Should Newbies Need To Read The Rules? 04/12/2004 03:44 AM

This idea seems to occur to everyone once they get frustrated enough with something stupid happening online. Here's yet another column suggesting that newbie internet users be required to read and understand a set of rules (such as "do not reply to spammers") before they can get online. Could anyone actually come up with a set of rules that everyone would actually agree with?

Newbies take on LiveCDs; everybody wins 02/17/2004 03:55 AM
With Linux appearing more frequently in the press and on TV, people are becoming more curious about it. They are still reluctant to leave their comfortable Windows world, but they are curious. Enter LiveCD Linux -- a CD with a full Linux operating system that runs completely from the CD without the need to install anything on the hard drive. Taking ten people who never used Linux before and who have only basic computer skills, I set out to run several LiveCDs through some informal tests.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 Reviewed (Verdict:
Good for Newbies)
04/18/2005 08:22 AM

nikon_5900rev.jpgThe Nikon Coolpix 5900 is a step towards the consumer camera of the future. It doesn't offer a lot of finesse, like manual exposure control over aperture and shutter speeds, but it does offer things like 'Face-Priority AF,' (automatic focus on human faces) and D-Lighting (automatic contrast correction). Now they don't always work—the Face-Priority in particular has some problems picking the right face on which to focus—but when they do they can make taking high-quality pictures much easier for people that don't know what they're doing. That said, if you're already a photography champ, the $350 Nikon 5900 is only going to get in your way.

Photography Blog has a typically in-depth review with sample images and more.

Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;

Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;
Knievel Rules Judges Are Bimbos
01/04/2005 08:20 PM
Really not quite sure what to make of this one, but it's too amusing to pass up. Apparently, a few years ago, ESPN posted a picture of famed daredevil Evel Knievel with his arms around two women (one of whom was his wife) with the caption: "You're never too old to be a pimp." Knievel, not realizing this was a (weak) attempt at complimenting him, sued ESPN for defamation. A lower court tossed out the ruling, and he appealed. Now the Appeals Court has ruled against him as well, noting that, based on the context no one is actually going to think Knievel is a "pimp," and, in fact that the statement was supposed to be a positive one, as the slang of the day suggests. Knievel, apparently lacking a sense of irony over this particular case, has responded by calling the judges "bimbos." The full quote is: "They ruled against the law. What good is law in the United States of America if five or six goddamn bimbos are going to rule against it?" You think he intended that as a compliment? Anyway, in the meantime, feel free to go on captioning photos on the web while calling people pimps.

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PM
USA Today is claiming that the rules have changed for resumes, now that they're mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time when people were told to send out fewer resumes? If anything, it seems like this strategy is the wrong strategy in the digital age where HR folks are so inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to paper resumes is much more effective in getting attention.

CBS Affair on KQED

CBS Affair on KQED 09/21/2004 02:23 PM
I'll be joining a panel Wednesday morning on KQED's Forum program, to discuss the CBS Bush memos story and its implications. We're on from 9-10 a.m.

The Berger Affair

The Berger Affair 07/21/2004 11:16 AM

  • NY Times: A Kerry Adviser Leaves the Race Over Missing Documents. Samuel R. Berger, the former national security adviser to President Bill Clinton, resigned abruptly Tuesday as a senior adviser to John Kerry's presidential campaign after the disclosure that he had improperly removed classified material on terrorism from a secure government reading room last year. The decision came after Mr. Berger endured a day of furious criticism from Republican leaders, who accused him of breaching national security and possibly passing classified material to Mr. Kerry's campaign. Democrats, in turn, accused the Bush administration of leaking word of an F.B.I. investigation of Mr. Berger as a way of diverting attention from the release of the Sept. 11 commission's final report Thursday.
  • Plainly, Berger screwed up in a serious way here. The acts he has acknowledged are improper at the very least, and perhaps much worse than that. Maybe we'll know one of these days when the investigation concludes. Almost equally plainly, someone in the Bush administration or campaign illegally leaked word of the investigation just in time to start a political potboiler. The timing cannot be coincidental. The 9/11 commission's report, harshly critical of both the Clinton and Bush administrations' anti-terrorism policies, is being issued this week. And next week comes the Democratic convention in Boston. The Republicans are predictably claiming (among other things) a coverup, even though the 9/11 commission staff has been widely quoted as saying the commission had the documents in question. USA Today reports, for example: "There is no indication that Berger's action affected the 9/11 commission's work; a spokesman for the panel said Tuesday that the classified papers — some of which are still missing — were copies of original documents." The most puzzling aspect of this, as Josh Marshall correctly notes, is Berger's political tone-deafness. Marshall asks: "Why didn't Sandy Berger step aside from his advisory position for John Kerry some time ago?" Good question.

    England's love affair with the utility
    bill
    05/14/2004 12:19 PM
    Simon, a Swede living in London, was inspired by my tale of woe at Orange Mobile's idiocy yesterday, and has posted a damned funny essay about the English National Love Affair With the Gas Bill.
    "I consume gas, therefore I am" kind of sums up the British notion of identity. The world is a vague and fleeting place, changing from day to day like a flowing river. The vast networks of gas pipes, electrical wires and water pipes, however, are firmly in place somewhere underground. They are the arteries of our modern society, weaving their way through the soil from which we harvest our food, and in which we bury our dead. The utility bill is thus our connection to the very fabric of society - our proto-identity as social beings.

    Hence, it should come as no surprise that new connections in this network, or connections to completely different networks, can not be made by mere "individuals". How preposterous would it not be if a "person", i.e. the moisty fungus that grows around an utility bill, for instance tried to open a bank account? Where would that account go? Where would it be? Flowing freely in the imaginary world of light and air, fluttering unconnected to the networks of society, that's where.

    One hundred years ago today, 1,358 members of the Kleindeutschland, the German neighborhood on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, boarded a chartered ferry named the General Slocum for a picnic excursion to Long Island. A fire broke out in the ship's hold while it cruised up the East River, the captain ran the vessel aground on the rocky shores of North Brother Island amid the swift currents of Hell Gate, and when it was all over 1,021 people (mainly women and children) had perished by drowning or from the fire, and it remained the worst single-day New York City disaster until 9/11.
