Genetic Responsibility

Genetic Responsibility 05/05/2004 08:26 AM
Somewhere in the royal forests of Jaktorów, 1627 AD. Hidden deep in the primeval forest of what will become modern-day Poland, a poacher notches an arrow to the string of his bow. In an open glade, preserved for the exclusive hunting of the king, an animal that exists nowhere else in the world grazes. Her ancestors are preserved in ochre paints on the cave walls of Lascaux. Relatives to her bloodline will become the black fighting bulls of Spain, but they will be pale shadows compared to her. Standing more than six feet high at the shoulder, the aurochs' horns are massive scimitars of bone, spreading more than an arms span from her broad triangular head. She is ten feet from nose to tail, tons of muscle and flesh that are impossible to stop once she has begun her terrifying charge. The wood of the bow creaks as the poacher draws the arrow. The aurochs looks up curiously. The arrow flies free. The aurochs bellows with pain and range as the shaft sinks into her body, spearing her heart. Bloody froth drips from her mouth as her head rears back - and then the massive animal falls, the collapse of her body echoing through the forest. The leaves shake for a moment. The aurochs chest falls as she draws a shuddering breath. And then she dies. She is the last of her kind.

"There is no excuse for superior authority not choosing the most suitable agents for particular duties, and not removing unsuitable agents from particular duties." With all the talk of empires and resignations, a reflection to history turns up a remarkable story about an al ready remarkable man:

A tense time in British India came to a head when General Reginald Dyer's brigade opened fire on an unarmed crowd assembled in Amritsar with machine guns, killing 379 and wounding over 1500. Command wanted to relieve him of duty, but patriotic (and imperialist) fervor at home led to a parliamentary debate which was expected to repudiate this decision and honor him. Enter War Secretary Winston Churchill who defended the Government so eloquently that the minds and hearts of the entire deliberative body were turned.

Corporate pseudo Responsibility 05/26/2004 09:05 AM
David Batstone at Worthwhile (where I also blog) expresses skepticism that is not only appropriate but inevitable when it comes to corporations issuing reports about how well they're upholding their self-defined social responsibilities. Some of the reports may be honest but they suffer from Electronic Ballot syndrome: By their nature, they engender disbelief. I'd be more impressed if corporations enabled an independent, third-party group to investigate them and issue reports. Is there any such group that gets full cooperation and support from the corporations it researches?...

Opening Up WiFi Networks To Deny
Responsibility

Opening Up WiFi Networks To Deny
Responsibility
05/18/2004 06:16 PM
A short article in Salon comes across a bit too innocently, about someone who has decided to open up their WiFi access to anyone close enough to use it in order to deny any responsibility for any illegal traffic that goes over his network. This isn't a new argument. It's been used before. The problem is that it's unlikely to work. We've pointed out in the past that all of the RIAA's lawsuits against individuals contain no proof that that particular individual was sharing files, but that hasn't stopped the courts from deeming them valid (though, no one has really tested it yet). In this particular article, the guy uses Comcast, and even taunts them that he'll deny any responsibility if he gets accused of sharing music or movie files. Of course, Comcast will immediately cut him off for violating his terms of service that say he can't share his account via WiFi. In theory, he could even be charged with a felony< /a> for helping to share an internet connection. Meanwhile, the article attempts to raise deeper issues that we've touched on before about whose responsibility is it if you get hacked. Is it your own responsibility for having weak security? The writer of this article seems to think that's a perfectly valid excuse - even though he's purposely setting the system up with weak security. Considering the recent fines by the government against companies that set up weak security that allowed them to get hacked, he might not have much of an argument. All of that being said, I do think sharing WiFi is a good idea - if your ISP allows you to do it. I think more ISPs should allow (or even encourage) users to share their connection via WiFi, because it makes the connection that much more useful. That doesn't mean there aren't security concerns, but those can be dealt with if the person setting up the system, and those connecting to it are smart about how they do so.

To use the requisite automotive analogy, if Six Apart were a shiny new car, I feel like I was the person who put the first dent in it, and then a couple thousand people stood around pointing and saying "It's totalled!"
It's been a hard week for everyone at Six Apart with the difficulty with the launch of the Movable Type 3 and the licensing and communications about this. Anil seems to feel quite responsible. It sounds a bit like Rummy getting set up to be the fall guy, but fine. It was Anil's fault. ;-)

Having said that, I think everyone at Six Apart feels very responsible and is working really hard listening to all the feedback and fixing the licenses and communications of them. They're sincerely trying to be "good" so I'd appreciate any slack people are willing to cut them. Also, please continue to send them and myself ideas and feedb ack on how we can make the MT 3 license better for everyone. Thanks!

Businesses Want Software Companies To
Take Responsibility For Security Holes

Businesses Want Software Companies To
Take Responsibility For Security Holes
05/19/2004 12:03 PM
The debate has gone on forever about just how liable software companies should be for security holes that are later found in their software products. Both sides make compelling points. Those who are constantly patching and dealing with the security holes say that the software makers should be held responsible for their poor product design. Software developers point out that designing without any bugs or security holes is simply impossible - and making the company liable for any problems would destroy most software companies (especially small, independent developers). Either way, companies are sick of taking the blame for not patching security holes and are saying that software developers, even if they don't accept liability for vulnerabilities, at least need to accept some responsibility for making the situation better. The Business Roundtable, a trade group of CEOs, is calling on software companies to do a better job building in security, while also making it easier to update and secure systems when new vulnerabilities are found. They're also calling on the companies to continue to support older versions of their software after newer versions are on the market. They admit that companies do need to be vigilant about protecting their IT - but they want more help from the software developers. It seems like this is an obvious opportunity for managed security vendors to step up and offer solutions in the middle. The security problems are not going to go away - if anything, they're going to get worse. What needs to be done, however, is to look for a better solution to forcing an in-house IT staff to be ever-vigilant about patching every single application every time a new vulnerability is found.

