Fake Brand Names Become Real
11/17/2003 05:34 PMPeople have been having a lot of fun making fun of the various
"nonsense" corporate names that are currently popular among companies
like Accenture and Consignia. These are brand names that kind of
sound like a word and are created by so-called "branding companies" to
give off some sort of perception such as "forward thinking" or
"technologically sound". One advertising company thought the trend
was so silly they came up with a bunch of similar names themselves and
put up a phony front end that would let you
create your own brand name
based on the attributes you wanted. What they didn't realize was that
some people
might actually use the brand names they came up with. Apparently,
a few of the brand names they suggest have been snapped up by real
companies - though, two of the companies claim they had no idea about
the site and came up with the brand names independently.

"While causing harm to no one"
02/05/2005 09:14 PMHere's more on today's New York Supreme Court decision on gay
marriage. The court ruled that the New York's city clerk may no longer
deny marriage licenses to gay couples. The decision, which is
available
here, won't take effect for 30 days, leaving time for an appeal to
be filed before the city clerk would have to begin allowing gay
marriages.
Self-help equals self-harm?
Self-help equals self-harm?
12/02/2003 03:10 AM Self-he
lp equals self-harm? Are self-help books harmful rather than
helpful? This article argues that dissatisfaction with one's abilities
and achievements will not not be helped by affirmations of self-worth.
Nor will we succeed in coping with the bitter feelings for those who
have wronged us by practing the "anger therapy" of slamming

On the avoidance of harm...
On the avoidance of harm...
03/13/2003 10:16 AMThere's some fascinating stuff around about the relationship of
depressive illness to strategies of harm avoidance:
Clinical depression is associated with two modulations
occurring simultaneously and chronically, dysphoria and the
generalized stress response. Dysphoria is a modulation that is part of
the harm perception/avoidance axis. This is an emotion we all feel
when we perceive a futility in our current behavior and experience
disappointment. In contrast, we experience anger and aggression when
the disappointment is perceived as being caused by an external source.
When the disappointment causes dysphoria, the modulation shift
increases behavioral inhibition, increases anticipation of harm,
increases harm avoidance, increases introspection, decreases
exploration of the environment, decreases reactivity to external
stimuli, decreases appetite for food and decreases sexual
appetite.
In short, it coordinates functions that allow us to retreat,
introspect and to redirect our efforts in a more effective direction.
In this instance, dysphoria facilitates adaptation to disappointment.

I like that. Dysphoria faciliates adaptation to
disappointment. Lots of interesting things fall out of
investigations like these, but this sense of harm avoidance is the one
that interests me most - that the depressive personality and the
introverted personality are heavily connected. That the wallflower
reacts to disappointment, attributed internally. Fascinating
stuff.

Forget Harm, Mobile Phones Help Kids
Think Clearly?
09/23/2004 03:21 AMEvery month or so, yet another study comes out that says mobile phone
radiation either does, or does not, cause some sort of bodily harm,
often in the form of cancer. Each study is trumpeted by the press as
the definitive study on the subject, only to have that view completely
turned around a month later. That's why we tend not to write about
those sorts of studies any more (and, yes, there was one earlier this
week). However, the head of the PTA in the UK is now claiming that
mobile
phones help kids think clearly. He's quoted as saying: "From a
perspective of pupil performance, it can enhance things, because that
heating effect actually improves the neuron transfers between neural
pathways, and therefore your thinking ability goes up." This, of
course, seems to go well beyond what
any study has -- though,
the guy in question claims a nameless British scientist told him this,
so, obviously, it must be true.
