I recently met with Groove's Jack Ozzie and Michael Helfrich. Jack is
a co-founder and VP, development; Michael is VP, applied technology.
The subject, of course, was the forthcoming V3 of Groove, a product I
first saw in beta four years ago this spring. We had a wide-ranging
discussion; here are some of the key takeaway points.

Apparently, Groove was sold to Microsoft for $120
million in cash (via Dave
)
which falls short of $155 million invested into Groove. Since
Microsoft was
the largest investor, it's share out of the $120 million is about
$80 million.
That means Microsoft bought rest of Groove for just $40 million.
Groove investors got some of their money back for which founders
gained some respect.
Microsoft got a bargain (?!?) and a new CTO. And employees
got nothing for their
shares. Phew!

03/14/2005 04:03 PMMicrosoft on Thursday said it will acquire Groove Networks and make

“virtual office” collaboration software into its Office
line of productivity applications. Ozzie, the inventor of Lotus Notes
and a collaboration guru, will report to Bill Gates, Microsoft’s
chairman and chief software architect….

Microsoft snaps up Groove
Microsoft snaps up Groove
03/14/2005 05:45 PMMicrosoft to Acquire
Groove Networks: And it's making
Ray Ozzie, Groove's founder,
chief technical officer. [Link via
Dave Winer.] This strikes me as a pretty big deal -- here's
why.
Ozzie, the creator of Lotus Notes, started Groove as an effort, once and for
all, to solve the still incredibly thorny set of problems surrounding
collaborative software. This is an area that's been legendarily
difficult for technology companies to crack (Netscape, for example,
foundered after it took a turn in this direction by acquiring a
company called Collabra). Ozzie and Groove haven't figured everything
out, but they've come a lot closer than many of their predecessors.
Most recently, Groove has found a big client in the U.S. government,
which has adopted its technology for extensive military use (causing
a
certain amount of controversy).
By scooping up Ozzie and Groove, Microsoft is doing what it has
always done: extending its reach by embracing (or consuming) smaller
companies that have made technical breakthroughs Microsoft's big
research labs and development teams haven't been able to match. It's a
smart move for Bill Gates and company -- an indication that they
remain absolutely determined not to fall behind the competition, and a
sign that Microsoft intends to push the boundaries of collaborative
software's capabilities. It will be interesting to see where they take
Groove: Let's face it, Windows and Office are both pretty creaky for
users who want to share and coordinate work nimbly and quickly. Gee,
maybe information technology does still
matter, sometimes.
Microsoft Buys Groove
Microsoft Buys Groove
03/14/2005 06:07 PMMicrosoft to Acquire Groove Networks, Combining Talents to Create
Anytime, Anywhere Collaboration Products and Services: This is
kind of a no-brainer. Micrsoft owned 25% of Groove, and it was only a
matter of time until Groove got built into Windows.
Microsoft Corp. announced today that it will acquire
Groove Networks Inc., a leading provider of collaboration software for
the "virtual office."
This will essentially give every copy of Windows a built-in private
P2P network. The RIAA can't be happy about that prospect.
I'm not a big fan of Groove. I spent $700 on it, altogether. It
did the job, I guess, but I ended up using it for little more than
file syncing between machines — about 10% of the app. I just
never felt comfortable with it, because of the Windows lock-in.