Pentagon tried to hide details about top
brass responsibility for U.S. torture of
Iraqis
08/27/2004 01:22 PM
According to a New York Times report, buried in the part of the Fay-Jones report on abuses at Abu Ghraib that was classified by the Pentagon is the detail that: Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, the former top commander in Iraq, approved the use in Iraq of some severe interrogation practices intended to be limited to captives held in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and Afghanistan. Moreover, the report contends, by issuing and revising the rules for interrogations in Iraq three times in 30 days, General Sanchez and his legal staff sowed such confusion that interrogators acted in ways that violated the Geneva Conventions, which they understood poorly anyway. ... [Sanchez'] memorandum, while not authorizing abuse, effectively opened the way at Abu Ghraib last fall for interrogation techniques that Pentagon investigators have characterized as abusive, in dozens of cases involving dozens of soldiers at the prison in Iraq. The techniques approved by General Sanchez exceeded those advocated in a standard Army field manual that provided the basic guidelines for interrogation procedures. But they were among those previously approved by the Pentagon for use in Afghanistan and Cuba, and were recommended to General Sanchez and his staff in the summer of 2003 in memorandums sent by a team headed by Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller, a commander at Guantánamo who had been sent to Iraq by senior Pentagon officials, and by a military intelligence unit that had served in Afghanistan and was taking charge of interrogations at Abu Ghraib.... This is the same General Miller who Rumsfeld sent over to take charge of Iraqi prisons after the abuses at Abu Ghraib were revealed, who is currently in charge of Iraqi prisons. What was Rumsfeld trying to cover up? The passages involving General Sanchez's orders were among several deleted from the version of the report by Maj. Gen. George R. Fay that was made public by the Pentagon on Wednesday.... The classified sections of the Fay report reinforce criticisms made in another report, by the independent panel headed by James R. Schlesinger, the former defense secretary. That panel argued that General Sanchez's actions effectively amounted to an unauthorized suspension of the Geneva Conventions in Iraq by categorizing prisoners there as unlawful combatants. Clearly, there are still depths to be plumbed: The classified section of the Fay report also sheds new light on the role played by a secretive Special Operations Forces/Central Intelligence Agency task force...

Leadership and authority

Leadership and authority 09/07/2004 08:42 AM

I was just on a panel with Jimmy "Jimbo" Wales, the founder of Wikipedia. We've been talking the last few days about communities and it turns out the #wikipedia IRC channel is about the same size as #joiito. (approx 100 people online. Wikipedia has many other sub channels though so in aggregate they are much bigger...) Anyway, Jimmy noticed that I didn't have a Wikipedia entry and he decided to go to his community and see if he could get an article written while we were on the channel.

#wikipedia
-- Jimbo has joined #wikipedia
Jimbo: Just a fun experiment...
Jimbo: Joichi Ito is here at this conference, on the same panel with me.
Jimbo: But we apparently have no article about him.
Jimbo: A challenge: in the next hour, how good of an article can we create?
Member1: '''Joichi Ito''' is a [[person]]. {{bio-stub}}
Jimbo: Yes, he uses wikipedia too. But he's famous and important and we need a bio.
Jimbo: I have to go, because our panel is about to start again...
Jimob: But please, remind people as they wander in here, and let's see what happens.
Member2: who the fuck is Joichi Ito
Member3; Member2: write an article and find out
Member2: Jimbo can write the article if it's so important
Member3: someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today
Member1: The easy way out would be to grab an article from another page, cross out the name and write 'Joichi Ito' over it in crayon
It's the same on my channel, but leadership/foundership has nothing to do with authority. In fact, trying to exercise authority often has exactly the opposite effect. The article did end up getting written though. ;-)

It was a simple twist of fate: my HP Scanjet 5200C scanner gave up the ghost at the same time my HP Deskjet 842C ink cartridges went dry. I set off to do some comparison shopping for new cartridges at Office Depot and Best Buy. I decided to check the prices on new scanners as well. Instead of coming home with the best deal on the cartridges, and pricing info on scanners, I came back with an Epson Stylus CX5400. It's a multi-function device that replaces both the HP scanner and the printer, and gives me a standalone personal copier as well. Here's my rationale for getting the Epson CX5400, and the story on how I got it to play nicely on my SUSE 9.1 desktop.

PictureMate_3.jpg imageRemember the lunchbox-looking Epson PictureMate inkjet printer? Well, Bios Magazine took it for a test spray and found it to be more than just cute -- it's got a great picture quality, as well. Epson is pushing the PictureMate as a competitor to other companies' dye-sublimation printers, and its 6-color inkjet process not only stands up in image quality, but it ends up being a lot cheaper, as well. It also supports all your standard memory card formats, like SD/MMC, Memory Stick, CF, Smart Media, and xD, as well as direct printing from PictBridge/USB On-The-Go devices. It's even got Bluetooth if you want to throw down an extra $100 or so for the adapter.

With the $1,795 Stylus Pro 4000, Epson focused considerable energy on improving the print engine, including minor improvements to print quality. This was a wise decision; the 2200 and the 7600 produced stunning prints, and Epson sticks with the same UltraChrome pigment-ink formula in the 4000. As a result, the overall quality of both color and monochrome prints is excellent.
