08/02/2004 12:23 PMMicrosoft's chief financial officer, John Connors, talked up the
"innovative pipeline" that will ensure that new products and
technology keep rolling out through future years.
But "future" was the key word at the annual financial
analyst meeting when it came to the next major version of Windows.
Microsoft did not provide the final ship date for the release of
Longhorn. "We've made really good progress in the last year. The
next milestone for us is getting the beta out sometime next year and
that'll be the point at which the feature set and the schedule will
really be pretty much locked down," said Bill Gates, Microsoft's
chief software architect.
"It's a release that's driven by the breakthrough features, and
we'll have a strong sense of exactly what gets in and what the
schedule looks like as we get that beta out sometime in the next ...
well, next year sometime." Gates did not say the beta would be
released in the first half of next year, as the company had been
saying prior to last week. If the beta should slip to the second half
of the year, that could have a snowballing effect on the final ship
date and potentially push the product beyond the 2006 target that the
company has bandied about.

current version of Exchange Server was released in 2003. It's a
dominant program in the market, but it faces
competition from
products sold by IBM, Novell, Sun Microsystems and others.

Microsoft Small Business Accounting

02/05/2005 09:45 PMAccording to Karan Khanna, product manager for Microsoft's forthcoming
Small Business Accounting (now in beta testing), Microsoft is aiming
for a release of the platform in the first half of 2006. Microsoft
had previously announced product availability in late 2005. From the
transcript of The .NET Show featuring SBA:
"ROBERT HESS: Now Christin mentioned that we were in the beta
phase right now in this application. When does it actually come out
into the market for real?
KARAN KHANNA: The plan is in the first half of next year you would
have the application available. But it's in beta right now. "
The application, targeting small (1-25) businesses, is currently in

those interested should visit the <A

Show episode includes demos of development with the SDK as well as
code samples. Other exciting news for developers is that, because
user security for SBA is built into the SQL database (MSDE is
supported), the platform will allow direct access to the database from
third party applications or even end users' - import/analyze via SQL
ODBC in spreadsheets, for example.

Microsoft Announce Data Protection
Manager 2006 Beta
04/12/2005 01:47 PMIn an email sent to existing product testers today, Microsoft
announced the upcoming beta of System Center Data Protection Manager
2006.
Data Protection Manager, or DPM, is a software tool aimed at all
Windows users to aid the backup and recovery process. Microsoft have
long been keen on simplifying this feature in Windows, introducing the
system restore functionality with Windows XP.
The software features speedy recovery via disk-based backup systems,
allowing "recovering in minutes instead of hours";
continuous protection without impact IT services; integration with
tape drives via the Volume Shadow Copy Service API in Windows Server
2003. The company also hopes the software will offer good value for
money by letting IT professionals work on other tasks; as many a
Windows user / systems administrator will note, the process of backup
and recovery is a costly and time intensive one.
Microsoft claim that <a
href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/dps/partners/d
efault.mspx">30 partners</a> in the storage industry
have announced their support for the new software, and will be working
on creating solutions for Windows clients. Microsoft will make an
official announcement on the launch tomorrow.
