it gets better. When I got home from flying this evening, there were two messages on my answering machine. Both were my Dad telling me that his work laptop was fubar. He wanted to find a way to backup the data to his Linux box (one that I setup for him as a home server last year--that he doesn't know much about)....

Linksys Posts Beta Firmware to Correct
Remote Admin Problem
06/04/2004 02:13 PM
Linksys has posted beta firmware for its WRT54G that closes a potential remote access hole in its security: The initial report indicated that remote administration of the WRT54G was possible out of the box. The consultant who reported the problem checked other WRT54Gs: if firewall protection is turned on (Linksys says this is the default and users confirm), then the remote issue is non-existent. However, some of the units that the consultant purchased to test had firewall service turned off out of the box. A Linksys spokesperson said that this release is labeled beta because other functionality changes are in progress and not yet finalized. Linksys' official statement reads, "For those rare few that do disable the firewall and turn off remote admin on their WRT54G, Linksys advises those users to download the latest beta firmware which is posted on the Linksys website." I just purchased a WRT54G to test out its default configuration, and I can confirm that I received a unit with firmware v2.02.2 (which predates the 2.02.7 March 2004 release), and that its firewall service enabled....
