Google Hoarding the Pie?
02/07/2005 02:12 AMOm Malik looked up some of Google's SEC filings and found the
following: Google has been paying more money every quarter to the
affiliates. However, TAC as a percentage of advertising revenues
generated by network sites is declining. For instance in quarter
ending June 30, 2004, the company had paid out 80% of the revenues
generated by its network. In quarter ending Sept 30, 2004, it was down
to 79% and now in the December 2004 quarter, that number was...

Why Innovation And Hoarding Intellectual
Property Don't Mix
08/10/2004 01:58 PMWe recently wrote about how
innovat
ion was more important to the economy than invention, while noting
that the patent system was really more focused on protecting
invention, and slowing down innovation. Now, Robert I. Sutton is
noting the worrying trend that, as startups are showing up again, they
all seem to be most focused on
protecting and hiding their
intellectual property which
tends
to harm, more than help, innovation. Remember, the original point
of the patent system wasn't just to protect information, but to open
it up so that others could make use of it. Unfortunately, that use of
the patent system is becoming less apparent every day. Sutton points
out, properly, that some protection of intellectual property makes
sense, but: "If you take it too far, innovation can't happen. If you
never show your ideas to other people, or to only a very few
like-minded people, then your ideas won't get any better and you won't
get the information you need about which customers will—and will
not—buy them." Innovation happens by getting your product out into
the market and figuring out what it takes to get people to buy into
the idea." Innovation isn't about a (patentable) spark of genius, but
"world-class persistence to spend long hours trying to do new things
with old ideas." Isn't it time we reformed the patent system to
encourage real innovation, and not this focus on hiding away
inventions and making innovation more difficult?

put forth some ideas for building houses that are designed for single
people. The document asks the questions "Why have more than one

an office or studio?", and "Is it feasible to build an industrial loft
in the middle of the woods or suburbs?"
Comments appreciated, especially from folks with some experience in
architecture or construction.

Are Burglars Casing Houses In Their
Underwear?
Are Burglars Casing Houses In Their
Underwear?
06/05/2005 11:57 PMVirtual tours of homes for sale allow home shoppers to effortlessly
tour houses for sale from the comfort of their own homes. However,
it's not possible to know what the viewers are actually after.
Is a virtual tour a good way for
burglars to case a house? Burglars can check out locks, locations
of valuable goods and entryways for targeted houses with anonymity and
zero fear of being caught. This concern sounds a bit inflated,
however. Though realtors report that sellers are wary of the
sophisticated technology and opt to post photographs instead of the
more detailed virtual tour, this is hardly indicative of a fear of
burglary. Traditional open houses seem to be a far better way for
burglars to check out places, and most likely a more common choice for
today's burglars. The supporting evidence discussed in the article is
purely anecdotal -- it would be telling to compare burglary rates for
all homes versus homes with the virtual tour and with open houses in a
given neighborhood. That said, until virtual tours somehow enable
virtual burglaries to happen, there doesn't seem to be a good reason
to be concerned.

Coffee Houses Cross Paths with History,
Again
Coffee Houses Cross Paths with History,
Again
01/07/2004 02:37 PMFrom the There's Nothing New Under the Sun Department, coffee houses
in the 17th and 18th centuries were the Wi-Fi hotspots of their day:
The Economist writes (without byline, as is its wont) about the
parallels between the political and editorial foment that occurred in
17th and 18th century coffeehouses in England and, to a lesser extent,
France, and how these centers of iquity (as opposed to iniquity,
Wodehouse might write) led to the foundation of insurers and
publications. In fact, coffee houses were often the mailing addresses
for folks before street addresses were common. It all sounds awfully
familiar, doesn't it? Wi-Fi hotspots in coffee houses thus have this
excellent pedigree. The author of this piece is the same fellow who
write the charming and excellent The Victorian Internet, which relayed
the development of the telegraph and its effect on the planetary
infosphere, and how it paralleled (and predicted) Internet trends,
including the bubble. The author is working on a book now about the
coffee house/Internet cafe overlap....
